Teenage car thief killed in pursuit - Is it worth it?

Local story I heard, but don't have a link.

A 15 year old took his father's car without permission. His father reported it to the police as a stolen car - and reported his son as the thief.

APB goes out, and later that day, the police in a nearby city spot the car and try to stop him. He takes off and, in the pursuit, ends up rolling the car and is killed.

The question I have, on many levels, is, was it worth it? Does the father think it was worth it to chase the kid to the point of fatal traffic accident? Is that what he was thinking when he called the police? Pursue him at all costs?

Similarly, for the police. Is it worth getting into a chase with a 15 year old kid who took his father's car? I didn't hear a report about whether he was armed or not, but the father would presumably know that, so could provide the information.

But hey, a 15 year old taking his dad's car without permission is a menace, and so the obvious correct solution is to go after him on a wild car chase.

I don't know. Is it really worth it?
