Lindsey Lohan socked in the face for trying to kidnap Syrian refugee children

During a live stream that apparently took place last night, Lindsey Lohan tells viewers that she wants to introduce them to a "Syrian refugee family" that she found, who apparently lives on the street. Walking up to the family and ignoring the adults, she starts asking the children to come back to Lindsey's hotel room with her to "watch movies", intermittently speaking fake Arabic-sounding words at the adults. When the family finally grows tired of her and starts to leave the area, Lohan follows, declaring - in English, but in some kind of laughable phony "Arabic-speaker" accent - that she will not leave them alone until she takes the children, and accusing the parents of being human traffickers; again interspersed with phony "Araby words". At one point she tries to grab a child, and the mother turns around and punches her.

You can find news articles about this incident (some of them erroneously reporting it happened in Russia; apparently it was Paris), but I will just link to a mirror of the video. It is short, less than three minutes.

[yt]8qBnKzk_npY[/yt]

This could certainly be characterized as a kidnap attempt; insofar as, if a mother in the US complained to the police that someone was engaging in this behavior, I believe the police would treat it as an attempted kidnapping. I don't know if Lohan was on some kind of drug, or simply delusional. Or maybe she was Right All Along! Whatever the case, it's a bizarre incident.

Question/help on the sport of cricket

In a book I am writing (I'm American) the British character's unit is involved with a 'background' series of cricket games with other military units.

What I require are three reasonable scores: Knowing absolutely nothing about Cricket I cannot 'guess' what a 'proper' cricket score would look like.

What I need are:

One a reasonable score - a win in American football a score like this would be say 24 to 17, normal. I need an equivalent reasonable Cricket score.

Second score, unusual very low scoring, example again in American Football 0 to 3 what would be the equivalent in Cricket? A loss.

Third score, a very high scoring game, example in American football, 72 to 54, an equivalent in Cricket leading to a win.

Thanks

The Behavior of UK Police officers.

That someone is posting about occupied territory on what used to be sovereign UK soil is evidence that the police of the UK have handed over their authority of a foreign people. The cowardice demonstrated by UK police officers is beyond reckoning. Their cowardice borders complicity in some horrific crimes due to their knowledge of the crimes but refusal to take action.

I hate calling these people police officers because obviously they are not. They are cowards at best. Traitors working for foreign people is likely more accurate.

To me, a police officer is someone who has taken an oath to protect people in their community. If they'd rather run with their between their legs than engage in a confrontation, then a vacuum will emerge. Nature abhors a vacuum. That vacuum will quickly be filled. In many cases in the UK, that vacuum has been filled.

Even UK Police Officers admit as much:

"A Lancashire Police officer, who wished to remain anonymous, told MailOnline: 'There are Muslim areas of Preston that, if we wish to patrol, we have to contact local Muslim community leaders to get their permission'. "

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...oon-RIGHT.html

As for the "at least they don't shoot people!" crowd well, their cowardice is causing deaths, and countless other horrific crimes.

"Murders and rapes going unreported in no-go zones for police as minority communities launch own justice systems"

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...e-systems.html

"The chief inspector of constabulary, Tom Winsor, said some ethnic minority communities are turning their backs on police and rarely, if ever, call them to deal with crimes as serious as murder and sexual assaults against children, instead dealing with them in their own way."

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/...e-chief-winsor

'Islamic extremists have created "no-go" areas across Britain where it is too dangerous for non-Muslims to enter, one of the Church of England's most senior bishops warns today.'

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/ukn...n-Muslims.html

Video footage of UK police running away from Muslims like a bunch of cowards.

It has been made abundantly clear by many that the UK is up for grabs. The police have no duty to protect its citizenry. They are not expected to take risks. They make good people feel hopeless. They terrorize their native population with frivolous "hate speech" laws that only apply to them while letting rapists run free. They embolden bad people by knowing the police have no real authority.

I'd rather have my police not create power vacuums by being complete cowards.

Soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo credibly accused of rape

The story that Ronaldo had allegedly raped a woman in Las Vegas was originally reported on last year but received little traction, with some sources noting the purported victim's refusal to talk to the press about the matter and Ronaldo's agency's dismissal of the entire claim as fictional.

However, things have now changed. The alleged victim's new attorney has revealed the existence of a non-disclosure agreement and settlement between the victim, Kathryn Mayorga, and Ronaldo which had kept the victim from speaking earlier about the matter, but which the attorney asserts is non-enforceable. Several settlement-related documents signed by both Ronaldo and Mayorga have been given to the press, including (according to Der Spiegel) an interview of Ronaldo conducted by his own attorney in which Ronaldo confirms the pertinent details of the incident, plainly stating that the victim said she didn't want to have sex and repeatedly told him "no" and to stop during the act, but he did it anyway because she "continued to make herself available" and "didn't scream".

The Der Spiegel story can be read here.

Should sectors of the economy with a large environmental footprint be nationalized?

I know this isn't strictly new: in many countries, the energy sector and other industries with a heavy impact on the environment are nationalized.

There are, in my opinion, a couple of very good reasons for this:
  • it obviates the need for regulation: the state can simply run the company in an environmentally responsible way
  • it prevents the need for a trade-off between shareholder demands and regulation compliance
  • it allows for long-term investment in environmentally friendly upgrades
  • it allows for closer inspection and faster intervention in case of problems
  • it avoids having prolonged litigation of cases of pollution
  • ...

It is unfair and problematic both for the state and the private owners of companies to have a conflict over questions of environmental impact: by taking certain sectors from the open market, you remove the pressure to create profit whilst complying to regulations.

I'm sure there are more good reasons for and against this, too, but I can't think of any right now.

Books Not to Read

We all know what it's like to pick up what should be a good book, a book that comes highly recommended or has been highly anticipated... Only to discover too late that you've wasted hours of your life that you will never get back.

This is your chance to warn others before they make the same mistake.

I'll start:

Any Dune novel not written by Frank Herbert. Seriously.

Transition, by Iain Banks. Should be a fascinating multiverse novel, turns out to be elaborate revenge torture porn.

Also, any of Bank's "family" novels after Crow Road and Whit. The early ones are good, but later in his career he starts writing the same book over and over.

Wizard's First Rule and its sequels, by Terry Goodkind. The awfulness of these books is legendary.

In an effort to correct a really (no, really really) poor poll created by another member, we're going to repeat an exercise we've done before.

1. Furriners are welcome. I just put that in the headline to get some attention (which you all know I crave).

2. That being said, please answer according to the American Political Spectrum, e.g. knowing that what passes for "liberal" in America is actually quite conservative in Sanitystan where you live.

3. The spectrum will be listed from right to left. There are enough choices to allow for a little nuance and not just Rep/Dem/Ind or Conservative/Moderate/Liberal. If your particular profile is not in there, just choose the one that's closest. You know which way you lean. If you don't? Vote planet X.

Standing for the Pledge

Quote:

The Texas attorney general has jumped into a Houston area lawsuit to defend a state law that requires schoolchildren to participate in the Pledge of Allegiance unless a parent or guardian opts them out.

...

The Texas attorney general has jumped into a Houston area lawsuit to defend a state law that requires schoolchildren to participate in the Pledge of Allegiance unless a parent or guardian opts them out.

State Attorney General Ken Paxton announced Tuesday that his office has moved to intervene in the suit brought on behalf of former Windfern High School student India Landry last year.

Landry, then 17, accused the Cypress Fairbanks Independent School District and several of its officials of violating her First Amendment rights when they suspended her for refusing to stand during the pledge.

Amid nationwide protests over race relations and police brutality in America, Landry, who is black, said she took issue with this line in the pledge: “With liberty and justice for all.”

...

Kallinen pointed to President Donald Trump’s call to fire NFL players who refuse to stand for the national anthem as a reason for the hostility against Landry and others. Before Trump made that suggestion in September 2017, Kallinen, who has been a civil rights attorney for 27 years, said he’d never received a single case involving students being forced to stand and recite the pledge at schools. A few days after Trump’s comments, he said he was presented with three instances of local students who were punished for not standing and reciting the pledge.

In Landry’s case, she was ordered to leave her school on a Monday, with the principal threatening to have the police remove her if her mother didn’t arrive within five minutes, according to the lawsuit.

Landry returned to school with her mother on the following Friday. That’s when Kallinen said her mother offered the principal written permission for her daughter to sit during the pledge, but that permission was allegedly declined.

Landry’s mother was told, “It doesn’t matter ― everyone at this school stands for the Pledge of Allegiance,” Kallinen said.
Linky.

Quote:

Similar incidents have occurred in schools across the country since President Donald Trump called professional athletes who kneeled during the anthem “sons of bitches.”

Almost three dozen schools in Louisiana were instructed not to allow student-athletes to kneel during the anthem. A teacher in Farmington Hills, Michigan was put on leave for allegedly assaulting an 11-year-old student who refused to stand for the pledge. Florida schools, at one point since Trump’s comments, were threatening to send home students who didn’t stand for the anthem or pledge home unless they had parental permission.
Linky.

The Miracle Of Puerto Rico

Quote:

How Puerto Rico Became The Newest Tax Haven For The Super Rich by Jesse Barron

In 2012, Puerto Rico had passed two laws intended to make the island
a “global investment destination.” Act 20 allows corporations that export
services from the island to pay only 4 percent tax. Act 22 goes much further:
It makes Puerto Rico the only place on U.S. soil where personal income from
capital gains, interest, and dividends are untaxed.

In order to qualify for Act 22, individuals must prove to the IRS that they
have become bona fide residents of Puerto Rico, without “close contacts”
on the mainland. (Most native Puerto Ricans are not eligible for the exemption.)

Well, I obviously don't qualify. But I do wonder what it'd be like to live there.

Conspiracy theories have been cooked up throughout history, but they are increasingly visible lately, likely due in part to the president of the United States routinely embracing or creating them.

Given that any particular conspiracy theory is unlikely to be the subject of mainstream consensus, what draws people to them?

New research by Josh Hart, associate professor of psychology at Union College New York, suggests that people with certain personality traits and cognitive styles are more likely to believe in conspiracy theories. The research was recently published in the Journal of Individual Differences.

"These people tend to be more suspicious, untrusting, eccentric, needing to feel special, with a tendency to regard the world as an inherently dangerous place," Hart said. "They are also more likely to detect meaningful patterns where they might not exist. People who are reluctant to believe in conspiracy theories tend to have the opposite qualities."

Hart and his student, Molly Graether '17, surveyed more than 1,200 American adults. Participants were asked a series of questions related to their personality traits, partisan bent and demographic background. They were also asked whether they agreed with generic conspiratorial statements, such as: "The power held by heads of state is second to that of small unknown groups who really control world politics," and "Groups of scientists manipulate, fabricate or suppress evidence in order to deceive the public."...

Teacher claims she was fired for giving "Zero" grade to students.

Diane Tirado was fired from her teaching position at a Southern Florida K-8 school for giving grades of 0 to students who failed to turn in assignments, going against the school districts policy of awarding no score lower than a 50.

Full Story: https://www.actionnewsjax.com/news/t...licy/841098914

Okay unless I'm missing something (Full caveat: we've really only got the teacher's side of this. The school board make a sort of generic boilerplate statement that's in the article but it sorta didn't say anything. So grain of salt.) I really don't get this.

- These aren't students who turned in a poor project. Or an obviously half assed project. Or a late project. They literally turned in nothing. If "Zero" isn't the appropriate grade for that what is?

- Doesn't a policy of "No grade lower than a 50" just turn a 50 into the new zero? This sounds a lot like a school trying to pad its numbers.

WASP to be Deported for Unlawful Voting

http://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/...lc0?ocid=ientp
Quote:

Boase was placed in removal proceedings last month, roughly a year after he admitted during his citizenship interview with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services that, yes, he once registered to vote, and yes, he once cast a vote.
Wow, they're really getting tough. Was it a close election?

Quote:

Boase said it all began when he passed his driver’s test at an Illinois DMV in 2005, and a government employee asked him if he would like to register to vote. Despite Boase’s two forms of British identification, Boase said, the employee did not question his citizenship, leading him to believe registering would be fine.

From what Boase recalls, the vote he cast the following year was for a ballot measure to boost fire-protection resources for the local fire department. And when a friend informed him it was illegal, Boase said, “I never voted again.” ....The mere existence of a federal candidate on the ballot made Boase’s participation in the election that year a federal offense, ....
Hmmm, ignorance of the law and all that.

Quote:

Like Trump’s executive order, the new USCIS guidelines broaden the classes of immigrants that USCIS would be not only encouraged but required to deport. This includes not just those who have been convicted of a crime but also people who haven’t been, if they’ve “committed acts that are chargeable as a criminal offense.” Such acts include unlawful voting.
Perhaps we can get rid of the more dangerous people first?

Quote:

Cox said he will ask the judge on Friday to allow Boase to voluntarily depart the country, which would minimize the punishment typically associated with deportation and allow Boase to possibly return for visits.

IQ by ethnic groups and education policy

Ashkenazi Jews roll in with an average IQ of 110 or so. East Asians or American Asians, either one, is around 105. Whites break down into Northern/Western Europe at 100, the test is scaled there, and South Eastern Europe at 95. So the average is 97 between them.

And so on down the line with Australian Aborigenes clocking in at mid-60's. Sub-saharan Africa at 70. If you follow the out-of-Africa theory with the multiple waves you'll see why the Aeta in the Philippines represent a much earlier out-of-Africa wave with much lower IQ than average Filipinos.

You have some very interesting specializations with the Ashkenazi and verbal skills vs. Spatial skills in the best of the Europeans for example.

These differences are so staggering I don't know what rational education policy would not recognize them. These are just averages. At the individual level, you can much wider differences. Compare a smart Ashkenazi vs. a dumb Australian Aborigine. That's going to be IQ 140 vs. IQ 50.

The framing of our educational philosophy goes something like this: Aborigines are under-represented in brain surgery and investment banking. So we're going to put the Ashkenazi to wheel barrels and have Aboriginals do the surgery and banking.

Average income follows the IQ difference in lock step. That's too hard for me to figure. Abstract thought always eluded me.

So you have to go three deep before you can claim white guilt as the basis for income differences. Ashkenazi at the top, followed by Asian-Americans, and then whites. In that order, for average income. You can infer the rest.

The IQ differences are one reason I am so opposed to age-sorting as the primary basis for instructional level. A first-grader with a 132 IQ can be reading 5th or 7th grade material, no problem. A first grader with 105 IQ can be reading 3rd grade material. A first grader with IQ 75 cannot read. But that's who will consume the most first grade resources.

And that 75 IQ first grader can by nine years old be an apprentice at dozens of different jobs he could make a decent living at, higher than average, with an IQ such as his. In the trades. But he is going to waste a lot of years in school prison instead of making money as a plumber, pipe-fitter, welder, concrete finisher, etc.

If you do any kind of sorting by IQ in educational policy, then logically that is the same as having done ethnic sorting, on average. I suspect that's a big reason why we don't sort by IQ. Because the result is politically incorrect, even explosively so. The Ashkenazi Jew class. The Asian class. The white class, etc.

Primitive Religion - Catholicism?

The term “Primitive Religions” I have heard used a number of times. Often by Christian missionaries as they venture forth to save souls for Jesus in the Hill Tribes of Northern Thailand.

So how do we define a primitive religion? Here is a Catholic take on it:

https://www.catholicculture.org/cult...x.cfm?id=35780

Quote:

Definition

The religion of the early peoples. Strictly speaking …...

Lots of words

Two levels of primitive religions should be distinguished. The lower type either has been less directly affected by one of the major religions or shows less speculative development. It corresponds to animism or fetishism,

Lots more words.

...... and the Eskimos and Amerinds, or American Indians, in North and South America.

animism

The attribution of a living soul to plants, inanimate objects, and natural phenomena.

fetishism

Worship of an inanimate object for its supposed magical powers or because it is considered to be inhabited by a spirit: the fetishism of Aboriginally.

It seems to me Catholism is into this in a big way with it's multitude of sacred statues, paintings, rosaries, medals, and other trinkets. Having been to the Vatican a couple of times and seen the reverence shown to the Saint's statues, (shiny feet from all the touching), there is little doubt about the devotion of the faithful.

Multiple gods is seen as an indication of primitiveness, although I have seen explanations of why a single god is true that don't impress me. The three headed god of the Christians is more than a little confounding.

Standing (or not) for the Australian National Anthem

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-09-1...sbane/10235792
Quote:

Primary school student Harper Nielsen was given a lunch time detention on Friday for peacefully protesting against the song she said is "wrong".
"When it says 'we are young' it completely disregards the Indigenous Australians who were here before us for over 50,000 years," she said.
"When it was originally written, Advance Australia Fair meant advance the white people of Australia."
Harper told ABC Brisbane she felt annoyed the school was punishing her for expressing her beliefs.
The article went on to say that the school discussed the issue with the girl's parents and came to an agreement of some sort.

Not everyone was happy with the girl's actions.
Quote:

Talkback callers on ABC Radio Brisbane had mixed opinions, with some calling it "flat-out disrespect", while others said freedom of expression should be encouraged in children.

However, in a video posted on Facebook, Senator Pauline Hanson rejected the nine-year-old's views, saying "here we have a kid being brainwashed".

"I tell you what — I'd give her a kick up the backside," Senator Hanson said.

"We're talking about a child who has no idea about history — what we should do and what we need to do to pull everyone together, regardless of their cultural background — we are all Australians.
Hanson sounds rather trumpish, except he has better syntax.

There has of course been those who don't like certain parts of the American nation anthem's 3rd verse.

This is an advertisement for David Brill, Democrat who is currently running for Congress against incumbent Republican Paul Gosar in Arizona's fourth congressional district. Unanticipated information revealed at the end of the spot turns what seems like fairly standard messaging into something new and quite frankly amazing.

I'm not familiar with the political particulars in this specific race - I know that it's a strongly Republican district, meaning Gosar is quite likely to win again. Which makes this ad all that more astonishing, in my opinion.

Question related to gravity in a hollow sphere

Ok, so I might have something totally wrong here but anyway, just out of curiosity.

Considering a uniform hollow sphere, the gravitational pull outside of it pulls towards its centre but at any location inside it there is no net pull towards any point.
In 2 dimensions, does a ring have the same properties? And if there's a ring in 3 dimensions, does it have the same properties on the plane of the ring, what happens to gravity when moving perpendicular to the plane?

Thanks for any thoughts on this.

Downside to legalizing marijuana

So as best as I can tell, Donald Trump Jr. came here to Colorado, where marijuana is legal. He seems to have consumed way, way too much, such that he decided to write an exclusive Op-Ed for the Denver Post in which he thought this made sense:

Democrats are now the party of lawlessness and anarchy

Proof that one should not Op-Ed while seriously, majorly, big time stoned.

Shooting at a Maryland Rite Aid facility; suspect identified

Female shooter is unusual, but she seemed to have pent up aggression or frustration like most murder-suicide suspects.

Quote:

The Maryland shooting suspect described herself on Facebook as a “quiet” person with a “to myself type of personality” — but also proclaimed that her favorite Bible verse was “an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.”

Snochia Moseley listed the ancient phrase, known by many as the “law of retaliation,” as one of her favorite quotes.

.......But something changed in Moseley on Thursday, and the young woman allegedly snapped — shooting six co-workers, three of whom died — before turning the gun on herself.

Scientists launch net from International Space Station to capture rocket and spacecra

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-09-2...-junk/10289406

Quote:

Scientists have tossed a net into space to demonstrate how old rocket and spacecraft parts orbiting around the Earth can be removed.

In the British-led experiment, a large net was cast from a mini satellite, or microsatellite, attached to the International Space Station on Sunday.

The 5-metre net successfully travelled around 6 metres and wrapped around its target, an inflated structure that had just been deployed as part of the test.

Texas-based company NanoRacks, which developed the microsatellite deployer that cast the net from the space station, captured the launch on video and published it on Twitter.

"This is not sci-fi. We repeat, not sci-fi," the company said.

Teenage car thief killed in pursuit - Is it worth it?

Local story I heard, but don't have a link.

A 15 year old took his father's car without permission. His father reported it to the police as a stolen car - and reported his son as the thief.

APB goes out, and later that day, the police in a nearby city spot the car and try to stop him. He takes off and, in the pursuit, ends up rolling the car and is killed.

The question I have, on many levels, is, was it worth it? Does the father think it was worth it to chase the kid to the point of fatal traffic accident? Is that what he was thinking when he called the police? Pursue him at all costs?

Similarly, for the police. Is it worth getting into a chase with a 15 year old kid who took his father's car? I didn't hear a report about whether he was armed or not, but the father would presumably know that, so could provide the information.

But hey, a 15 year old taking his dad's car without permission is a menace, and so the obvious correct solution is to go after him on a wild car chase.

I don't know. Is it really worth it?

Ticketmaster busted in systemic ticket scalping scheme

By the Toronto Star and the CBC:

https://www.cbc.ca/news/business/a-p...gram-1.4828535

Box-office giant Ticketmaster is recruiting professional scalpers who cheat its own system to expand its resale business and squeeze more money out of fans, a CBC News/Toronto Star investigation reveals.

In July, the news outlets sent a pair of reporters undercover to Ticket Summit 2018, a ticketing and live entertainment convention at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.

Posing as scalpers and equipped with hidden cameras, the journalists were pitched on Ticketmaster's professional reseller program.

Company representatives told them Ticketmaster's resale division turns a blind eye to scalpers who use ticket-buying bots and fake identities to snatch up tickets and then resell them on the site for inflated prices. Those pricey resale tickets include extra fees for Ticketmaster.

"I have brokers that have literally a couple of hundred accounts," one sales representative said. "It's not something that we look at or report.

From Rolling Stone:

https://www.rollingstone.com/music/m...alpers-726353/

Music fans’ ire toward Ticketmaster for expensive concert tickets may be somewhat justified, according to a fiery investigation by CBC News and the Toronto Star on Wednesday detailing a secret scalping scheme run by the ticket sales company itself. The two outlets sent journalists undercover as scalpers to a live entertainment convention this summer, where Ticketmaster reportedly pitched them on its underground professional resale program, through which it takes a cut of profits.

As someone who ponied up over $700.00 to see Steely Dan with over $140.00 of that being the service fee, I can't wait to see how this plays out.

Semi interesting occurrence re NZ lottery this week

This might be boring

If so I apologise

Probably the most common thing with lottery some people seem to not get is the chances of it being the numbers 1,2,3,4,5 are the same as any other group of numbers, and assume it is not possible.

This week ours was nearly the next best thing

3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13

I will assume you can see the pattern here.

40 people won and shared by the way, which is the most by a country mile.

I'm no psychologist, but would imagine it is because every one except 13 can be someones birth month and they are all under 31 so cover days as well.

So think it tends to show people still use birthdates to pick their numbers

US Police and how not to do customer service.

Most people here know that in general I think most Police Officers do a good job, but if they don't then they need to have the full power of the law dropped on them from a height. This popped up in my YouTube stream today and I thought it worth sharing.

The 37 minutes of videos are mostly from TV Networks working with an Anti Police Abuse group who test how easy it is to lay a complaint against an officer.

The procedure for this, pretty much right across the US, is for the officer, or whoever is at the desk, to give the person a form, then explain how to fill it out, and who to return it to. They should usually explain that complaints can be made directly to IAB (or whoever investigates the complaints) by phone, and that any complaint can be made anonymously if the complainant wishes to do so.

The good news is that from this testing, the group has found that nationwide, about 60% of police stations are acting in accordance with the policies of their department and they need to be laundered for actually doing their job right. The other 40%... watching the video shows how bad it can be. Apparently the worst place in the US is South Florida where just three of the three dozen or so PDs tested failed, often spectacularly with officers asking entirely inappropriate questions and acting in completely inappropriate ways, even threatening those asking how to lay a complaint with arrest.

I know it's long, but it's worth watching, and learning what your rights are when wanting to lay a complaint.

A+/Network +/Security +

It's getting in that sweet spot for studying before having to re-up my certifications. The A+ I'm not overly concerned with, mostly because I'm not a complete moron. Looking for good study sites, practice tests, etc. I actually want to learn (so I don't need answer sites, just saying), and don't have an issue paying for sites. I currently have an active CBTNuggets subscription, and it's really nice; however, it's $80+ a month. I feel I could do better for a bit cheaper. I've used Boson for my CCNA, but found it not all that helpful for $100 for the practice test. I've watched a few Professor Messer videos from time to time. They're great for the price (har har har).

Anyway, guess I'm looking for any and all good techie training sites that are cheap or free. I'm also doing studying\training\certification for some virtualization platforms (VMWare, etc), and maybe Windows Server OS's.

The day America was attacked

I was taken aback by how quick bin Laden and al Qaeda were named prime suspects of 9/11 within 30 minutes of the second WTC hit. Check image in attachment and look at the time stamp. It had similarities to a different attack that took place in America in the years prior. In the following quotes, can you tell me which attack it was?

'The betting here is on Middle East terrorists,' declared CBS News' Jim Stewart just hours after the blast.

'The fact that it was such a powerful bomb in (blank) immediately drew investigators to consider deadly parallels that all have roots in the Middle East,' ABC's John McWethy proclaimed the same day.

'It has every single earmark of the Islamic car-bombers of the Middle East,' wrote syndicated columnist Georgie Anne Geyer.

'Whatever we are doing to destroy Mideast terrorism, the chief terrorist threat against Americans, has not been working,' declared the New York Times' A.M. Rosenthal.

The Allegory Conundrum

"Well yes but that is an allegory" we are told by the apologist when confronted with some particularly nasty piece of sacred scripture.

Some time ago when The Big Dog used to actually confront an issue and answer questions, I can recall this response when he was asked to justify something inscribed in his Holy Bible.

So these are the questions that confound me and I have yet to see or hear anything approaching an adequate answer:

- How do we determine if the account or instructions are allegorical? (I have asked The Big Dog this many times to no avail.)

- What is the allegorical message being given and to what purpose?

I have read for example that Jonah being swallowed by a whale big fish, and being vomited up after 3 days was an allegory for Jesus doing his 3 days dead ordeal. OK but what was the point of the story? What deep message that will help guide us through life is in there?

The cloud, iPhones and backing up data

First of all, if I am not a complete idiot will I be able to transfer the data from my iPhone 5 to my iPhone 8? A brief check online recommended I start by backing everything from the iPhone to the cloud. Although the articles I found didn't really deal with the iPhone 5, I did find tutorials involving iPhones 6 and 7.

Secondly, do people here trust "the cloud" in general?

Thirdly, I wonder if all this could be done by transferring files to a MacBook, then squirting it back into the phone.

Last time I got a new phone was 5.5 years ago and the folks at Verizon did the transfer for me. They say they don't do that anymore and that I have to go to an Apple store ... which I'd really like to avoid. So I'm just wondering if there are decent tutorials that can walk me through the process.

NZ Police use of force report 2017: US posters may find this particularly interesting

Cut a long story short our police have pretty comprehensive statistical recording of any incidents where force has had to be used by police.

It records everything from guns being discharged all the way down to handcuffs being used and bare handed.

Also official complaints by people of over use of force

2017 has been released

Makes for quite an interesting read given the propensity in stories from the US in particular to tend to go for the shoot people method of deescalating confrontations .

Couple of obvious highlights

While our police don't carry guns. The majority of police cars do carry firearms in lock boxes if the situation requires them to use them and they get permission to grab them.

Our entire police force discharged a gun 10 times in 2017: Four of were misses, three caused non-fatal injuries, and three were fatal.

Pepper spray and tasers when hands don't work are the go to and even then, just showing them the taser worked over 80% of the time

One obvious not great one is the 12% injured cops, but not sure how this compares to other countries, or frankly what counts as an "injury". Knowing our health an safety laws it could be a pricked finger.

Link is here: http://www.mythicistmilwaukee.com/schedule

Originally Mythcon focused on Jesus ahistoricitism and myths in religion, but the last few has been about social issues at large.

Topics include:

* How has the political climate divided the atheist community?
* What impact does social justice activism have on the African American community?
* Are social commentary outlets displacing the influence of mainstream media?
* What is the impact of intersectionality?
* How can we navigate the issues impacting transgender people today?
* Where do social justice, the secular community and identity politics meet? (Sargon of Akkad and Dr Richard Carrier discussion)

And Nikki Haley us as corrupt as the rest of them

State Department Spent $52,000 on Motorized Curtains for Nikki Haley's Apartment

Hey, if the cow's there for the milking, why not take some milk.

Quote:

The U.S. State Department’s budget has been slashed drastically under President Trump. But that hasn’t stopped some high-level people in government from living the high life. According to a new report, the State Department spent a whopping $52,701 on curtains for Nikki Haley’s Manhattan apartment last year.

Why are these curtains so expensive? The New York Times reports that the curtains themselves are just shy of $30,000, still an obscene price by any standard. But an additional $22,800 was spent on the motors that allow the curtains to open and close:
Oh wait, it's really in an apartment provided for her.
Quote:

The 6,000 square foot apartment on First Avenue is leased by the State Department for Nikki Haley, the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, and costs roughly $58,000 per month. The apartment is used as both Haley’s residence and for entertaining.
They all blame Obama as if they couldn't have reviewed and changed this swampy situation. And Haley of course says, "I didn't do it."

Feng Shui aka architecture woo

Thought I'd bring this forward:

Quote:

Feng shui (風水 or 风水, pronounced "feng shway") is the ancient Chinese art of arranging buildings and their interiors in order to promote a favorable balance of qi.

Historically, Feng Shui was enormously important in oriental architecture, spreading from China to surrounding countries such as Korea and Japan. As an example, temples, castles and cities were almost invariably built with their south gate being the main entrance, this being believed to be the most fortuitous direction for favourable qi.

In recent years, Feng Shui has been repurposed to create jobs for New Agers and former psychologists, to sell vacuous coffee table books, and as a way for people with more money than intelligence to correct that imbalance.

Cross-sex strip searches and "gender fluidity"

Muslim Male Inmate Objects to Strip Search by Apparently Anatomically Female Transgender Guard

Quote:

According to the plaintiff, when it was his turn to be strip searched, defendant Buhle, a female correctional officer, approached him and ordered him to strip. The plaintiff states that he asked defendant Buhle how she was able to do that and she responded, "I'm a dude." The plaintiff says he looked at the other correctional officers, "to see if this was a prank," but that they avoided eye contact with him. He alleges that at this point, he "started to panic because he knew that Officer Buhle was a female based on her female features (breasts, face, voice and demeanor) and that exposing his nakedness to her would be in violation of his Islamic beliefs ….

The plaintiff indicates that "[i]t was later brought to [his] attention that Officer Buhle is a female claiming to be a male and therefore is afforded all of the duties that the male officers perform without discrimination."

The plaintiff alleges that in anticipation of another encounter with defendant Buhle, he wrote defendants [GBCI Security Director John Kind and GBCI Warden Scott Eckstein] and requested an "[e]xemption from exposing my nakedness to the opposite sex ... because it is against Islam." On July 12, 2016, defendant Eckstein allegedly denied the plaintiff's request: "I have reviewed your correspondence and have also discussed your concerns with our Security Director. I have reviewed the situation and the officer in question is a male and is qualified to complete these duties. If in the future you are directed to submit to a strip search by this individual or any other male staff member it is my expectation that you will comply."
The Muslim part is apparently included because the lawsuit is based on the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act, but I find it pretty much irrelevant. The lawsuit could have been easily brought under the auspices of the Prison Rape Elimination Act of 2003 because the conduct appears to violate 28 CFR 115.15 (regulations implementing the Act) on its face. So, while this particular lawsuit is based on the inmate's religion, I would like this conversation to ignore it because there are other (more convincing, in my opinion) grounds for the lawsuit.

Thoughts? Should prison inmates be forced to take their clothes off in front of someone who is the opposite sex simply because they claim to "identify" with the other sex? What about people who have only been arrested and not convicted? Should a female arrestee be forced to take off her clothes at the county jail in front of a male officer who says, gruffly, "don't worry, I identify as a woman"?

Georgia's Election Insecurity

Quote:

A federal judge heard nearly 9 hours in oral arguments that alleges Georgia's current electronic elections system is too insecure. Georgia was ranked by congress as one of the 4 most vulnerable states in the us for not having a paper trail.

It's hard to know where to start with this one.

First, there's the issue of if you are a registered Georgia voter, your information, from your date of birth to your drivers license number, and even the last four digits of your social security number have all been downloaded from this allegedly secure database. Along with elections supervisor passwords.

...

Two Secretary of State officials admitted that there has been no forensic audit of the system, even looking for malicious hacking. Even after a researcher told them he had hacked the system.

6 months later, it was still open. They still admit they did nothing to decontaminate. Those Secretary of State officials testified that they actually did not even know that the voter information and elections supervisor passwords were downloaded and did not investigate.

The defense's argument: too little time and too little money. The switch an impossibility, like putting wings on an elephant and hoping he'll fly.

Former Secretary of State Cathy Cox testified on their behalf that the system is flawed but said the switch would cause chaos beyond belief.
Linky.

There were 17 candidates starting out in the Republican primaries, so many that there had to be two separate debates. Most candidates were current and former senators, congressmen and governors, with extensive public service backgrounds. The cast of characters also included a surgeon with no political experience or even worldly knowledge, and a corrupt real estate huckster with mob connections whose ignorance was only surpassed by his prejudice, delusions and meanness.

Of course we know who won. Question: Can both parties -- but particularly the Republicans -- develop fair rules that would prevent anyone like Trump from placing their name on their party's primary ballot? At a minimum, previous experience in national political office could be required. What else? Should literally anybody be able to run in a primary? Would "rank-voting" -- choose first choice, second choice, etc. -- be a solution? Discuss.

What were you 'raised' to believe?

I was 'raised' in a 900 square foot home on small farm, with a brother, a half brother, an adopted sister, three foster kids, and a mom and dad.

I was told that Numerology, water well witching, Astrology, Leprechauns, Fairy's, Palm Reading, God, Spirits, Ghosts, Ouija Boards (we sent untold HOURS on that) and legends and ******** of all kind were 100% FACT, true, and to be honoured, and believed.

As a grade schooler I was belittled, shamed and beaten, for standing up for my mom's beliefs.

I started realizing my mother was insane when I was about 12 years old (finally found out Santa was fake) , and when I could out think, out smart and out debate her as a daily routine, I stated to what we would callow think critically.

It took me 4 or 5 more years to realize that none of these items were scientific .. Start Trek the original series TV Show .. really helped .. I learned a lot from that show :)

How were you raised?

Fart Filter

There is a new invention. It's a little thing that you stick in your butt. If you fart it will not be a noisy or stinky fart. Brilliant, but what does it feel like and why can't we just use a cigarette filter instead?...

No more smelly breaking wind? Inventor claims he has created a filter that eliminates odours and noise when passing gas

The product is said to catch the gas, stopping any unappealing odours from escaping, and also help to alleviate pain as the user will be able to avoid a build up of wind which could lead to bloating.

According to the website, 'oxxxo Bodykat' is meant for people with food intolerance, irritable bowel syndrome, damaged gut flora or incontinence...

The inventor said: 'I've stirred up a hornet's nest. Except nobody talks about it.'

After applying for eight years for a European Union-wide patent, the inventor has finally received one and is now looking for business partners so mass production can begin after he has received 30,000 orders...

Stay Classy, NRA.

https://www.cnn.com/2018/09/13/enter...rnd/index.html

WHat the hell does this have to do with the Second Amendment?
This is why I quit the NRA over 20 years ago; they changed from a group protecting private gun ownership to a group promoting right wing conspiracy crap.

Ghostly lady seen by a reddit user in New Mexico

User Logicnsuch posted this on RW:

The guy who took the photo says he was taking a picture of a wildfire, and this lady was in the photo, but she wasn't there when he took it. This, then, is the diversion: What's going on in this picture, and what's this ghost lady doing here? You could say Photoshop, of course, but try and be a little more creative than that. This website says this photo has skeptics "stumped". Prove the website wrong. I'm as clueless as you are about this thing. A fun little game for the amateur skeptic. Let the debunking begin.

In the distance he noticed a wild fire and wanted to get some photos. He pulled over and began photographing the scenery. At the time, there was nothing unusual of note except for the plumes of smoke in the background.

Several weeks later when he got the photos developed he was shocked at what he saw. Right in the foreground is a mysterious lady in blue. The uncle insisted that no one else was around when he took the photos.

The lady has sunken black eyes and a strange dark complexion. Her nose appears skeletal and her jaw looks gaunt and detached. There’s a shadow quality to her features that makes this photo eerie to look at. Her thin, outstretched arm ends in a stump with no fingers.

The exact date the photo was taken is unknown but it’s obviously printed from film. It’s possible then that this could be a malfunction which has blended two images together. Yet the unsettling features of the woman in blue remain. Who is she and why has she appeared in this photo?

I have some other questions in mind than that:

1. What's up with that white mark? Some greasy fingerprint?
2. Wildfire? I can hardly see any smoke. Who says there isn't a waterfall or some geysers in that area?*
3. For a "Ghost", her T-Shirt is really colorful...

Looks like this picture was taken in the late evening, which would explain the shadow over the woman. Also "Stump with no fingers"? That clearly looks like a fist that she's making.

Anyone from New Mexico here? Or someone who knows where exactly this was taken? Gonna link this topic to that Ghost Woo-meister on RW, so.

*Are there any users from New Mexico that can shed some light upon this aswell?

Monuments to the Confederacy and those who fought for it are monuments to treason.

Do you have a list of Confederates who were tried for treason? There were millions of Confederates, but I'll settle for say -- five. If they were all traitors at least five of them should have been tried and executed for treason.

Would you say the Vietnam Memorial is a monument to battle against Communism or a monument to the people who fought and died there?
