Trump's 1st Gun Grab; is it a Gun or Not?

My stance on Trump style gun control is not popular at all, especially with self-professed gun owners who claim to be 2nd amendment proponents. I posted a few memes about Trump's gun control attitudes and they're pissing off a few people here and there.

https://imgur.com/gallery/9zpaTmY
https://imgur.com/pP7q3n5

I'm not making any friend's at the Conservative Underground either. :) But as horrid as the CU is, the Democratic Underground was even worse as I lasted only a few months there and was banned for some reason.

So for all you people who care to give your opinion, are bump stocks firearms or non-firearms?

Here is the letter of the law. https://www.federalregister.gov/docu...k-type-devices
Quote:

The Department of Justice is amending the regulations of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) to clarify that bump-stock-type devices—meaning “bump fire” stocks, slide-fire devices, and devices with certain similar characteristics—are “machineguns” as defined by the National Firearms Act of 1934 and the Gun Control Act of 1968
The new regulation goes into effect March 26, 2019. I'm calling it Trump's 1st gun grab and getting lots of flak; so far anyone with an opinion on the matter says they're not guns so Trump is not a gun grabber.

So... mass, eh?

So I'm still struggling with GR, which probably comes as no surprise to anyone who's noticed it being a case of me being too lazy to learn it properly. So, I have couple of questions for the smarter people around.

1. Relativistic mass. Which now some tell me doesn't even really exist, which really confuzzles me. Well, that's SR actually, but I'm curious which mass goes into GR to deform space. Is it that the rest mass, or the one with the gamma?

2. The kugelblitz black hole, or rather how does the above work with one. One thing I do remember is that photons don't have rest mass, which is why they can go at c. So, wouldn't one need the relativistic mass for gravity for the kugelblitz to turn into a black hole?

3. Gravitons. Obviously they can't have rest mass, since they go at c too, but do they carry energy? Which I suppose boils down to: do they have momentum? If they do have energy, does it warp space too?

Israel's Benjamin Netanyahu to be indicted on corruption charges

Quote:

(CNN) Jerusalem - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will be charged with bribery, fraud and breach of trust arising from three separate corruption investigations, pending a hearing, according to a source with direct knowledge of the decision by Israel's attorney general, in a major blow to Netanyahu as he seeks a fifth term in office.

Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit's intention to indict the Prime Minister so close to April's general election marks a dramatic moment in Israeli politics.
Netanyahu's opponents will likely look to exploit a heightened sense of damage to the Prime Minister's reputation, while his coalition partners must now decide whether to support a leader who looks set to be indicted, or withdraw their support and risk alienating their shared right-wing voter base.

Question about the principle that information is never lost

One thing I have trouble understanding in physics is the principle that information is never lost. Sean Carroll explains the principle like this:

Quote:

If you take an encyclopedia and toss it into a fire, you might think the information contained inside is lost forever. But according to the laws of quantum mechanics, it isn’t really lost at all; if you were able to capture every bit of light and ash that emerged from the fire, in principle you could exactly reconstruct everything that went into it, even the print on the book pages.
But as far as I can see you couldn't do this even in principle. If you could capture all the information every bit of light and ash and then work backwards, in principle, to reconstruct the encyclopedia it would imply that you could get that information, in principle, to an arbitrarily high precision.

But isn't it also a principle of physics that you can't, even in principle, get all of that information to an arbitrarily high precision?

So you can't take the remnants of the encyclopedia and reconstruct the encyclopedia, even in principle.

Carroll addresses the point by saying that the state is not given by a set of little bits of information, but by a single wave function, the evolution of which is completely reversible.

But I don't see how this helps you go from all the bits of ash and light back to the original encyclopedia. If you (or some supercharged version of Laplace's Demon) could know the wave function for the system and evolve it backwards they still wouldn't be able to pick out an individual encyclopedia which was the prior state of those bits of light and ash.

"To remain silent was not an option for me"

Quote:

Xavier Bettel, who is the first openly-gay prime minister to ever be re-elected for a second term, did not shy away from discussing homophobia at the summit between the EU and the Arab League.

Indeed, Bettel brought a room to silence when he reminded those present that he is married to a man and if he lived in some of the countries represented at the summit, he would face the death penalty for his sexuality. The statesman confronted those countries with their homophobia by being present at the summit and highlighting his sexuality.

Sesquizygotic Twins

Scientists stunned by discovery of 'semi-identical' twins

Quote:

A pair of twins have stunned researchers after it emerged that they are neither identical nor fraternal – but something in between.

The team say the boy and girl, now four years old, are the second case of semi-identical twins ever recorded, and the first to be spotted while the mother was pregnant.

The situation was a surprise to the researchers. An ultrasound of the 28-year old mother at six weeks suggested the twins were identical – with signs including a shared placenta. But it soon became clear all was not as it seemed...

Question about climate change

Good evening.

I have a question about global warming that I was hoping folks could help me with.

I see from the Vostok ice core data graph 2, posted in a link below, that over the last 18,000 years CO2 ppm has gradually increased from about 180 ppm to a little less than 300 ppm.

However during this period of gradual CO2 ppm increase, we see average temperatures often increase dramatically (+2.5C) then decrease dramatically, even though there is no sudden change in CO2 ppm (according to the graph).

My question is: do the Vostok ice cores also show periods of rapid and sudden CO2 ppm increase with no corresponding increase in temperature?

Thanks for your help.

Michael Cohen's Congressional testimony

I feel like this should probably have its own thread.

First, here is his opening written statement in full.

And here is the TL/DR version, thanks to the Failing New York Times.

It's worth bearing in mind that there is claimed documentary support for much of what Cohen is going to say, and that he's already said much, if not all, of what he's going to say to Mueller - in other words, if he contradicts what he's already testified to, then he's in serious legal trouble beyond the trouble he's already in.

Dissing White People While Speaking Xhosa

Someone's probably mentioned this in another thread, but Trevor Noah got off one of the best lines in Oscar history and it deserves its own thread.

https://www.npr.org/sections/goatsan...k-panther-joke

Noah, who speaks Xhosa, quoted an old Wakandan adage that he told the audience means something warm and fuzzy. He got the requisite amount of applause. What the line really meant was "White people don't know that I'm lying."

Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act

So I'm trying to debate this bill on Facebook and the Conservative Underground forum.

https://www.congress.gov/bill/116th-...-bill/130/text
Quote:

“(1) DEGREE OF CARE REQUIRED; IMMEDIATE ADMISSION TO A HOSPITAL.—Any health care practitioner present at the time the child is born alive shall—

“(A) exercise the same degree of professional skill, care, and diligence to preserve the life and health of the child as a reasonably diligent and conscientious health care practitioner would render to any other child born alive at the same gestational age; and

“(B) following the exercise of skill, care, and diligence required under subparagraph (A), ensure that the child born alive is immediately transported and admitted to a hospital.
So duh! If a child is born alive even it is an abortion, they are not allowed to be killed for any reason. For example in WA, RCW 9A.32.055 says;
Quote:

RCW 9A.32.055
Homicide by abuse.
(1) A person is guilty of homicide by abuse if, under circumstances manifesting an extreme indifference to human life, the person causes the death of a child or person under sixteen years of age, ....
(3) Homicide by abuse is a class A felony.
In WA this is life in prison. S.130 would add 5 years to the sentence.

But it also shields the birth mother.
Quote:

“(c) Bar to prosecution.—The mother of a child born alive described under subsection (a) may not be prosecuted for a violation of this section, an attempt to violate this section, a conspiracy to violate this section, or an offense under section 3 or 4 of this title based on such a violation.
So what am I missing? Does this law do anything? I'm told that doctors are murdering babies that are born alive during an abortion procedure and are not being charged. I can't find anything on this though.

So am I really just debating people who want to shield mothers from prosecution for killing their babies after an abortion?

Democratic Party Charter and ByLaws

While my immediate reason for this thread is to provide a more appropriate venue to discuss issues of what is and isn't in the charter and bylaws, but also to discuss what others think should or should not be in the Democratic Party charter and bylaws.

Charter and Bylaws of the Democratic Party of the United States

Quote:

PREAMBLE
We, the Democrats of the United States of America, united in common purpose, hereby rededicate ourselves to the principles which have historically sustained our Party. Recognizing that the vitality of the Nation's political institutions has been the foundation of its enduring strength, we acknowledge that a political party which wishes to lead must listen to those it would lead, a party which asks for the people's trust must prove that it trusts the people and a party which hopes to call forth the best the Nation can achieve must embody the best of the Nation's heritage and traditions.
What we seek for our Nation, we hope for all people: individual freedom in the framework of a just society, political freedom in the framework of meaningful participation by all citizens. Bound by the United States Constitution, aware that a party must be responsive to be worthy of responsibility, we pledge ourselves to open, honest endeavor and to the conduct of public affairs in a manner worthy of a society of free people.
Under God, and for these ends and upon these principles, we do establish and adopt this Charter of the Democratic Party of the United States of America...
My initial discussion will be with regard to the issue of a system of checks and balances in the charter and bylaws, and my belief that a focus on this is essential to help put democracy back into the forefront of the Democratic Party thinking, leadership, and practices. That said, I think a lot can be gained with an open exploration and discussion of the elements of the Democratic Party of the United Sates Charter and Bylaws as we head toward another very crucial set of national primaries and elections with debates starting ~ 3 months from now. Our Democracy depends upon an involved and informed electorate to help reform and prevent the mistakes of the past, while we explore paths to improve our nation's public policies and elected public servants. I don't think this conversation should be limited to the followers of any single candidate, party or nationality, but I do want to stick pretty close to discussing the Democratic Party's charter and bylaws in this thread.

US Media is not giving it much coverage because they are so wrapped up on domestic politics.
But it very easily could become a huge crisis.

Skeptics set trap, "psychic" walks right into it

A great story about how a skeptic group set a trap for a famous psychic/dead person talker a la John Edward.

https://www.csicop.org/specialarticl..._-_thomas_john

Summary:
They created a fake backstory of the woman having a dead twin named Andy and her husband having a recently deceased father. That's pretty much all THEY knew about it. Meanwhile, they created a sham facebook account for her where there was a bunch of discussion (by their collaborators, they never saw any of it) of her upcoming visit to see the psychic guy, and in that course of that discussion there were a lot of faux details shared about them.

So they go to the "reading" and sure enough, the psychic brings up her supposed dead twin brother and her husband's dead father and starts rattling off a bunch of details about them... that only existed on Facebook. Whoops. Amazing psychic guys, so good at hot readings....

The story is apparently going to be in the NYT this weekend.

Jackson gay rights leader accused of burning down own home

All I have to say on this, is that from the sounds of it, the guy did a hell of a lot of good. But if the police are able to prove their case, it's going to cause a lot of damage.

Quote:

When the home of Nikki Joly burned down in 2017, killing five pets, the FBI investigated it as a hate crime.

After all, the transgender man and gay rights activist had received threats after having a banner year in this conservative town.

...

Authorities later determined the fire was intentionally set, but the person they arrested came as a shock to both supporters and opponents of the gay rights movement. It was the citizen of the year — Nikki Joly.

https://www.detroitnews.com/story/ne...me/2816523002/

I will note from the article that unlike the Smollet case, there does not seem to have been any suspicion that this would be the result of the investigation.

Could you pass a US citizenship test?

According to the Woodrow Wilson Foundation, only 36% of Americans can score a passing grade on this test (passing is defined as at least 60% correct, a fairly low bar).

https://woodrow.org/americanhistory/

I got 18/19 for 94.7%. A few of the questions are a little tricky so read them carefully. Not really tricky I guess, but make sure you understand the question correctly.

Bonus points if you are not an American but you can pass this.

Firefox "Quantum" sucks

This driving anyone else nuts? I THOUGHT when I used their "update installer" that it was going to install v56, not this Quantum thing that was supposedly not due out until the spring. But after install that's what I got...and I can't stream anything. It tells me it's "installing audio and video components that were not part of the original install." WTF kind of bonehead install did it do then? And that was hours ago.

Regardless, I see absolutely zero improvement on any front with this thing anyway. Going to try and find an earlier version before this so-called improvement. Not recommended.

Judge Rules Men-Only Military Draft Unconstitutional

Judge Rules Men-Only Military Draft Unconstitutional
https://www.military.com/daily-news/...itutional.html

Quote:

"Forcing only males to register is an aspect of socially institutionalized male disposability and helps reinforce the stereotypes that support discrimination against men in other areas" such as divorce, child custody and domestic violence services, Angelucci said.

"Women are now allowed in combat, so this decision is long overdue," he added. "After decades of sex discrimination against men in the Selective Service, the courts have finally found it unconstitutional to force only men to register."
So, should women have to register for the draft?

Medium to the Stars?

Flipping channels I came across a show that is about a young man, Tyler Henry, who is the 'go-to' "medium to the stars". Which means he "reads" D-list-has-beens, like former reality-show "stars" from years ago.

Anyway, I hung in for a few minutes. Does anyone have any information on him as a fraud? I didn't watch enough to determine if he is a cold or hot reader. I imagine that the low-rent "celebrities" probably have a great deal of their lives published.

Opinions? Facts?

Thanks.

Thousands of people have witnessed a fly-past honouring 10 US airmen who died when their plane crashed in a Sheffield park 75 years ago.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-englan...shire-47323045

I kind of followed this story, and it was quite touching.

In 1944 a boy playing in a park saw a bomber crash, killing everyone on board. Since then he has tended the memorial that was put up, and a random encounter with a BBC presenter resulted in a full fly past involving the USAF and RAF to honour the crew.

Labor Secretary Alex Acosta Violated the Rights of the Victims of Jeffrey Epstein

Labor Secretary Alex Acosta, other federal prosecutors violated the rights of Jeffrey Epstein's sex-crime victims, judge rules

Quote:

Federal prosecutors, including current Labor Secretary Alex Acosta, violated the rights of sex criminal Jeffrey Epstein's victims during their investigation of the once-influential financier a decade ago, a judge ruled on Thursday.

U.S. District Judge Kenneth Marra slammed the government for failing to notify Epstein's victims that it had reached a non-prosecution agreement with Epstein while leading those victims to believe that federal charges were still a possibility.

"It was a material omission for the Government to suggest to the victims that they have patience relative to an investigation about which it had already bound itself not to prosecute," Marra wrote in a 33-page opinion.

Fox News Host Gets Triggered by Historian

Dutch historian Rutger Bregman made was invited to speak at the Davos World Economic Forum; basically a billionaire's meeting. He made the news when he used the opportunity to call out the elites on their hypocrisy.

Now he was interviewed by millionaire Tucker Carlson of Fox News. The uppity historian did not hesitate to call out the hypocrisy of the millionaire.
Most of the people in Davos, but also here on this channel, have been bought by the billionaire class, you’re not meant to say these things.

The millionaire controls the information ladled out to millions of Americans and he knows it. The criticism of the historian quickly drove him to melt-down:
"I want to say to you — why don’t you go **** yourself, you tiny brain — and I hope this gets picked up because you’re a moron, I tried to give you a hearing but you were too ******* annoying …"

Well played, Mister Bregman.

Visiting Morocco while being daft, naïve European girls

and you get beheaded.

As was the case for two young ladies traveling together, Maren Ueland of Norway and Louisa Vesterager Jespersen of Denmark. The girls were "chasing experiences" in Morocco  according to Louisa's mother.

Before the killings, one of the murderers had sworn allegiance to ISIS, stating,"keep fighting the enemies of Allah, wherever you are, you have no excuse and, be informed that we are your supporters... you have allies among us."

Meanwhile, in la la land (formerly known as Europe) one of the girls posted a idiotic and poorly directed pro-muslim video with a message of "not to judge people by their appearances." (that worked out well for them.)

https://www.moroccoworldnews.com/201...before-murder/

I've noted earlier Europeans have started experiencing religious euphoria over showing how "not racist" they are. These two girls died in their quest for religious euphoria. The makers of that poorly directed video have blood on their hands as far as I'm concerned. What kind of nonsense are young people being programmed with in Western Europe? It's wonderful when a white person commits a drug related offense but not a Muslim. This is suppose to be heart-warming? Who comes up with this stuff?

You can view video of the beheadings online for those so inclined. It's gruesome. Not as gruesome as a man being told to leave a yogurt shop, but still gruesome.

Not so Simple Aritmetic or is it

Saw this on another forum and the debate on the correct answer was interesting to me. No idea where it was originally was from. I thought I'd bring it here to see what the smart crowd does with it. Two possible answers - 15 or 60 which is correct.

My take on which answer is correct:

I believe 15 is correct based on PEMDAS but the way I was taught in grade school the answer would be 60 but then in those days printing was the new thing.

Supreme Court Limits Civil Asset Forfeiture

SCOTUS has taken the bold, almost extremist position that "The police can just take whatever the want from you for no reason without convicting or even charging you, indeed with no burden of proof of any kind, and never get it back" might, just might, be a bad thing.

NPR:
Quote:

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled unanimously Wednsesday that the Constitution's ban on excessive fines applies to state and local governments, thus limiting their ability to use fines to raise revenue.

The court's decision, written by Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, was announced by her on her second day back at the court. Ginsburg missed in-person arguments at the court for the first time in her quarter century on the Supreme Court bench after undergoing surgery for lung cancer late last year.

The court's opinion came in the case of Tyson Timbs, whose $42,000 Land Rover was seized by the state of Indiana after he was arrested for selling a small amount of heroin to undercover cops for $400.

Trump Proposes Global Push to End Criminalization of Homosexuality

This is already causing some cognitive dissonance:

Quote:

The Trump administration is launching a global campaign to end the criminalization of homosexuality in dozens of nations where it's still illegal to be gay, U.S. officials tell NBC News, a bid aimed in part at denouncing Iran over its human rights record.

U.S. Ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell, the highest-profile openly gay person in the Trump administration, is leading the effort, which kicks off Tuesday evening in Berlin. The U.S. embassy is flying in LGBT activists from across Europe for a strategy dinner to plan to push for decriminalization in places that still outlaw homosexuality — mostly concentrated in the Middle East, Africa and the Caribbean.

Glitter Banned from Mardi Gras

All that shimmers isn't gold, as Mardi Gras goes for green and bans glitter

Quote:

It's as synonymous with Mardi Gras as drag queens and shirtless dancing men, but can the world famous pride parade shine without glitter?

We are about to find out, as this year the event organisers have committed to phasing out the sparkly stuff for environmental reasons, as well as banning balloons and single-use plastic water bottles from its major events.

Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras chief executive Terese Casu said the plan was to make the event completely carbon neutral within five years.

"We used to bring in about three tonnes of glitter from China," Ms Casu said. "That goes in the gutter, it ends up in our oceans, our fish eat it, you find it in crab shells and oysters. We must be responsible and make really urgent changes."

Glitter is a microplastic (plastic less than five millimetres in length), which causes harm to marine life that mistake it for food. As a result, humans can ingest the microplastics via seafood and even tap water. Balloons also cause major problems, with the attached strings strangling birds, while other animals and sea life often mistake the shape of a burst balloon for jellyfish.

...

A key researcher at the University of Sydney's Sydney Environment Institute, associate professor Ruth Barcan, hopes we're "at a tipping point around plastics and action".

"If an organisation like Mardi Gras can say that - an event like that, which is almost the epitome of the synthetic and plastic, if they can do it, that is an extraordinarily potent cultural symbol," Dr Barcan said.

For those committed to glitter, there are environmentally friendly glitter options, such as those made from the cellulose of eucalyptus trees.

"I'm hoping now we'll set the mark high and take a leadership role in [going carbon neutral] and promote other it at other festivals," Ms Casu said. "Because it does make such a difference and the amount of waste we use at festivals, it's got to stop."

Oxford anthropologists identify seven universal rules of morality

Quote:

In the largest cross-cultural survey ever conducted, a team of anthropologists from the University of Oxford has determined seven moral rules they suggest are universal. Based on the examination of ethnographic accounts from 60 different societies the research concludes that while morality may not necessarily be innate, every single culture analyzed seems to be ruled by the same moral precepts.

The seven moral rules seen in every culture studied ultimately come down to:

- Family values
- Group loyalty
- Reciprocity
- Bravery
- Respect
- Fairness
- Property rights

US & Canadian Diplomats Sue Their Governments

There’s already a thread about the ’Havana syndrome’ in Social Issues & Current Events: Alien Attack? Mass Hysteria? Conspiracy?/US may close Cuba Embassy over 'health attacks', but now the case has turned into a lawsuit because both Canadian and U.S. American diplomats are suing their respective governments, which is what interests me here. The Canadian case can be summed up as follows:

Quote:

Five Canadian diplomats say in a 28 million Canadian dollar ($21 million) lawsuit that the government failed to protect them, hid crucial information and downplayed the seriousness of the risks.
The Canadian government acknowledges that nine adults and five children from diplomatic families have developed unusual illnesses in Havana.
The lawsuit said that not only "were the diplomats prevented from considering the true risks of a Havana posting to their own health, but they were also denied the opportunity to protect their children, and must live with the knowledge that they may never fully recover."
Canadian diplomats file suit over injuries suffered in Cuba (Japan Today, Feb. 8, 2019)

At this stage it seems impossible for the Canadian government to claim that the diplomats and their families weren't actually harmed since Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau has stated that:

Quote:

... there was “no question that the health impacts on diplomats in Cuba have been visible and real,” pushing back on suggestions that the diplomats merely suffered from mass hysteria or psychosomatic symptoms.
Medical testing on diplomats evacuated from both Canada and Cuba have led doctors to conclude that the diplomats developed symptoms and medical issues that can’t be faked, NBC News has reported.

“We’ve been taking it very, very seriously from the beginning, and we will continue to take very seriously the health and safety of all Canadians who serve anywhere overseas,” Trudeau said in Ontario. He said Canada has continued to work with local authorities in Cuba to investigate.
(Press from, Feb. 9, 2019)

Now, I would say that the plaintiffs had a good case if they accused their respective governments of mishandling a case of mass psychogenic illness, but still it's no real surprise that the victims of the alleged health attacks insist that they were real and not hysteria caused by paranoia and the sound of crickets. In a radio interview their lawyer says:

Quote:

”The cricket stories infuriated my clients” (...) ”my clients were really not happy with that,” since they seem to think that ”its an effort to change the narrative.”
(…)
“We have people who are injured. The bottom line. Doctors have come on and said, ‘these people are injured.’”[/i]
(…)
“Their allegation against the Canadian government is that you knew there was a problem, you knew people were falling ill, and you asked us not to say anything, and you left us in Cuba.”
'Havana Syndrome' Canadian diplomats who worked in Cuba suing for $28M - Larry talks to Personal Injury Lawyer Paul Miller with Howie, Sacks & Henry LLP (Newstalk 610 CKTB)
(Like some of the diplomats, my hearing is impaired so I have problems hearing some of the comments from the lawyer who is interviewed on the phone, not in the studio. Unlike the diplomats, however, I don't blame Cuban crickets or microwaves. The experts say that in my case it's due to age and genetics ...)

How will the respective government lawyers handle a case like this?
In my opinion, both governments are guilty - but not as charged! They are guilty of not only neglecting to take a case of mass psychogenic illness seriously but actually aggravating it by denying all the evidence delivered by the scientific community - apart from the reports that they commissioned from their own government agencies. Robert E. Bartholomew, an expert in mass hysteria/mass psychogenic illness says:

Quote:

I have no doubt that the Trump Administration, which has consistently claimed that an attack took place (including Trump himself), now realize that they have made a mistake, but they do not want to admit it. The facts in this case are beyond clear and compelling; they are definitive. Any talk of a sonic attack is science fiction. Now some people are trying to move the goalposts and claim it was a microwave attack. There is even less evidence for that than a sonic attack.
Were the ‘Sonic Attacks’ on American Diplomats Just Sci-Fi? (Skeptic Inquirer, Feb. 5, 2019)

And it will probably be extremely embarrassing for the governments to admit that they were wrong all along. So what will they do?

My 1st Facebook Post to be Removed

I've been dumping on Trump a lot lately on Facebook. Some of my trash talk is about Trump's gun grab and his views on the 5th and 2nd amendments that should have actual gun nuts up in arms. But some of my "friends" have turned into anti-gun freaks in order to stay on Trump's wavelength. It's weird to say the least. Below is one of my more benign posts on Facebook regarding Trump. It got removed. I requested that the decision be reviewed.

Grand Canyon tourists exposed for years to radiation in museum building, safety manager says

Quote:

For nearly two decades at the Grand Canyon in Arizona, tourists, employees, and children on tours passed by three paint buckets stored in the National Park's museum collection building, unaware that they were being exposed to radiation.

Although federal officials learned last year that the five-gallon containers were brimming with uranium ore, then removed the radioactive specimens, the park's safety director alleges nothing was done to warn park workers or the public that they might have been exposed to unsafe levels of radiation.

The Sackler Lawsuit

Purdue Pharma and its owners, the Sackler family, are blamed for playing the major part in creating the US opiod epidemic.

Quote:

While the company settled lawsuits in 2009 totaling $2.7 million brought by family members of those who had been harmed by OxyContin throughout the country, the company amped up its marketing of the drug to physicians by spending $121.6 million on sales reps for the coming year. The Sacklers paid themselves $335 million that year.

Geogia Speaker of the House Abuses his Position to Delay Criminal Trials

Alleged victims say powerful Georgia lawmaker repeatedly delays cases

Quote:

David Shell has a long record of beating up women.

He once beat his ex-wife so badly she blacked out, her left eye nearly swollen shut, then he locked her in their home so she couldn’t reach a hospital, she said.

...

Yet more than four years after his indictment, Shell remains a free man, the charges against him stymied. A big reason: He paid a large retainer fee to hire an attorney who is also one of Georgia’s most powerful lawmakers, state Speaker of the House David Ralston.

Just as Ralston has done for other clients charged with violent or heinous crimes, he used his elected position to delay hearings and court dates, preventing the case from moving forward in the Gilmer County justice system.

“That’s why I gave him 20,000 bucks,” Shell told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “He’s worth every penny of it.”

.
Ralston has tied up cases for clients charged with child molestation, child cruelty, assault, terroristic threats, drunk driving and other crimes.
What a corrupt monster.

Former grave of Karl Marx vandalised. Twice.

BBC News: Karl Marx - Monument vandalised for second time in two weeks

"Karl Marx's memorial in north London has been vandalised for the second time in two weeks.

The words "Doctrine of Hate" and "Architect of Genocide" are scrawled in red on the Grade I-listed grave in Highgate Cemetery.

This latest incident follows a "deliberate and sustained" hammer attack on 4 February that left the memorial badly damaged.

There have been no arrests in connection with either attack.

Friends of Highgate Cemetery Trust said the German philosopher's memorial would "never be the same again" following the previous attack."

Previous attack reported here.

I don't recall the first attack even being on the TV news, while the second may have only been on the BBC London local news. Recent vandalism of the Bomb Command Memorial has certainly been more widely reported.

It's worth highlighting that the cemetery is not open to the public, except by fee-paying tours organised by the trust which owns it. This is quite a bone of contention in many circles, given the number of prominent burials and memorials in the grounds, including over 300 designated war graves.

Somewhat ironically, Alexander Litvinenko is also buried there, obviously deeper than usual, and in a lead-lined coffin.

Screw Loose Change - Not Freakin' Again Edition: Remastered

Good afternoon all

So it recently came to my attention that about 2 months ago Korey Rowe uploaded an HD remake of 'Loose Change 2nd Edition' on YouTube.

A second edition of the second edition...

This was rather fortunate, as in the last year or so I've noticed that there are no copies of 'Screw Loose Change' online anymore. I have a copy on my computer but the quality is so poor I was considering for a while of remaking it.

But upon viewing this HD Loose Change I noticed that the film was completely redone. There was clearer pictures, footage and animations, and even Dylan was brought back in to narrate it all again.

But what most surprised me is that the content of it was a little different too. Only a couple of very minor 'new' things, most of the changes was the removal of a fair amount of claims.

Still, stunned that someone would remake a 2005 conspiracy film in 2018 and not include any of the massive quantity of previously unreleased 9/11 information now available to the public, I figured this would be a great opportunity for me to not only remake Screw Loose Change with HD footage, but also add to it the plethora of new information which is now available to us compared to when Mark originally produced it in 2006.

So without further ado I present:

Screw Loose Change - Not Freakin' Again Edition: Remastered

Which will most likely get a DMCA copyright strike put on it by those 'Louder Than Words' *nice guys* within a couple of weeks, and so if it does I'll just upload it to LiveLeak and put a link here.

[yt]r8Lw5WR-0gk[/yt]

I managed to get most the original pictures and videos which Mark used, and even managed to track down and redo most the tinyurl links which didn't work anymore (but now do) however there were a couple of sources which I just could not find anymore.

I'm pretty confident most the extra stuff I added is accurate though I may have got some minor details wrong. I've been out of the 9/11 game for so long I've started forgetting the detailed specifics and frankly can't be arsed looking it all back up again :D

Enjoy!

p.s. there are a couple of minor grammar errors floating around in this, so sorry for that...

Bullies are cowards

I thought this section was appropriate as there have been many threads about violence and bullying, but if mods want to move it, fair enough.

I have lived my long life in the belief that anyone who threatens you with violence will never carry it out. I’m batting .100 here. The ones who will are those who just hit you with no warning, and I’ve experienced this a few times - I was brought up in a tough part of Sydney.

Anyway after a very hard week involving much unpaid overtime I thought I would take my wife out to a Gold Class movie at Crown Casino in Melbourne (“On the matter of sex” an excellent movie) followed by lunch at the Atlantic.

At a nearby table at lunch a rather large, fat man wanted to go outside for a smoke and take his manbag with him. The staff said he couldn’t do this as it was against policy. Perfectly understandable as what is to stop a runner? So now commenced 10 minutes of abuse, vitriol and threats, including, unbelievably “Do you know who I am?”.

At this point Mrs Lionking looked me firmly in the eye and said “say nothing or I’ll walk out”. We had finished our meal and I started to walk out to pay at the counter. A member of staff said, “it’s okay sir, we will take your bill to the table. My response was “Sorry I don’t want to sit next to this pig any longer, I’ll pay at the counter”.

So I continued to walk there, as my wife headed for the door. Lo and behold the pig came up and said “Are you calling me a pig?”. My default position kicked in. “Yes, because you are”. “Did you know what the staff said to me?” “Yes, you are still a pig”.

After a bit of eyeballing and finger pointing, he went back to his table. At no stage was I scared.

The manager refused to take my card, said “thanks for supporting my staff” and shook my hand.

Stand up to bullies guys. They are cowards.

Dachshund bound with duct tape, tossed in freezing ditch

I'm not sure there's a thread here but it did jump out at me:

Man accused of wrapping dog in duct tape before throwing it out vehicle window in Jefferson County

It's sad it happened, happy that dog was rescued. Judging by a video of his reunion with owner he is not too much the worse for wear.

Why?!!! Did it bark too much?

A man was arrested based on a fingerprint lifted from the duct tape. Bail set at $50,000.

The Robots Taking the Jobs Industry

In the NGD thread, kellyb posted this article by Dean Baker, meant to put the worries about massive unemployment due to automation into perspective.

http://cepr.net/blogs/beat-the-press...-jobs-industry

a short read and definitely worth it.

I'd like to comment on some of the points he makes, and hope others will, too.

National Emergency

It appears as if Trump is going to declare a National Emergency to get his wall. I'm confident that the courts will rule this does not constitute an emergency.

Trump and the GOP are being shortsighted if they allow this opening of Pandora's box where POTUS can declare what he pleases as an emergency. What's to stop future President's from banning guns based on its an emergency health crisis or environmental laws based on global warming constitutes an "emergency.

Microdosing hallucinogenics?

Recently, I have come across several articles about people taking small amounts of LSD and other hallucinogenics for depression and, I believe, chronic pain.

Does anyone have knowledge of this treatment?

Someone here may have pointed me to it, but this New York Times article and graphic tell a convincing story of over 100 contacts with Russians during the Trump campaign. To anyone with eyes to see.

On the site, it’s an interactive chart where you can click on each contact or denial to see specifics.

Trump must be counting on plausible deniability. But the big question is whether it’s plausible that he knew nothing of any of this Russian involvement. Seems like a mountain of at least circumstancial evidence that he knew. We’ll see what Mueller has soon enough.

Simple yet highly effective way to view a complex timeline. I've been wanting to develop something like that for years.

Theists – Give me a reason to believe.

I don’t believe in a god because I can’t think of a single reason why I should (and many reasons why I shouldn’t).

Some kind of evidence would be a good reason to believe, but that doesn’t seem to be possible, so what other reason(s) is their to believe in a god (serious question)?

Math Puzzle: What does this list of numbers and letters represent?

This is a list of values I had generated, while preparing some... "mathematically interesting"... material for my upcoming birthday party. (I was born on March 10, 1977.)

The first person to figure out what it is gets a "prize" of some sort.

Amazon not building in NYC

Looks like the Everything Store is backing out of its agreement to open a HQ in NYC.

In a statement released by Amazon

Quote:

While polls show that 70% of New Yorkers support our plans and investment, a number of state and local politicians have made it clear that they oppose our presence and will not work with us to build the type of relationships that are required to go forward with the project we and many others envisioned in Long Island City.
They also made sure to thank their suckers...err supporters... NYC Mayor Bill DeBlasio and governor Amazon Cuomo. I am thrilled this is embarrassing them both.

I'm all for bringing major corporate HQs but not with billions in tax breaks that don't pay for themselves as well as Amazon's well documented history of awful labor practices.

Airbus scraps A380 superjumbo jet as sales slump

Airbus scraps A380 superjumbo jet as sales slump

Quote:

European aircraft manufacturer Airbus has pulled the plug on its struggling A380 superjumbo, which entered service just 12 years ago.

Airbus said last deliveries of the world's largest passenger aircraft, which cost about $25bn (£19.4bn) to develop, would be made in 2021.
This is not a huge surprise, but I still a little bit surprised. I knew the 380 production was in jeopardy, but I figured that Airbus had enough political leverage within the EU to get the EU member nations to apply some political pressure to get some outside nations to buy a few more. After all, these big aircraft are prestige items, and these big aircraft corporations are almost quasi-national in the scope of the contracts they have with governments.

Meanwhile, the 747 production line manages to keep limping along, but only because the 747 is better suited for cargo.
