Interesting events in the history of the universe

I'm trying to do one of those 'cosmic pathways' where a foot is a couple of million years etc at my community centre, and I'd like to find something about interesting, bizarre events in the history of the universe so I can put them on this pathway.

Less science heavy and more things like when the universe was completely black and when it rained for 2 million years on earth.
