I'm guessing..."Biden Delivers 90 Minute Set Rife With Raunchy Sex and Toilet Humor".

Summary military execution or 'samosud' justice: evil philosophy or rules of war?

The Bolshevik Uprising of 1917 drew on the philosophy of Karl Marx, a nineteenth century writer (1818 - 1883) and who lived in London, and as adopted by the leaders of the Bolshevik Revolution, Lenin, Trotsky and Stalin. The Russian working classes rose up in revolt against what they saw as oppressive masters (the profligately ostentiously wealthy monarchs) who were executed, and a workers collective (soviet) put in its place, led by the aforesaid.

It is claimed that the political philosophical works of Lenin and Trotsky, drawing on Marx, advocated 'terrorism' and the 'samosud' system of peasant rough justice. However, was this actually advocated in their writings? We know Stalin famously said, 'The end justifies the means', and sitcom shows (for example, Citizen Smith) have characters professing, 'Come the revolution, we'll line'em all up against the wall', referring to the 'capitalist bastards', but whilst we know Stalin had horrific purges and bloodbaths, is there any evidence this was part of the Communist Manifesto?

Sure, something similar also happened in France, with the monarchy despatched to the guillotine.

IMV in times of insurrection or mutiny, such as in a civil war (which Russia 1917 was) it is not uncommon for army officers to be given the authority to summarily execute perceived traitors or agitators seen as 'enemies of the state'. Normally, such persons would be taken prisoner but the discretion would be there for an officer to summarily execute them without facing charges or court martial themselves.

This did happen in the 1918 Finnish Civil War, when 'White' army officers had permission to summarily execute 'Red Army' rebels - who themselves were violent and retributive towards their 'class enemies' (as Marx would put it) - and this led to a lot of resentment after the Civil War (which left apx 5% of the entire population dead in three bloodsoaked months), as the officers concerned retained anonymity and were never named or made to face a hearing.

According to wikipedia, on the subject of Military Summary Execution, this is legal in the following cases:

Quote:

Under military law, summary execution is illegal in almost all circumstances, as a military tribunal would be the competent judge needed to determine guilt and declare a sentence of death. However, there are certain exceptions to this rule in emergencies and warfare where summary execution is legal.

<snip>

— Second Protocol of the Geneva Conventions (1977), Article 6.2

Exceptions to prisoners of war status

However, some classes of combatants may not be accorded POW status, but that definition has broadened to cover more classes of combatants over time. In the past, summary execution of pirates, spies, and francs-tireurs[2] have been performed and considered legal under existing international law.[3] Francs-tireurs (a term originating in the Franco-Prussian War) are enemy civilians or militia who continue to fight in territory occupied by a warring party and do not wear military uniforms, and may otherwise be known as guerrillas, partisans, insurgents, etc. Though they could be legally jailed or executed by most armies a century ago, the experience of World War II influenced nations occupied by foreign forces to change the law to protect this group. Many of the post-war victors, such as France, Poland, and the USSR, had the experience of resistance fighters being summarily executed by the Axis if they were captured. The war also influenced them to make sure that commandos and other special forces who were caught deep behind enemy lines would be protected as POWs, rather than summarily executed as Hitler decreed through his 1942 Commando Order.
wiki

So, the question is, were Lenin and Trotsky in 1917 indulging in the normal rules of engagement in a violent insurrection, in which the state is the enemy and the rebels with a do-or-die attitude having little choice but to fight or did Lenin and Trotsky actively advocate violent terrorism or the Russian concept of 'samosud', a Russian word for primitive peasant justice, in their philosophical writings? Or, put another way, was the guerilla violence inevitable, given the civil unrest and bearing in mind military expediency under those such conditions that might call for summary execution?

There is an extract from Crime, Cultural Conflict, and Justice in Rural Russia, 1856-1914
By Stephen P. Frank attached, explaining what samosud is.

Anton Petrov Youtube Channel

I assume many of of us look at science blogs, and (real) science youtube channels.
I would like to highlight the YT channel of Anton Petrov. He's a science communicator. He's quite prolific. He has nearly a million subs.
He recently lost his infant child to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. As well as presenting some very interesting science, he has created a foundation in honour of his son. You can donate (or not) on his channel. All proceeds go to Save the Children to help kids in Ukraine.

I'm sure he would appreciate anything you could give, or even a few more subscriptions.

Thanks for reading.

Money, the tool of the devil

Money is a tool of the devil because all human beings want to be paid the highest price for their work and to pay the lowest possible price for the work of others. To be fair is to do to others what you want them to do to you is to love your neighbor as yourself, so if you are just you should pay the maximum for the work of others and be paid the minimum for your work, it is in this sense that I say that money is the tool of the devil because it puts you in a situation of injustice, it is tempting. To abolish money is to take away a tool from the devil, it is to take away the weapon from the killer.

Wikipedia block appeal?

I finally decided I might have enough knowledge on a topic that I wanted to contribute something on Wikipedia. I tried to create an account but was told I was blocked because of a range ban for another 5 months. To my knowledge, I've never had an account, never edited, never posted, - in short, I didn' do nuffin. From their faq:

Some kinds of blocks restrict editing from specific service providers or telecom companies in response to recent abuse or vandalism, and affect other users who are unrelated to that abuse.

So some jerk in my neighborhood has been vandalizing and I'm blocked? I've appealed, but am not hopeful. I'll see if a VPN gets around it, but again - not hopeful. Any constructive comments?

Cool new technique for de-ionizing water

Portable Seawater Desalination System for Generating Drinkable Water in Remote Locations

We demonstrate a field-deployable desalination system with multistage electromembrane processes, composed of two-stage ion concentration polarization and one-stage electrodialysis, to convert brackish water and seawater to drinkable water.
...
The portable system desalinates brackish water and seawater (2.5–45 g/L) into drinkable water (defined by WHO guideline), with the energy consumptions of 0.4–4 (brackish water) and 15.6–26.6 W h/L (seawater), respectively.
Nifty idea.

Outlook/Homail doing weird things?

Following a phone call I need to send an email to help@blahblah.com, let's say.

I start a new mail and enter help@blahblah.com as the recipient, add a subject and move on to the text, and add an attachment.

I look it over and help@ has changed to hello@.

Assuming it's my typo I delete that and retype it. It alters what I type to hello again. There is no way to edit this afaics, and replacing it keeps getting the same result.

I check my contacts list to be sure, but this is my first email to blahblah.com, so there's no existing contact that's overriding what I type. The only way round this is to create a new contact, help@blahblah.com, and select that from the contacts list within the "To" box.

Similar odd things have happened lately, but I assumed I was screwing up. What's going on?

Romance Scams

I have great difficulty finding sympathy for stupid people who pay out hundreds of thousands of dollars to someone they only know from the internet.

A woman came forward the other day and admitted to having been scammed out of 1/2 mio by a romance scammer, and since the story broke, another woman has admitted to losing an almost identical amount to the same bloke.

Personally, I admire his style. A million bucks between two sad old women is pretty good going, and if there are two, there will be a lot more somewhere.

Wish me luck :)

For the past two years I've had random crashes with my computer, probably related to my GFX card, but possibly the motherboard or memory.
I've not been able to pin it down nor fix, but the issue was minor enough (about 1 crash/day) that I stuck it out.

Finally had enough of it, but my drives are still ok.
So I bought a new motherboard, processor, memory, GFX card and powersupply.
Today the last bits arrived, so now I've got to put it together and switch my harddrives.

If all goes well windows should just detect the change and after some updates everything should still work fine.....

I'll update if things actually work.

Why Being Anti-Science Is Now Part Of Many Rural Americans’ Identity

ETA: Mods. I walked the line for a bit on putting this is politics or social and felt it fell a little more on this side, if you disagree or any discussion veers off more to the other side, feel free to move.

Quote:

People in rural areas hold old, well-known anxieties about scientists, particularly when the scientists come from the government. Kristin Lunz Trujillo, a postdoctoral researcher with the COVID States Project, said this anxiety stemmed from an attitude that pits rural, hands-on knowledge against the kind of knowledge obtained from institutions like universities or government bureaucracies — a kind of anti-establishment view that extends to scientists.

Bouncer Ejects Drunk From Philly Gay Bar...Then Kills Him

So Eric Pope was tying one on at Tabu, a Phillidelphia Pennsylvania gay bar. Got a little too much for the bouncer, who kicked him out. Pope then dances by himself out on the public street, not even on Tabu property, apparently just enjoying a good old drunken time, when the bouncer decides what the happy-go-lucky dancer needs is an overhand cross that would make Mike Tyson cringe. Pope is left on the asphalt for a couple minutes before the bouncer pulls him off the aforementioned public street. Erik Pope later dies of his head injuries. While police are investigating, the bouncer has not been charged.

The Monkey Gland Man

I was introduced to this bit of historical weirdness n the Dorothy Sayers novel The Unpleasantness at the Bellona Club
In the book one of the characters is a physician is engaged in research into "ductless glands", the endocrine system and as one of Womsey's contacts says:
Quote:

"...would you care to come along to a ‘do’ at the Rushworths’ Wednesday Week? It will be very deadly, because Naomi Rushworth’s new young man is going to read a paper on ductless glands which nobody knows anything about. However, it appears that ductless glands will be ‘news’ in next to no time—ever so much more up-to-date than vitamins—so the Rushworths are all over glands—in the social sense, I mean.”
Other works by Sayers refer to various "monkey gland" treatments, for improved virility as well as to cure "criminal tendencies" in preference to hanging.

Which brings me back to the title of this piece: Serge Abrahamovitch Voronoff, the Monkey Gland Man. Voronoff was (as his name suggests) a Russian who worked principally in France and became a citizen in 1895

Which is early enough for him to become involved with Sherlock Holmes. Holmes did encounter a case of monkey gland treatment (The Adventure of the Creeping Man; written 1923, set in 1903) and it's bizarre and unpleasant consequences. I've considered the possibilities for out AITAS game, in the Whoniverse such a case might have involved something more outré being ingested (or implanted) and even weirder effects for the Paternoster Gang to investigate.

In France there was considerable interest, during the late nineteenth century/early twentieth century, in what is now called xenotransplantation, the implantation of organs or tissues from one form of animal into another. Probably the most significant practitioner was Charles-Édouard Brown-Séquard (wiki) who experimented with injecting himself with extracts from pulverised dog and guinea pig testicles. Unsurprisingly this experimentation failed to produce any rejuvenation effect.

Voronoff continued from this basis and became obsessed with glandular transplants; his early experiments involved transplanting thyroid glands from chimpanzees to humans with thyroid deficiencies (he wasn't the only physician dabbling with such treatments, Moritz Schiff and Anton von Eiselsberg also performed such transplants, though they generally used human glands harvested from corpses).
Voronoff moved on to transplanting the testicles of executed criminals into millionaires, in the hope of producing increased virility or retarding the aging processes. This profitable line of work was limited by the lack of suitable transplant material and, as demand exceeded supply, he turned to using monkey testicle tissue instead.

Over roughly ten years, between 1917 and 1926, Voronoff carried out hundreds of experimental transplants, mainly in sheep, goats and bulls. His research indicated (to him anyway) that transplantations from younger animals to older caused the older animals to regain the vigour of younger animals. He also considered monkey-gland transplantation an effective treatment to counter senility.

Officially his first transplant involving implanting monkey testicle tissue into a human happened on 12JUN1920. Soon it became a cause célèbre and Voronoff was internationally applauded. Within ten years over five hundred men has been recipients of Voronoff's technique in France alone, with hundreds more operated on in Britain, Germany, the United States and elsewhere. There were also experiments on women, using ovarian transplants to 'cure' menopause and retard aging as well as attempts at creating human/chimpanzee hybrids, an idea distressingly popular in the period that I discussed here.

In an era obsessed with 'modernity' as well as youth, Voronoff claims became immensely popular and he became very wealthy from his work. His fall from favour was rapid however, especially after the isolation of testosterone in 1935 (which involved the 'processing' of hundreds of kilogrammes of bovine testicles from the stockyards of Chicago by college students). By his death in 1951 he was a figure of ridicule.

Of course in the Whoniverse Voronoff (and others) might have been transplanting slices of more exotic creatures into humans; Earth Reptiles perhaps or Weevils. Voronoff maintained his own 'monkey house' for breeding various primates to supply demand; what if he'd been housing Weevils?

There is one curious corollary to Voronoff's work, involving (oddly) Wolverhampton Wanderers football team and their infamous manager, 'the Major', Frank Buckley.
  • Buckley was (and is) a controversial figure in English football history; he introduced structured training regimes, improved nutrition and health care, but also dosed players with amphetamines (though he certainly wasn't the only manager to do this) and saw his club banned from European matches due to their "physical" game.

In 1937 Buckley was approached by a dodgy Scottish-chemist named Menzies Sharp (who'd been a student of Voronoff and effectively had a 'franchise' for Britain) regarding a "radical new treatment" that Sharp claimed could improve stamina, accelerate recovery times and improve performance. The 'treatment' involved either monkey gland implantation or the injection of extracts from monkey glands.
  • "Glands" here being the preferred euphemism for testicles.

Buckley was interested by Sharp’s proposal but decided to try out the treatment on himself before administering it to his players. Buckley was amazed by the effects:
Quote:

“The treatment lasted three or four months. Long before it was over I felt so much benefit that I asked the players if they would be willing to undergo it and that is how the gland treatment became general at Molineux.”
Most players were injected twice a week for six weeks (though some refused) and saw a significant improvement in performance, though this was almost certainly a mixture of better training and the placebo effect.

Though it's possible other substances were included in the injections;
Buckley had used amphetamines and one opposing player (after a 7:0 defeat) said a Wanderers player "walked past me with glazed eyes".

The matter stirred up a controversy that made it into the House of Commons after members of parliament asked questions about the legality and safety of the treatment (and suggested applying it to government ministers), The Football League declined to prohibit the process, though requiring it to be accepted voluntarily by players. The "gland treatment" spread and other clubs (at least Portsmouth, Tottenham and Chelsea and probably others) implemented it. In fact the 1939 FA Cup final, between Wanders and Portsmouth, was dubbed the "Monkey Gland Final" by the media. Then the war came and put an end to a bizarre few years in English football, when animal gland extracts became the supplement of choice for the players.......

I'd like this to be a fairly trivial thread.

Atlantis, I assumed there was some basis for it. A lost city or some such somewhere. Not really, almost certainly just a metaphor in a one of Plato's dialogues. Even the ancients thought so.

The Exodus, I didn't believe in the miracles or anything, just that the Jews were in Egypt at some point and later driven out. Basically no evidence for any of it. They probably just grew out of the local philistine population. At most, they were Levantine clients of the pharoahs at some point.

Are food plants burning down all over the U.S.?

As always, I bring this stuff to the Best Brains I know of to see what's what. A friend just called to ask me what I thought about all the food processing plants across the U.S. burning down. I said I didn't think anything of it as I hadn't heard any reports of it, whatsoever. So I did a quick google search,

Assange should be released

The previous thread was about whether or not Assange was a rapist.

Apparently the charges have since been dropped (or the Swedish government is no longer interested in having him extradited and imprisoned there).

Yet he is now in a prison in the UK apparently awaiting charges of "computer intrusion" (literally who cares?) and espionage charges that apparently have a possible sentence of up to 170 years.

In my humble opinion, no British government should extradite anyone to a country that allows perverse punishments such as those in Guantanamo Bay or ludicrously long prison sentences of over 100 years. To me, such punishments sound medieval.

Besides that, the espionage act is a pretty dodgy piece of legislation given its origins, and should not be supported by any civilized legislature. But why should the UK care about a US espionage case especially when the US won't extradite a woman who ran over and killed a UK citizen?

By now, Assange's life has been so destroyed by a combination of his own choices and the relentless pursuit of a rather incoherent legal system that no sane human could consider him to have "gotten away with it" although I don't doubt that some idiots on this very forum will claim it.

It now seems pointless and vindictive to pursue this guy, as weird as he might be. Biden should pardon him, and if not, the UK should release him if they want to prove that all the bluster about leaving the EU means taking back control.

Caesar's Rhine bridges

Casting a skeptical eye to history, what evidence exists that Caesar actually built bridges across the Rhine? The claims are quite extraordinary: That Caesar's army built a bridge across the Rhine in just 10 days using nothing more than local timber (which had to be cut down first).

Oh, BTW, he had the bridges dismantled afterwards so the "bad guys" couldn't use it, so you just have to take Caesar's word for it that he really built them.

I seems to be taken at face value by most historians that this actually happened. Given the fact Caesar wasn't exactly immune to exaggerating his accomplishments for political advantage, how can we be sure this ever really happened? Especially in 10 days! It just seems absurd.

I am more than happy to be proven wrong, because I am genuinely interested in finding out how we know this is true, but I can never really come up with anything beyond "someone said so".

Alliance Defending Freedom Lawsuit

Quote:

Judge Dismisses Lawsuit Accusing Virginia School District Of Imposing
Discriminatory Anti-Racism Policy by Ryan Mills

According to the lawsuit: the Charlottesville-area school board adopted
an anti-racism policy in 2019, and launched an anti-racism pilot program
last spring at an area middle school. Students were instructed to “view
everyone and everything through a distorted racial lens.” The program
classified students by race, and labeled people as “perpetually privileged
oppressors” or as the “perpetually victimized” oppressed. White, Christian
students were taught that they were members of the “dominant culture”
that oppresses “subordinate” students of color and non-Christians.

English teachers were instructed to focus on students’ whiteness and
white privilege, and the schools started using social studies books that
instructed students to view history through a critical theory lens, according
to court documents. The instruction “is designed to indoctrinate students
in ‘anti-racism’ ideology, which actually promotes racism,” the lawsuit states.

The plaintiffs argued that the board’s anti-racism policy violates the Virginia
Constitution, and students’ rights to be free from government discrimination
based on race, color, sex, or religion, and their rights to free speech. They also
argued the policy violates parents’ rights to make decisions about their children’s
upbringing and education.

Well... I don't know how you could teach this stuff without reference to race,
religion, or region on the map. I wonder if the story has a bit more material.

Affinity Grouping (aka Neo-Segretationism)

A little article from TheFire.org discussing how the practice of 'Affinity Grouping' beloved by the Social Justice crowd may fall afoul of anti-discrimination legislation passed during the Civil Rights era.

I can remember seeing the phrase on right-wing sites I monitor along with plenty of commentary to the effect that 'If they want to racially segregate themselves, we'll be happy to help.' Where the 'They was generally assumed to refer to what is now euphamistically referred to as B/I/POC.

For consideration, here is the article:

Quote:

With nearly 60 years having passed since the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Americans have the right to expect racial segregation — at least of the “official” variety — to be a thing of the past on our nation’s college campuses. Yet along with others, FIRE has noticed a recent pattern of events that explicitly segregate on the basis of race.

Nancy Pelosi

If rank and file Democrats wanted to truly make a difference, they would have ditched the hideous and senile Nancy Pelosi to touch years ago.

And if you need proof of her senility, stupidity and what a waste of space she is, today's comment from her borders on the insane.

Multiple people claim to have meet fictional comic book hero in real life

This is kind of a weird one and, truth be told, reads more like an industry running gag / inside joke than anything else, but it's weird enough even accounting for that.

Numerous comic book writers, including the character creator Alan Moore himself, have claimed to have met John Constantine, a fictional character in DCs comics (played by Keanu Reeves in the 2005 film and Matt Ryan in the "Arrowverse" TV Shows) in real life. Sometimes multiple times.

A lot of hearsay and second hand so... grain of salt but:

Voluntary Dying

Copied from the Suicide thread:

Like I said in the Euthanasia thread, I'm firmly of the opinion that if an adult of sound mind decides, on cool rational thought, that they wish to exit life, then not only should they not be prevented from doing this by law, but every effort should be made to make the process easy (as in painless) for them.

With adequate safeguards, of course: in terms of making sure others don't encourage someone to off themselves to further their own agenda, financial or otherwise; in terms of ruling out mental illness; in terms of making sure this isn't an impulsive decision and that the subject might change their mind in a while; or maybe a decision under the influence of drugs or alcohol, etc. That is, such a person would need to be properly vetted by both law enforcement as well as mental health professionals.

Let me emphasize that this isn't the kind of taking of one's life that's largely been discussed here: things like mental illness, drugs, someone finding themselves in some desperate situation where it is the situation itself that is prompting the suicide, etc. I kind of think there might be another category of people who might want to go painlessly to death on their own terms: and while this may include people with terminal disease, or some very painful condition, but I don't mean limited to such reasons, that is, this would include cases where no reason is produced at all, other than the subject wants this. (Discussion around euthanasia in cases of terminal illness is probably best carried on in the thread already existing.)

Like I said, this is not to take away from the very valid concerns raised in this thread. And it occurs to me, as I type this, that should this angle, that I'm trying to bring in, attract comments and a larger conversation here, then that will end up derailing this thread; so what I'll do is start a new thread right after I post this message here, with this post copied there. If people are interested, then I'd like to initiate a discussion on voluntary dying --- the legal aspects, moral/ethical aspects, the economic angle, all of that. Not that I myself have much to contribute to such a discussion, as far as I can see, beyond simply initiating the discussion.

(In this proposed discussion, let's not get into the means of it, the available techniques if you will, for obvious reasons. I don't mean this discussion as encouragement to people to actually take their lives, or anything like that. Just a discussion around whether an environment that is sympathetic to and supportive of considered, voluntary dying makes sense, and what such an environment might look like.)

eta: I'm not even sure if what I'm suggesting is even a thing. That is, I'm thinking of "this" type of voluntary dying as a separate kind of category to the sort this thread is about, this current thread; but is that thinking, that opinion, even valid? That itself might be a thing to discuss, that people with some experience and knowledge of this sort of thing might weigh in on. I kind of think it is, but it could be I'm mistaken in thinking that.

In any case, I take strong exception to the negativity expressed by some posters in this thread around suicides, by terming it "selfish", and such other terms. I don't see why people shouldn't have the option of a dignified exit from life on their own terms, provided ... well, provided lots of things, to prevent misuse/misapplication of such a provision.

In 2004, the scientific world was shaken by the discovery of fossils from a tiny species of hominin on the Indonesian island of Flores. Labeled Homo floresiensis and dating to the late Pleistocene, the species was apparently a contemporary of early modern humans in this part of Southeast Asia. Yet in certain respects the diminutive hominin resembled australopithecines and even chimpanzees. Twenty years previously, when I began ethnographic fieldwork on Flores, I heard tales of humanlike creatures, some still reputedly alive although very rarely seen.
The evidence seems to be as strong as that for Bigfoots (or as weak). A body would be nice. Even some DNA?

Did Sun Tzu say "Build your opponent a golden bridge to retreat across"?

With the war in Ukraine going badly for Russia, there's a quote that's been appearing lately: "Build your opponent a golden bridge to retreat across." It's attributed to Sun Tzu, whose only extant work is The Art of War dating from the Late Spring and Autumn period in China, roughly the 5th century BC by the western calendar.

Wanting to see the quote in context, I downloaded a translation of the work from Project Gutenberg. It was prepared in 1910 by Lionel Giles, a noted sinologist who was familiar with Chinese culture and language. His translation includes copious notes: Sun Tzu's writing amounts to a little over 11,000 words, while the entire work has over 55,000.

The quote does not appear at all in the book.

The word retreat occurs only 7 times in the translation of The Art of War proper:

Quote:

Originally Posted by The Art of War

There are three ways in which a ruler can bring misfortune upon his army:—
  1. By commanding the army to advance or to retreat, being ignorant of the fact that it cannot obey. This is called hobbling the army.
  2. By attempting to govern an army in the same way as he administers a kingdom, being ignorant of the conditions which obtain in an army. This causes restlessness in the soldier’s minds.
  3. By employing the officers of his army without discrimination, through ignorance of the military principle of adaptation to circumstances. This shakes the confidence of the soldiers.

Chapter VII. Manoeuvering

On the field of battle, the spoken word does not carry far enough: hence the institution of gongs and drums. Nor can ordinary objects be seen clearly enough: hence the institution of banners and flags. Gongs and drums, banners and flags, are means whereby the ears and eyes of the host may be focussed on one particular point. The host thus forming a single united body, is it impossible either for the brave to advance alone, or for the cowardly to retreat alone. This is the art of handling large masses of men.

Chapter IX. The Army on the March

Humble words and increased preparations are signs that the enemy is about to advance. Violent language and driving forward as if to the attack are signs that he will retreat.

...

When some are seen advancing and some retreating, it is a lure.

Chapter X. Terrain

When the position is such that neither side will gain by making the first move, it is called temporising ground. In a position of this sort, even though the enemy should offer us an attractive bait, it will be advisable not to stir forth, but rather to retreat, thus enticing the enemy in his turn; then, when part of his army has come out, we may deliver our attack with advantage.

...

If the enemy has occupied them before you, do not follow him, but retreat and try to entice him away.

...

The general who advances without coveting fame and retreats without fearing disgrace, whose only thought is to protect his country and do good service for his sovereign, is the jewel of the kingdom.

Chapter XI. The Nine Situations

When you have the enemy’s strongholds on your rear, and narrow passes in front, it is hemmed-in ground. ... On hemmed-in ground, I would block any way of retreat.

As for the word bridge, it does not appear in Sun Tzu's text at all. Neither does golden, nor gold for that matter.

Can anyone shed more light on this? Does someone have access to a more recent translation of this work? If so, does the quote appear there?

I'm unwilling to trust any translation prior to Giles', because in his introduction he's highly critical of earlier work.

Suicide

This is a subject I'd never really thought about until 10 years ago when a friend of my son's committed suicide at age 20.

Since then, one of my dearest friends killed herself at age 40, another person very close to our family made a serious attempt and was only saved by ambulance personnel, and then just a couple of weeks ago, a young man (20) that my wife works with killed himself.

Around 800,000 people die a year from suicide. That means that during the time it took you to read this post, someone probably died from self-inflicted injury.

I have no clue what drives people to suicide, but I do know that very little is ever accomplished by programs designed to reduce the toll. We've vacillated between never mentioning it to having open discussion, with no clear guide as to what to do.

A New Zealand program aimed at high school kids claims to be helping, yet it seems that suicide rates actually increase slightly in areas where the programs have been run.

It's also a certainty that the number is an under-count, with many men killing themselves in head-on crashes that are difficult to list as official suicide.

To me, one glaring problem is the celebration of death that seems to always take place when a young person pulls the plug. Funerals are lush affairs, the body looks beautiful and people sing the praises of the deceased. This seems to glorify and encourage other, and it's factual that suicides often come in clusters, and I'd personally like to see funerals solely focus on what a stupid and selfish move it is.

Untreated mental illness is possibly the biggest factor in it all, and my thoughts on the psychiatric/psychological industry are well known.

Is there an example of something that works long term in terms of prevention? And why do very similar countries have such stark differences? UK and NZ/Aust springs to mind immediately, with UK having far lower rates, despite possibly deeper poverty. I'm sure there are people here who have worked for help lines and all input is appreciated.

I see that the right-wing Trumpers are lining up outside Disney, not to go on the rides, but to wave **** Biden and Let’s Go Brandon flags and scream and bellyache about something.

But what??!?

They seem to be calling Disney “Groomers” but where does this come from? Apparently it is something to do with them not being homophobic or some criticism of Ron DeSantis and not paying to his campaign….

Is that really it? Is Disney somehow obliged to pay for a GOP governor’s campaign and if they don’t do so they somehow get angry mobs set on them and have some kinds of legal statuses revoked?

There have been a number of reports about houses constructed in a matter of hours with giant 3D printing machines that lay down layers of concrete. CBS News had a report this week about plans for a 3D printed community.

Question: I can certainly understand that this is a faster, more efficient technique than on-site stick-built construction. But is this really better than factory-built modular houses or ICF poured concrete or even prefab concrete panels? Is this really the wave of the future, or just a PR stunt?

The Crisis in Cosmology

I checked to see whether there was already a thread about this, and there sort of was one a few years ago, but it didn't have a very snappy title and didn't get very many responses.

Anyway, what this is about is various observations that don't seem to agree with the Lamda CDM model of cosmology, which is the currently most widely accepted model of the universe.

This thread was mostly inspired by some YouTube videos I watched, but if you start a thread to discuss a YouTube video someone will inevitably come along and complain that they don't watch YouTube videos. So if you prefer the written word you can see this article on the topic (although I just noticed that even this article has an accompanying YouTube video):

Why is there a 'crisis' in cosmology?

Quote:

The LCDM model
What's at stake here is our modern understanding of the history of the universe, as encapsulated by the so-called Lambda-CDM model, often abbreviated as LCDM.
But if you aren't allergic to YouTube, here's the videos on the topic that I can recommend. And these people aren't cranks, they're real scientists:

How we plan to solve the "Crisis in Cosmology" (Rebecca Smethurst, aka Dr. Becky, a British astrophysicist)
[yt]OLL_8ArJIis[/yt]

New Evidence against the Standard Model of Cosmology (Sabine Hossenfelder, a German theoretical physicist)
[yt]JETGS64kTys[/yt]

Is the strength of gravity really CONSTANT? | Solving the crisis in cosmology (Dr. Becky again)
[yt]Ygq-DK1p17E[/yt]

I mean, if you have to question whether the strength of gravity might not be a universal constant, it seems like maybe they still haven't landed on a theory yet that explains all the observations in a tidy way.

Anyway, I don't know if there's any better model to be had, but the topic does interest me. I await a new line of evidence using gravitational waves emitted from merging neutron stars.

Store owner shoots 9 year old girl getting picture with Easter bunny

California store owner fires at shoplifters, police say, but mistakenly hits girl getting picture with mall Easter bunny

Quote:

A Southern California shoe store owner opened fire at two shoplifters, police said, but mistakenly shot a 9-year-old girl about to get her picture with a mall Easter bunny. The store owner fled the state and was arrested in Nevada, authorities said Wednesday.

Marqel Cockrell, 20, was chasing the shoplifters out of the store Tuesday evening at the Mall of Victor Valley in the small city of Victorville when he "fired multiple shots at the shoplifters," Victorville police said in a statement.

"Cockrell's shots missed the shoplifters and instead hit the 9-year-old female victim," the statement said.

The girl, identified by family members as Ava Chruniak, had been getting ready for pictures with the Easter bunny in the mall when the shots were fired, said her grandmother, Robin Moraga-Saldarelli. The girl was left with three gunshot wounds, including two in her arm, Moraga-Saldarelli said.

Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation Under Scrutiny

Quote:

Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation Under Scrutiny

As the Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation comes under scrutiny
over its purchase of a $5.8 million Los Angeles mansion, co-founder Patrisse
Cullors blasted standard financial disclosure forms as “triggering” and “unsafe.”
“It is such a trip to hear the term ‘990,’” Cullors said during an event Friday,
referring to IRS Form 990 which charities are required to file every year to
disclose their financial activities. “I’m like, ugh. It’s, like, triggering,” she
added, saying that she “actually did not know” what the form was before
“all this happened.” Cullors went on to claim filing the financial disclosure
forms “doesn’t seem safe for us.”

Ha! Ha! Ha!

If they didn't file Form 1023 to create a 503(C)(3) charitable organization then
they do not have an obligation to file Form 990.

On the other hand, if they did, then how could they forget the need to file
the form? And, if isn't safe, why did they fill out the form?

The Brooklyn Subway Shooting Conspiracy

Let me put a caveat right up front that I don't think there's a conspiracy. I don't even have an idea of what a conspiracy here could be about. I think that in over 20 years this is one of the few times I've even visited this section of the Forum. But I thought this thread might be necessary so the speculation doesn't clog up the "serious" thread. I did want to note the weirdnesses of the case, though. What I really think is that someone just modded our Matrix engrams to see how we'd react. :p

As they put out the BOLO (Be On the Lookout) they said he was wearing a green vest and a red hoodie. A much later report said he had on a yellow vest and a gray sweatshirt.
"The first reports are always wrong."
This is shaping up to be a weird case -- now, over 12 hours later, at least they know the "person of interest", but nobody has seen him, on camera or anywhere? Most of the Transit cameras were malfunctioning? I'm not promoting any kind of conspiracy theory, but another weirdity is the name attributed to the guy who shot the cell phone video (that they're showing over, and over, and over). His name -- Will B. Wylde.

The conveniently-dropped credit card? My first impression was that it was stolen and they're looking for the wrong guy. But the research of his social postings turned up some pretty crazy stuff.

And the guy's name -- Frank James? Like in the outlaw James Gang? Plus, the guy must be an idiot to be in an enclosed space, fire 33 shots, and get no fatalities. I'm also surprised I have not seen an interview with one of the riders saying, yeah, that's the guy. Weird upon weird.

If it's a conspiracy, it's a Mission: Impossible kind of setup. But I don't think I'd believe it in a movie.

Ok... Go! :D

Upcoming execution of Melissa Lucio

In the absence of a stay, she will be executed for killing her daughter. Her story is that her daughter fell down a flight of stairs but did not seem to be in great distress. Two days later she died. Assuming that Ms. Lucio is telling the truth, she sounds neglectful. On the other hand the way she was questioned is an excellent example how an interrogation should not be conducted. The Texas Tribune wrote, "The case against Lucio was built almost entirely around an ambiguous “confession” obtained after hours of police interrogation, and the judge at her trial barred expert testimony that might have explained why she would admit to police things she didn’t do." One is somewhat reminded of the Martin Tankleff case, which involved a false confession. The questions surrounding the injuries suffered by the infant are well outside my knowledge but are almost certainly worth discussing in the context of this case.

In the second half of the article in the Texas Tribune is the following: "Three of the 10 denying judges, though, were still concerned with the trial judge’s decision. But they believed their hands were tied by the Antiterrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act, a controversial 1996 federal law passed in a tough-on-crime era that limits both the allowable number of death penalty appeals as well as their paths to success." AEDPA is an absolute disaster of a law.

The ATF banned "build parties" in which people would by kits such 80% ar-15 lower receivers then go to a machine shop to finish them. The ATF rule required that any machine shop be licensed as a firearm manufacturer prior to allowing the use of their equipment to finish a firearm kit.

Biden's new rule will also update the definition of a firearm. Some guns such as the ar-15 have a split receiver. The receiver is currently defined to be the part that holds the "hammer, bolt or breechblock, and firing mechanism". On an ar-15, the lower receiver, which all US manufacturers only sell to FFL's, contains the firing mechanism and hammer, but not the bolt. So technically, the ar-15 lower receiver is not legally a firearm all by itself even though I've never seen them for sale as a non-firearm.

Federal currently does not require a home built firearm (other than NFA firearms) to have a serial number. But if it is transferred to another person or FFL, it is required to have a serial number engraved.

Biden's order will require serial numbers on all firearms if they are transferred. I'm not sure how this will be different from current regulations.

Thought I'd start a general Pakistan thread.

The Behavior of US School Teachers…

administrators, employees, students, etc.

That it is now becoming increasingly common for parents to pull their children out of public schools to prevent them from being abused, is evidence that the behavior of the faculty and the overall environment in our schools is not what should be expected in the USA.

Let this be a catchall thread to highlight some of the dangers found in US schools, thus providing evidence schools and employees populated by them are no different from prisons and the criminals held within them.

In a small town of less than 200 people in an area where I used to live, a high school teacher was arrested for providing alcohol to a minor, statutory sodomy, sexual contact with a student and sending her photos of his genitalia.

H.pylori?

After a lifetime of stomach problems - starting in childhood - I was just diagnosed with Hpylori. I was relieved to learn the cause of bleeding ulcers, gastritis, and so on, some strong antibiotics should cure it. I am hopeful.

Do any of you have some knowledge of this disease? Advice? Antidotes?

Thanks!

Dam Busters

2023 will see the Dam Busters' famed exploits in the form of celebrating their 80th Anniversary. This seems to consist of original Lancasters and sometimes a Spitfire or two thrown in as they fly over the dams of Northern England, in Derwent, Cumbria.

A poster mentioned in passing in an unrelated thread: "If you are using the likes of Paul Brickhill's The Dambusters as your historical references for WW2 no wonder you have such bizarre ideas."

Brickhill's version is indeed the copy I had in my bookcase published 1951 (I wonder if it was a first edition).

So, question: what is wrong with Brickhill's version of the Dam Busters, upon which the film is based? One of the best selling books of its day.

Or, does RAF Squadron 617 fully deserve its heroic and much revered status?

Lancaster Bomber - Dambusters 70 years on

What about other famous R.A.F. adventures in WWII, such as the Battle of Arnhem?

Quote:

Farthest north, the British 1st Airborne Division landed at Arnhem to capture bridges across the Nederrijn (Lower Rhine), supported by men of the Glider Pilot Regiment and the 1st Polish Parachute Brigade. The British XXX Corps were expected to reach the British airborne forces in two to three days.

Genocidal intentions in Russia!!!!

This is an opinion piece that was published in the Russian funded and controlled Ria Novosti. Its views, regarding Ukraine and Ukrainians, are terrifying. Genocide is literally its agenda, goal and aim.

Below is just part of the article:

"The Nazis who took up arms should be destroyed to the maximum on the battlefield. No significant distinction should be made between APUand the so-called national battalions, as well as the territorial defense that joined these two types of military formations. All of them are equally involved in extreme cruelty against the civilian population, equally guilty of the genocide of the Russian people, do not comply with the laws and customs of war. War criminals and active Nazis should be exemplarily and exponentially punished. There must be a total lustration. Any organizations that have associated themselves with the practice of Nazism have been liquidated and banned. However, in addition to the top, a significant part of the masses, which are passive Nazis, accomplices of Nazism, are also guilty. They supported and indulged Nazi power.

The just punishment of this part of the population is possible only as bearing the inevitable hardships of a just war against the Nazi system, carried out with the utmost care and discretion in relation to civilians. Further denazification of this mass of the population consists in re-education, which is achieved by ideological repression (suppression) of Nazi attitudes and strict censorship: not only in the political sphere, but also necessarily in the sphere of culture and education. It was through culture and education that a deep mass nazification of the population was prepared and carried out, secured by the promise of dividends from the victory of the Nazi regime overRussia , Nazi propaganda, internal violence and terror, as well as an eight-year war with the people of Donbass who rebelled against Ukrainian Nazism.

Denazification will inevitably also be a de-Ukrainization - a rejection of the large-scale artificial inflation of the ethnic component of self-identification of the population of the territories of historical Little Russia and New Russia, begun by the Soviet authorities. Being an instrument of the communist superpower, after its fall, artificial ethnocentrism did not remain ownerless. In this official capacity, he passed under the authority of another superpower (the power standing over the states) — the superpower of the West. It must be returned to its natural boundaries and deprived of political functionality.

Unlike, say, Georgia and the Baltic countries , Ukraine, as history has shown, is impossible as a nation state, and attempts to "build" one naturally lead to Nazism. Ukrainism is an artificial anti-Russian construction that does not have its own civilizational content, a subordinate element of an alien and alien civilization. Debanderization by itself will not be enough for denazification - the Bandera element is only a performer and a screen, a disguise for the European project of Nazi Ukraine, therefore the denazification of Ukraine is also its inevitable de-Europeanization.

The Bandera elite must be eliminated, its re-education is impossible. "
