9th Circuit Court Blocks San Francisco Warning On Soda Ads

https://sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com/20...circuit-court/

A federal appeals court on Thursday blocked a San Francisco law requiring health warnings on advertisements for soda and other sugary drinks in a victory for beverage and retail groups that sued to block the ordinance.

The law violates constitutionally protected commercial speech, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said in a unanimous ruling.

Are the personal motivations of philosophers out of bounds?

It was put to me recently (by a philosophy professor) that it is bad practice to question the motives of philosophers putting "unpopular" arguments.

He had in mind Roger Scruton and his "Gay Reservations" essay, or Richard Swinburne in his "argument" that homosexuality is a disability and ought to be cured, even if the person did not wish to be cured.

This philosopher's point is that we should focus entirely on the argument as we should with any philosopher.

I am somewhat in favour of this approach, I don't want to give the impression that I am afraid of the arguments being put by these people.

And, especially as these arguments are so comically inept, we should shine a light on them and say "Here is the very best case that the intellectual conservative tradition has against gay rights - such as it is".

But I am somewhat puzzled at the idea that Scruton and Swinburne should not be considered in their political context, to have the suggestion made that they might simply be prejudiced.

After all, perhaps it is the most charitable interpretation for why clever people present such bad arguments, that they are simply suffering from a common human failing that probably affects us all in some way.

Resolved: Jeremy Clarkson still a ****

Jeremy Clarkson accused of 'repulsive' homophobia over jokes about Sydney Jeep drivers

Quote:

Jeremy Clarkson and his former Top Gear co-hosts have been accused of making "repulsive" homophobic jokes on their new television series.

Clarkson has denied knowledge of any homophobic jokes on Twitter
British singer-songwriter and actor Will Young outlined his anger at the remarks made by the cast of The Grand Tour in a string of posts on Twitter, stating "you can be honest and funny without this ridiculous 'lad' ooh being gay and let's laugh about it mentality."

One of the remarks in question features Clarkson describing the Jeep Wrangler as being "bought by people who like cruising the streets of San Francisco and Key West and Brighton and Sydney".

Young, who was a guest on Top Gear, described the comments about the supposed sexuality of Jeep Wrangler drivers made on a recent episode of the program as "bigoted", "pathetic" and "homophobic".

He described the cast — which also features fellow former Top Gear co-hosts James May and Richard Hammond — as "obtuse, bigoted, immature babies of men".

Poll: Which nation currently has the most #$%@ed up politics?

America: We Yanks have Donald Trump. Investigation, prosecution of multiple associates of the President, regular lying, revolving staff doors. Government shutdown, wall that is not a wall. We're a mess.

Great Britain: Brexit "We're totally not going to leave without a negotiated agreement in place but won't actually negotiate an agreement that gets accepted by the British public or the EU, and we totally that the "Will of the people" means doing something that the majority no longer want to do."

Belgium: Somehow still exists as a nation, much to the consternation of many American conservatives (George Will has spent decades predicting the immanent demise of Belgium). I'm not fully up to speed on that, but it has it's own thread. Belgian Government Falls.

Venezuela: Hyperinflation, many nations not recognizing Maduro any longer. Mass weight loss due to food shortages. Educated people leaving in droves as refugees.

France: Yellow vest protests shutting things down. Unfortunate tolerance of antisemitism amongst the protesters.

Any others?

ETA: I started this thread because every time I think that the current state of American politics couldn't get much worse, I just open the Brexit thread and find out that the UK is even worse off right now. It's like we are in a rivalry to have the most disastrous and ineffectual political situations.

In a powerful talk, educator Eldra Jackson III shares how he unlearned dangerous lessons about masculinity through Inside Circle, an organization that leads group therapy for incarcerated men. Now he's helping others heal by creating a new image of what it means to be a whole, healthy man. "The challenge is to eradicate this cycle of emotional illiteracy and groupthink," he says.

Blackface in Phoenix Restaurant?

Count on the always ready to be offended:

Quote:

A few weeks ago, I attended a holiday party at a downtown Phoenix restaurant. I walked around to view the photographs on the wall.

Then a photograph caught my attention.

Friends said, “It’s coal miners at a pub after work.” It was a photograph of coal miners with blackened faces. I asked a Latinx and white woman for their opinion. They said it looked like coal miners at a pub after work. Then they stepped back, frowned and said it’s men in blackface.
If you look at the photo in question, it is obviously of coal miners at a pub after work. There's a better quality image here.

horrifying attack on Jussie Smollett

Surprised there isn't a thread on this yet. Star of the hit show Empire, Jussie Smollett, was apparently attacked last night. And, if the reporting our right now is true, it sure does seem like a hate crime.

He is both black and gay. Not shy about it. A week ago he got some threatening letter is the mail, which had MAGA written across them. It would seem a stretch that they are related at this time but I'm sure authorities are looking into it. As it stands he was outside a Subway when two men attacked him, breaking a rib and battering his face while, reportedly, yelling homophobic and racist slurs. Reportedly bleach (odd) was poured on him and a rope tied around his neck. Some say it was a real noose but...a rope at least.

TMZ has a report that someone yelled "this is MAGA country" but Chicago PD dispute it. Not that I necessarily trust Chicago PD but we will see what happens.

Anyhow a prominent black gay man was hugely manhandled and I'm somewhat shocked there isn't more coverage of it today.

Signing pledge not to boycott Israel & yes, Rubio is that ignorant about free speech

Both topics are related so the thread is to discuss either.

A bunch of state governments thought it would be a great idea to require contractors doing business with the state to sign a pledge not to join the boycott of Israel (the same way South Africa was boycotted to end Apartheid).

It's a no-brainer violation of the First Amendment, the government suppressing free speech, and has been found so by the courts. Not all of these no-boycott pledge laws have been ended.

Now comes Rubio (think he wants jewish money for his next POTUS run?) trying to introduce federal legislation allowing this practice. His rationale: the citizen has a free speech right to boycott and the government should have the free speech right to counter-protest.

Yes folks Rubio is that stupid.

Times of Israel: Progressive groups rage against Rubio’s anti-BDS bill
Quote:

As US senator tries to push through legislation during shutdown, J Street and ACLU cast bill as ‘outrageous’ and unconstitutional...

WASHINGTON — Progressive advocacy groups have railed against an attempt by US senators to push through a bill that would protect states that penalize Israel boycotters, with one Jewish organization labeling it a “farce.”

Florida Senator Marco Rubio and Idaho Senator James Risch, both Republicans, introduced the first bill last week to be considered in the GOP-controlled Senate, which combined several bills that died in the last Congress.
Quote:

“The legislation, like the unconstitutional state anti-boycott laws it condones, sends a message to Americans that they will be penalized if they dare to disagree with their government,” said ACLU Senior Legislative Counsel Kathleen Ruane. “We therefore urge senators to vote no on the Combatting BDS Act next week.”

More than 25 states have passed measures that target BDS adherents. Those laws have already been challenged in the courts. In September, an Arizona judge ruled that the state’s law that required state contractors to certify that they are not participating in boycotts of Israel didn’t hold constitutional muster.
Combined with the Trump/GOP government, this stuff is a tad scary.

Serving in an Argentinian restaurant in New Jersy while being of Spanish descent....

New York Times: Couple left anti-immigration note on bill after dining at Argentine eatery

"A couple who dined at a New Jersey restaurant left a hateful message for their multilingual Spanish server scrawled on the back of their bill saying, “Don’t Tip Immigrants!!!,” according to the eatery’s owner.

Santiago Orosco, owner of the Under the Moon Cafe in the Burlington County city of Bordentown, recounted the incident over the weekend in a lengthy Facebook post.

Orosco claimed that on Thursday, a couple “in their mid to late 40’s” dined at the Argentinian eatery and even “raved about the food, the décor, and the service.”

“Upon arrival they seemed very excited about dining at Under the Moon, complementing the ambiance, as well as all the recommendations that our server had made,” Orosco wrote.

After the couple’s meal, the server “grabbed the check from the table, told the customers, goodnight and thanked them as they were leaving,” according to Orosco.

“While our server was closing out for the evening and reconciling sales receipts, she noticed that these customers had written a note on the back of their bill stating, ‘DON’T TIP IMMIGRANTS,’” Orosco said. “I can only assume that they heard our American multi-lingual server speak Spanish to another employee.” "

Howard Schultz Threatens 3rd Party Run

Which could throw a monkey wrench into the Democrats plan to nominate a hard line liberal.

Quote:

Howard Schultz, the former chief executive of Starbucks and a self-described “lifelong Democrat,” said Sunday he was preparing to run for president as an independent and had already begun the groundwork required to be on the ballot in all 50 states.

Mr. Schultz, in an interview with The New York Times, said he planned to crisscross the country for the next three months as part of a book tour before deciding whether to enter the race. A billionaire, Mr. Schultz would face a difficult road despite his considerable wealth: Few independent candidates have mounted successful challenges for the White House.
I don't know why they say "Few" when they mean "No." It's true that a few independent candidates have gotten a significant amount of votes, but none of them have actually been successful in the sense of winning.

OK, some FBI profilers weighed in. The family interviewed. We learned that people heard "the victim" pull her car up to her house, followed by the sounds of a scuffle and muffled cries. Being in a rural, wooded area, she was never located.

Then - the Psychic weighs in! The woman psychic, with all of the lies about helping LE, and looking out of Central Casting, gave her "psychic visions".

Black Holes episode VII: The Schwarz Awakens ;)

So, if I understand the black hole universe hypothesis correctly -- which is probably not the case -- the idea is that basically matter that when a black hole forms, the matter going into the singularity from the right side of the diagram, goes right through the Einstein-Rosen bridge at the centre and out the left side of it, as a new universe. More or less, anyway. Plus some torsion and bouncing and stuff.

Well, I can sort of follow, for the one time collapse that formed the black hole. Thing is, that's not the end of the story, is it? My question, and I hope some of the more knowledgeable members will enlighten me, is: so, when more matter falls into the black hole, exactly where does it appear in that pocket universe?

Basically it seems to me like if I'm in that pocket universe, I should be able to tell that that's the case by the fact that more matter comes in through that wormhole. Stuff falls into the black hole in the parent universe, it should come through that bridge to my universe, innit?

But where does that wormhole even connect to my universe, anyway? It seems to me like it should be basically everywhere, if I understand it correctly. Does everything just appear to be back in time at the big bang moment, or how does that work?

Question on Conservative Mindset

I came upon an interesting quote in the book Becoming Nicole by Amy Ellis Nutt. This book is about a transgendered (M to F) child. When the child, Nicole, was in 5th grade, the parent of another child became aware of Nicole being transgendered and objected forcefully to Nicole using the female bathroom while having been born male.

The parent was quoted as saying he "felt as if his rights were being infringed upon every time his country invented new ones for special interest groups". Specifically, this person had fought against gay marriage for this reason.

I am politically and socially liberal (which I am presuming is relevant, but please correct me if it is not), and I don't understand how giving rights to one person impacts my rights. For instance, as a straight woman, I cannot see how giving gay people the right to get married impacts me. It doesn't remove my right to get married.

Could anyone explain this? Having read it, I am coming to see how a mindset like this would support anti-LGBTQ actions. what I am asking is, could you explain why you would see things this way? What is being taken away from you? thank you.

FREEDOM

“It is stupid, terribly stupid, to choose intellectual demons so that, sitting in the chair of power, they can have the luxury of governing us.

It is the height of absurdity to give someone the knife to cut our throat; and that, precisely that, is what we are doing.

Unfortunately we have been really stupid to have been taken in by the beautiful speeches and the pretty promises of the deceptive and cunning politicians.

We ourselves have raised our bad governments, each individual is guilty of electing the tyrants.

The day will come when governments will no longer be needed, but now they are needed because we still do not know how to govern ourselves individually. When each individual is a government, when each one of us knows how to govern himself, we will no longer need anyone to govern us, then we will be free.” (SAMAEL AUN WEOR)

(VERY) BASIC ORIENTATION

There is no doubt that at the present moment in humanity’s history true democracy does not exist. Of course there are those who claim to represent the will of the people, we are even given a vote in order that we continue believing in the charade. It is true that we don’t (yet) live in total tyranny, in the West there is generally still a degree of freedom, we aren’t (yet) being herded off to internment camps for questioning the wisdom of those who govern us. There’s a lot of social stigma attached to holding non-mainstream beliefs, to questioning the ideals of the brainwashed masses (and we are all part of the masses, and all of us are to some extent brainwashed ourselves) but still there is some semblance of freedom of speech.

What though is freedom of speech without freedom of belief? Do we believe what we want to believe, or what we are told to believe (overtly or with subtlety)? Unfortunately we have to face the sad reality that we are being brainwashed, that for the most part we see the things they want us to see. Anyone with any sense knows that the mainstream media is a joke, whether it’s supposedly left wing or right wing it follows and serves the agenda of the powerful. The alternative media? Perhaps it tends to comes closer to the truth, but if there’s useful knowledge in it, there’s also a lot of useless noise. Really until we free ourselves, spiritually and mentally, we are not free and nor will we be able to discriminate between fact and fiction. Until then we will be stuck in the vicious circle of our own Dualistic thinking, which can never really resolve problems.

For a very basic example of this Dualism, the Americans have the choice between Republicans and Democrats, what kind of choice is this? On one side the cruelty of economic injustice and tax breaks for the corporations, on the other licentiousness and abortion. This is not a genuine choice, true democracy…

TRUE DEMOCRACY

“Democracy cannot be framed within a rigid mold. DEMOCRACY cannot be bottled. Democracy must flow freely with the gentle flow of Thought.

We must point out that until now in Latin America, democracy is only a yearning, a hope, an ideal and nothing else.”

Bringing about “authentic and legitimate democracy” is the goal of the spiritual teacher SAMAEL AUN WEOR in his two books “THE SOCIAL CHRIST” and “THE SOCIAL TRANSFORMATION OF HUMANITY”. These books were written in 1964 and 1965 respectively, some time ago, so of course they are not completely current in all respects. Nonetheless they are filled with illuminating insights equally applicable to the present global situation as to the times in which they were written. Despite the majority of Samael’s work having been translated into English some time ago, these books were not until very recently. Unfortunately those practising the teachings of Samael seem to consider them spurious, useless or even harmful, and so they were ignored.

‘SPIRITUALLY AWAKENED’ PEOPLE

Samael founded a political party called POSCLA (“Christian Socialist Party Of Latin America”) and these books contain references to this political party. He later disbanded this party, which leads some to believe that he was not in favour of political action. But in fact, in the last year of his life, he reaffirmed his support for the principles laid out in the books. As the popular saying goes, don’t “throw the baby out with the bath water”.

We should not really be surprised. People who claim to be ‘spiritually awakened’ are often adverse to political truths, they prefer only to attain states of bliss in meditation, a state of comfortable apathy, not to experience the discomfort of facing up to the harsh realities of life for so many of the people of this planet. Harsh realities for all of us, in fact, because even if we are rich our lives are more joyless and grey than they would be in a less tyrannical world.

Some ‘spiritually awakened’ people even work for the very Corporations which Samael, with vehemence, labels as instruments of the powers of darkness. Of course anyone with political consciousness doesn’t need him to tell them that...

SPIRITUALITY AND POLITICS

Spirituality and Politics are two poles of the same thing, says Samael. One without the other is incomplete. Indeed he referred to his teaching as REVOLUTIONARY GNOSTICISM. A non-violent revolution, a spiritual revolution, but a revolution nonetheless.

Life, he says, is an integral whole, which must be understood in it’s wholeness rather than just from one side. Really this should be self-evident, for example a Buddhist can talk about Compassion, or a Christian about “following the Christ”, but if this doesn’t include freeing humanity from the suffering of oppression is this really Compassion or Christ-like love?

(At this moment it is worth pointing out that Samael drew no distinctions between “true” and “false” religions, he believed that all of them contained the same basic eternal principles, even if these principles are no longer practised by the “believers” today. He called his political party the “Christian Socialist Party of Latin America” but said it could just as well be called “Buddhist” or by the name of any other religion.)

PROBLEMS AND SOLUTIONS

Abandoned children on the streets of Latin American cities. People who can’t afford a stall at the market denied the right to sell their produce on the street. The legitimized banditry of customs duties. Religions building so many opulent temples when they could invest the money in providing shelter for the homeless. Latin America under the boot heel of the USA, the need for industrialization and self-sufficiency. Workers not being given a share of the profits of the company when by rights it belongs to all of them. Lands not being distributed to the people, unemployed wandering the streets of the cities when hands are needed to produce food. Workers failing to use the weapons of general strikes and slowdowns, not uniting to cast off oppression.

Solutions to such problems as these, and many others, are dealt with in the books.

THE INDIVIDUAL IS SOCIETY

“THE SOCIAL CHRIST” and “THE SOCIAL TRANSFORMATION OF HUMANITY” emphasize that we must deal with our own wickedness, our own ego(s), the demonic qualities in each of us. Society is a collection of individuals and hence, what the individual is, the society is. Samael gives the example of a country he visited which was ruled by a tyrannical dictator. He discovered that in the homes of the people of that country, men were dictators over their own families, over their wives and children.
Samael wrote about the necessity of individual change in all of his books, it is one of the key points of his teaching that one must overcome the ego(s). Nonetheless this does not exclude what the introduction to “THE SOCIAL TRANSFORMATION OF HUMANITY” calls “The revolution against the collective ego of the powerful”.

THE TWO MONSTERS

“LATIN AMERICA is a beautiful girl who walks the path of life, but two horrible MONSTERS lurk in the depth of the forest…, the names of those two Monsters are: CAPITALISM and COMMUNISM.”

Samael’s work truly strives towards what Buddha called “The Middle Way”. Neither Capitalism nor Communism (nor dictatorship) can resolve the human social problem. Private Capital is an injustice against the workers and State Capital is also injustice, we must avoid either extreme.

Only the spiritual person is truly revolutionary, and true economic and social Justice can only be attained by Spiritual Socialism.

CAPITALISM

“Money is like manure: it is not good unless it is spread. DISTRIBUTIVE JUSTICE can save America from falling into the Feline Claws of Communism.”

Of course it is much easier for many people to hear criticism of Communism than Capitalism, because Capitalism’s true face is invisible to the well-off of the Occident. The Western countries are very opulent and the suffering they create for the rest of the world with their “free market” (corporate monopolization), IMF, WTO etc., is not directly visible and thus easily ignored or rationalised. The people say: “it’s a shame, but Capitalism will eventually make it all better” or “equality is not a good thing” (often confusing Distributive Justice with the lack of any kind of hierarchy).

In truth, the workers should be owners of the means of production, not some distant capitalist. Small businesses should be aided and monopolies prohibited. The Corporations should not control governments through their economic might and lower the quality of life of Latin Americans just for the profit of shareholders. Nobody should own thousands of hectares of land, land should be distributed among those who are willing to work it. Samael says:

“There is lots of money, the problem is that it is badly distributed and on the doorstep of the rich unhappy people weep.

Today credit is only for the powerful and in this way the saying ‘To he that has a horse they give a horse and to he that does not have a horse they give a kick’ is fulfilled.”

(AND THE USA...)

We cannot discuss Capitalism without briefly discussing the major Capitalist-Plutocratic power, the USA…

These days it seems that people judge one to be a sort of heretic or heathen when one speaks about the flaws of the Neo-Liberal (“Free Market”, essentially) economic system, which has been imposed around the world, with or without bloodshed, by the economists of the United States. Nor is it easy to make people understand the many terrible things the Colossus of the North has done, bizarrely even people of other countries seem to be patriotic about the USA! An example of America’s crimes is given by Samael:

“However the doctrine of HITLER is not the Doctrine of the entire GERMAN PEOPLE. Really in Germany THERE IS a lot of COMPREHENSION and if they were cruel in the war, the NORTH AMERICANS OF THE UNITED STATES were worse.

Terrible things were seen on the battlefields, when the North Americans understood that they were powerless against the GERMAN courage, they then dedicated themselves to bombarding defenceless cities and killing the elderly, women and children.

The German soldiers were demoralized many times when they understood that their wives and children were being murdered miserably while they were fighting with the enemy in the BATTLEFIELD.

There is no doubt that avoiding the battlefield to commit murder of women and children is cowardice of the worst kind.”

Though Samael doesn’t go into further detail, one would imagine that he is talking about events such as the bombings of Dresden and Hamburg. Nor does he go into the other atrocities, wars etc., of the USA, when in fact the North American power did similar things in Japan, firebombing the cities - Tokyo was the most lethal bombing raid in history, nuclear or conventional. It is even said that before Hiroshima and Nagasaki the Japanese had already offered to surrender, the Americans dropped the bombs just for the sake of experiment then accepted the same conditions of surrender that the Japanese had already offered. Not to mention the things which have happened in Vietnam, in Iraq and Afghanistan, wars the USA made for the sake of resources such as oil or to try to lord it over other parts of the world and assert it’s empire status. The civilian casualties in these conflicts number in the millions, and the USA often acted with great cruelty, such as burning the soil of agricultural lands to render them infertile.

Samael does mention the manipulations and puppet governments in Latin America, the Corporations robbing the people etc., these being of relevance in books which are fundamentally about LATIN AMERICA, about Latin American problems, not those of Europe or the East. As one of the books says: “The New Culture will be synthetic and Latin America, with its Christian Socialism which is essentially Latin American, will fulfil in the world a mission of synthesis”.

It will be hard for many of the United States’ people to face up to this, but when we look without prejudice we see that the American Capitalist superpower is truly oppressive and inhuman.

COMMUNISM

A well-known joke goes “Capitalism is the exploitation of man by man, Communism is its’ opposite”.

Communism in fact is worse because it takes away all religious freedom. It goes even further than Capitalism in indoctrinating the people and the youth and engages in all kinds of brutality.

Samael devotes a lot of space, particularly in “THE SOCIAL CHRIST”, to debunking Marxism-Leninism, the theory of Historical Materialism. He offers a philosophical critique of Marx, dealing with Marx’s ignorance of Metaphysics for example.

Communism is a thing to be dreaded, yet it’s cause is the cruelties of Capitalism and it can only be combatted by true Social Justice:

“...the masters of CAPITAL prepare the ground and fertilize it so that the ABOMINABLE FLOWER of COMMUNISM will germinate in it.”

“TO THE BATTLEFIELD”

These two books take up the challenge of demonstrating to people the injustices of the present system, what a Socially Just world might look like, and even how we might achieve it. Admittedly they are works from the past, times have changed since the 1960’s. Nonetheless they provide a solid political orientation, offering much insight into many problems.

Any sincere person reading this literature is bound to find useful and interesting ideas. The profound social consciousness of Samael, his comprehension of the dangers of this moment in human history, his original solutions to problems. He is not simply an intellectual intoxicated by a theory or doctrine, his solutions come from a wisdom beyond intellectualism, calling for “a new age in the august thunder of thought”.

We invite you to read the books, to explore for yourself these terrains of consciousness and ideas.

A FINAL NOTE

Though the books deal slightly more with criticising Communism than with other systems, we must recognise that now the Soviet Union is fallen. At present the Colossus of the North (the USA) is in most ways the country posing the greatest threat to humanity. The UN also has a sinister agenda, also leads us to tyranny. They use things like climate change and terrorism to justify the progressive creation of an all-powerful police state, with such subtlety that the masses, distracted by decadent popular culture and the simple business of surviving, don’t notice. Thus they lead humanity towards a New World Order, One World Government, a (Communist, Fascist, Capitalist-Plutocratic) society of total technological control of the population.

This is beyond the scope of this article, and furthermore an obsession with conspiracy theories, some of which are certainly untrue or exaggerated, can sometimes obscure more basic political facts. Some people love to talk about the Illuminati, but they don’t speak so much about Imperialism…

So we will finish by saying, it is important to seek the essential of what is written, not to consider the contextual as absolute or vice versa. These books will prove very valuable to you if you do so, if you meditate. As Samael says in “THE SOCIAL TRANSFORMATION OF HUMANITY”:

“THE TRUTH is not something still, STATIC, the TRUTH is the unknown from MOMENT to MOMENT.”

Darrow’s Statue

Not sure this is the right sub forum for this, but wasn’t sure where to post. I had heard a little over a year or so ago that he had finally been placed on the lawn of the Rhea County Courthouse just across the way from WJ Bryan.

Had never been to the site, which is a little sad as a lifelong skeptic and Tennessean. But I had a little work to do in the area yesterday and figured I’d swing by to get a look. Was a little too late to run through the museum it turned out. But anyway I found a parking spot nearby, hopped out of the car and there he was.

Here’s a little more info on the topic.

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/07/14/u...s-statues.html

Didn’t notice any vandalism whatsoever. Only quibble is that apparently, due to the presence of a large light at his feet, Bryan is illuminated at night while Darrow remains in the dark.

Women's March in Humboldt County, California Cancelled For Being Too White

Never really thought a women's march had anything to do with the colour of women's skin but apparently it does and apparently they need more input from other genders too, which seems really strange.

Humboldt County is 74% non-Hispanic white. One would think the organisers, and march, would be overwhelmingly white too.

“We failed to have the type of collaboration needed to be inclusive of some of the most underrepresented voices in our community, namely, women of color and people who are gender non-conforming,”

Measles outbreak WA/OR

It was only a matter of time, WA has a large share of the anti-vaxxers. We have vaccination rates ~90% or lower.

Someone was exposed at an airport I believe, down in Vancouver, WA and the Portland area. There are now 30 cases in that area. There are 9 more suspected cases.

One person exposed there was from King County. And guess what? He went to two high school football games while he was in his contagious window.

Many of those unvaccinated teens are going to be in classes at three area high schools in the next three weeks when if they were infected it will be before their symptoms show.

PHD News Alert.
Quote:

Locations of potential exposure to measles in King County

Before he was diagnosed with measles, the infected individual was in the following public locations. These times include the period when the person was at the location and two hours after. Measles virus can remain in the air for up to two hours after someone infectious with measles leaves the area. Anyone who was at the following locations during the times listed could have been exposed to measles:

Date Time Location

Jan. 9, 2019 7:00am-6:00pm Lease Crutcher Lewis Boeing 17-88 Construction Site 2400 Perimeter Rd, Auburn WA, 98001

Jan. 10, 2019 7:00am-6:00pm Lease Crutcher Lewis Boeing 17-88 Construction Site 2400 Perimeter Rd, Auburn WA, 98001

Jan. 10, 2019 6:30pm-10:30pm Mt Rainier High School vs Kentlake High School basketball game at Kentlake High School 21401 SE Falcon Way, Kent, WA 98042

Jan. 11, 2019 7:00am-2:00pm Lease Crutcher Lewis Boeing 17-88 Construction Site 2400 Perimeter Rd, Auburn WA, 98001

Jan. 12, 2019 6:30pm-10:30pm Kent Lake High School vs. Tahoma High School basketball game at Kentlake High School 21401 SE Falcon Way, Kent, WA 98042

Jan. 14, 2019 9:55am-12:45pm Valley Medical Center, Covington Urgent Care 27500 168th Pl SE, Covington, WA 98042

Jan. 16, 2019 10:00am-12:15pm Multicare Covington Hospital Emergency Dept. 17700 SE 272nd St, Covington, WA 98042

If you were at the locations at the times listed above and are not immune to measles, the most likely time you would become sick is between January 16 and February 6, 2019.
Re that highlighted part, it means that kids in classes could infect their class and the class that follows, probably also the lunch area and halls. And those infected will keep exposing people until possibly all of the unvaccinated kids get infected.

Re the unvaccinated kids, they will be furloughed from school until they are vaccinated but there is no guarantee they'll stay out of public places.

Anyone want to start a poll on how many total cases there are going to be before this is over? Maybe 5% of three high schools?

Facebook's "Friendly Fraud" Against Children

This story looks pretty bad:

Quote:

Facebook made a decision. Company policy was to tell game developers to let children spend money without their parents’ permission, according to an internal memo circulated within the company.

The memo stated, “Friendly Fraud – what it is, why it’s challenging, and why you shouldn’t try to block it.” “Friendly fraud” is the term Facebook used when children spent money on games without their parent’s permission.
The details are pretty shocking. One underaged girl disputed her charges:

Quote:

Gillian: It’s $6,545 – but card was just added on Sept. 2. They are disputing all of it I believe. That user looks underage as well. Well, maybe not under 13.

Michael: Is the user writing in a parent, or is this user a 13ish year old

Gillian: It’s a 13ish yr old. says its 15. looks a bit younger. she* not its. Lol.

Michael: … I wouldn’t refund
Note the part about how the card was just added Sept 2. The two Facebook employees were discussing this on September 19. So an underaged girl (whether she was under 13 or not) rang up over $6,000 in charges related to a game in about 2 weeks, and Facebook decided not to refund the money?

Dumbest Suggestion for handling the Shutdown

I think we need a thread about the dumbest suggestion on how government employees should handle the shutdown.

So far, we've seen various ideas floated by Trump and/or members of his administration... take out a mortgage, get free food, etc. We've also seen people suggest they should be happy to sacrifice themselves. For the most part, those suggestions show how out of touch Trump and his minions are regarding how the average person lives.

So what do people think is the dumbest idea that's been floated?

Documents reveal Facebook engaged in "Friendly Fraud"

https://www.revealnews.org/article/f...-out-of-money/

Quote:

Facebook orchestrated a multi-year effort that duped children and their parents out of money, in some cases hundreds or even thousands of dollars, and then often refused to give the money back, according to court documents unsealed tonight in response to a Reveal legal action.

[...]

Facebook encouraged game developers to let children spend money without their parents’ permission – something the social media giant called “friendly fraud” – in an effort to maximize revenues, according to a document detailing the company’s game strategy.

Sometimes the children did not even know they were spending money, according to another internal Facebook report. Facebook employees knew this. Their own reports showed underage users did not realize their parent’s credit cards were connected to their Facebook accounts and they were spending real money in the games, according to the unsealed documents.
It gets worse as you read on.

alphaStar beats pro Starcraft 2 players

The next game tackled by the Deep Blue machine learning team is Starcraft 2.

They did a live stream showing replays of a few of the matches that you can see over on Youtube, with caster play by play commentary.

The first set of 5 games, against LiquidTLO, were won 5-0 by alphaStar. The AI can currently only play Protoss vs Protoss matchups. And TLO is not a Protoss player.

They then brought in a pro player who is a Protoss player, but he also was swept 5-0 by alphaStar. That was LiquidMana, who in 2018 finished ranked #13 among Protoss players in WCS points.

It is very interesting to see what limitations, and advantages are programmed into alphaStar.

At the end of the video, there is a 1 game show match with LiquidMana, and he wins against a modified version of alphaStar that was given one additional limitation to better imitate how humans play.

The Deep Mind team plans to go forward with having the AI learn how to play any matchup involving all 3 races in the game: Protoss, Terran and Zerg.

One for the Aussies: Capt Flinders' remains found.

One of the legacies of the construction of the new high speed rail link from London to Birmingham will be that the coffin containing the remains of Captain Flinders, the first person to circumnavigate Australia and after whom half of Australia seems to have been named, has been found during excavations at Euston Station.

The coffin was clearly marked with a lead plate bearing an inscription, so there is no doubt. The graveyard was built over, and all the headstones lost, during expansion of the station in the 19th century. Archaeologists will be removing over 60,000 burials from that one site!

Free Will Argument For God

Tell me what you think of the following argument for God.

1. There are three ways that events come about in the world: free will, determinism and indeterminism.

2. The universe came into existence.

3.The coming into existence of the universe is an event.

4. The coming into existence of the universe can not be due to determinism. (This is because every deterministic event requires a prior event to bring it about and that event requires another event and so on to infinity. A deterministic system can not just initiate action out of nowhere or from a state of rest.)

5. The coming into existence of the universe can't be due to indeterminism (Since the macroscopic world is largely deterministic rather than indeterministic, what I'm referring to with this premise is the quantum or sub-atomic world. The reason the quantum world can not be indeterministic is because indeterminacy is incoherent and incoherent things can not exist. This turns quantum indeterminacy into determinism since it has causes rather than not having causes and since determinacy has already been ruled out as causing the universe, so too is the option of the universe beginning from quantum mechanical events ruled out.)

6. Therefore, the universe must have been brought into being through an act of free-will.(This is because there are only three ways events can happen and because determinism and determinism are insufficient, the only other thing that can bring the world into existence is free will. Free will works because it avoids the problem of determinacy (always needing prior events) by being able to begin a chain of events without needing a prior event.)

7. Only beings have free will. (Free will requires a mind in order to judge various options and choose)

8. Therefore, a being is responsible for the universe. (Since this description matches the idea of God, we can call this being God. But if not God then simply the creator of the universe.)

ZORB - Protect yourself from Harmful EMFs

In light of 5G rollout, many are concerned about the often seldom discussed healh effects from EMF's. There are several products out there on the market that claim to offer protection from EMFs like cellphones and other wireless devices.

Zorb is a sticker that you put on your phone and supposedly absorbs the harmful emfs.

Is Zorb Verified by a Third Party?
Yes. The Zorb technology is proven in third-party independent labs, certified by the FCC. These are the same labs that test the mobile devices themselves for FCC regulatory compliance.

Is Toxic Femininity a Thing?

Here's the first hit on my Google (it contains a "TRIGGER WARNING"):

http://geekfeminism.wikia.com/wiki/Toxic_femininity

Quote:

Toxic femininity is a term used by Men's rights advocacy activists to construct a False equivalence between Toxic masculinity... There is no such thing as toxic femininity, but Benevolent sexism is a way in which superficially positive beliefs about women harm women and sometimes make it possible for individual women to get away with bad behavior, and Sexism covers the most common ways in which expectations of conventional femininity harm women...

While abuse by women aimed at adult men exists, it's exceedingly rare and when it isn't actually self-defense being mischaracterized as an abuse, it happens individualistically, not as part of a patriarchal pattern of political violence. Abuse by women aimed at children is much more common, but the roots of that abuse are also in patriarchy, not femininity. Child abuse is a way in which women can actively participate in supporting patriarchal structure, and Internalized sexism means that women, as well as men, will continue to abuse children as long as patriarchy continues.
OK, that sounds totally fair. I was listening to my NPR affiliate today, and they were discussing toxic masculinity. One guest wanted to steer conversation off-topic to "toxic femininity." I cannot recall his exact definition, but he mentioned women being "manipulative."

My second hit was Bust, which said:

Quote:

If you ask a man about toxic femininity, get ready to hear about alllllll the ladies who couldn’t see what a nice guy he was, and possibly some ******* [effing] disturbing accusations of greediness, stupidity, and shallow ***** [bitchy but with a c] whoreishness from said nice guy.
https://bust.com/feminism/195520-toxic-femininity.html

It's not clear to me that it's necessary to have a term like toxic femininity. Toxic masculinity -- I'm willing to accept that as a thing. Benevolent sexism? Sure, that's real. I think critics of feminism are groping for a term more like "female privilege," or "female entitlement." But those terms have been around for a long, long time.

Bikini Hiker Dies After Fall

Gigi Wu, Taiwanese 'bikini hiker,' dies after mountain fall
https://www.cnn.com/2019/01/22/asia/...ntl/index.html
Quote:

Gigi Wu, a Taiwanese internet star famous for hiking mountains, has been found dead after falling into a gorge 30 meters deep (100 feet), the island's state media reported.
Wu, 36, fell from Taiwan's Jupen Mountain on Saturday and was found on Monday.
Capt. Chang Ching-piao of the Nantou County Government Fire Station told CNN that Wu called a friend for assistance after the fall, but was unable to move due to injuries to her lower body.
Because of the late time of day, six rescuers from the fire department began the search the following morning. A helicopter was deployed in the search, but was unable to land where Wu fell.
It seems she lost a bet some years ago and had to pose in a bikini after her hike.

No poll, just free-form it.

After Trump's impeachment, should Pence then pardon him? Would that appear to be too cynical and continue the divisiveness that has been the hallmark of this administration?

Bonus question, should both be pardoned if they are impeached simultaneously? The dynamic would be different.

Science has been working with Religion as a constant drag on the necessary interchange of findings. As an example I was talking with a very intelligent small town man who goes to church faithfully. He wanted to clear up a question I might have regarding the book of Genesis. He said obviously something was awry with the story of Cain and Abel; that after murdering Abel Cain could not have found a wife in distant land as his people were the first. He gave me a sincere stare and said "Cain had to marry an Ape". I had to work hard on a straight face. That was funny but at least he saw something wrong with the biblical account.

Mnemonic Devices for Easily Confused Words

In this thread, we will post examples of mnemonic devices we use to help remember the difference between two or more words that are easily confused, for one reason or another. It doesn't matter how wacky they are: As long as they help YOU remember stuff.

For example: Entomology vs. Etymology:

Entomology begins with the word "Ent". Ents are creatures in The Lord of the Rings who are giant walking trees, sort of analogous to stick insects. (The fact that ents don't really exist is besides the point.) If you can remember that connection, you can remember that entomology is the study of insects.

Etymology begins with "Ety" which sounds sort of like the web site Etsy. If you look at its HTML source in a browser, you will find it is made up of a bunch of words. Therefore, Etymology studies the sources of words.

MAGA brats mock Native American with "build the wall" chants

Shortly after Trump won the election, and I was busy finding doomsday prep types to start hanging out with, I was with my friend who was getting married soon. He started talking about how he might have kids with his soon to be wife. I told him he was crazy to bring a kid into the world of Trump and that what he should really do is take his existing kid, then age two, deep into the woods and put him down now to spare him the suffering that Trump would soon unleash upon us.

My friend did not like that idea and no longer invites me to his house. But I still think the idea I put forth has merit because a child growing up now will either be a victim of the coming Fourth Reich, die in the following civil war or end up on the side of evil as a young MAGA soldier.

This is a story about kids that have gone to the side of evil and embraced MAGA.

Two days ago there was a rally for forced birth degenerates in Washington DC. That same day some Native Americans decided to have a vigil with songs near the Vietnam Memorial (which is also near the Lincoln Memorial) and some kids from a high school in Kentucky, Covington Catholic, wandered over from the debauchery of the forced birth rally to inflict some misery on the Native Americans.

https://twitter.com/UncededClothing/...10180328722434

They surrounded them. Started chanting "build the wall" and at least one of them got in real close and seemed to try and do a stare down. Thankfully the man, Nathan Philips of the Omaha Tribe (and a Vietnam veteran) chose not to engage with evil that day and just continued his song.

But this is where we are. Trump has so debased our nation and infected our children with his diseased ideas that we now have this brooding SA to inflict misery on anyone they perceive as not white enough to be MAGA. Racism given a wash of acceptability by our Cretin In Chief who, even now, continues to try and get a monument to racism built on the southern border.

It was always obvious that all roads from Trump led to a world less civil and more infused with hate. Here we are.

Massive gas-line explosion, Hidalgo, Mexico

We’ve seen this before; people tapping into gasoline or oil pipelines to steal same, and the resultant tragedies.
This one particularly horrific with at least 66 dead and dozens injured.

I’m not going to link to the video footage, this is strong stuff even for a jaded old cop. Dozens of people literally on fire, running from the scene, heart-rending screaming...

It’s on YouTube if you want.

Much of this activity is simply poor people trying to get fuel for their cars or trying to make a few bucks. But the news says this activity in Mexico is largely “run” by the cartels, who pay people a few bucks for the gas they steal, and then re-sell it on the black market....Undercutting legal gas prices. To the tune of billions per year.

Extreme Skepticism in politics

I get accused of not being skeptical because I apply the highest level of skepticism to US news stories. The standard should be the person making the claim (like the CIA or journalists) to publish all their evidence for peer review. Until such time, we should reject the claim.

Here are the reasons why I support my method

-it is the most effective tool we have for determine truth.

-Not knowing a lot of things is an acceptable position.

-we don't have a need to default to a weaker standard. The prosecutors examining the case do. But for nearly everyone on the forum, it probably won't alter decisions they make.

Why am I doing skepticism wrong?

The physics of bowling

Hi, everyone,

I watched this video and as I don't understand the science very well, I'm not sure if the guy is correct - that a 14 pound bowling ball has more impact on the pins than a 15 or 16 pound ball. If he is right, wouldn't an even lighter ball, say 13 or 12 pounds, work better for the bowler? And surely, there must be a limit how light the ball can go before it loses its effectiveness, right?

I'm a bit embarrassed to say this but I use a 10 pound ball. I'm 65 and not very strong so I find anything heavier than 10 pounds a bit too much to handle. In any case, I'm a spinner, in that I don't hook the ball but spin it (like a helicopter, Taiwanese style) down the lanes. As it would be very hard on the wrist to spin anything heavier than 12 pounds, spinners usually use an 11 pound ball. I average about 178 with my 10 pound ball and I've been wondering if I should switch to an even lighter ball, say 9 pounds.

What do you think? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Test shows dinosaurs survived mass extinction by 700,000 years

Test shows dinosaurs survived mass extinction by 700,000 years

We know birds are dinosaurs and they survived. With the exception of some ectothermic species such as the leatherback sea turtle and crocodiles, it was thought no dinosaurs or even any animals weighing more than 25 kilograms (55 lb) survived.

It's a new dating system though. Can anyone tell about the reliability of this test? Because apparently there is at least one paper confirming the controversial date using more traditional methods.

Evidence of the 'Lost World' -- did dinosaurs survive the end Cretaceous extinctions?

10 years old but still nothing I see regarding a narrative change.

Peeping Tom Gets Worked By Homeowner

In the Great State of Florida, Geoffrey Cassidy was allegedly caught peeping in a window, masturbating while looking in at a teenage girl getting changed. The girl's father, former NFL defensive back Tony Beckham, saw him and chased him down 'had a good conversation with him'. Cassidy was treated for multiple broken bones. Cassidy was arrested and charged. Beckham was not.

So while I am inclined to applaud this, it does smack of vigilantism and revenge beating. Is there some interpretation of Florida law where this 'conversation' was legally justified?

George Soros and the Koch Brother and the CIA are censoring facebook!

Err...too wild to not go in CT's, but I'm not making this up:
I just got a bizarre facebook notification for one of my groups saying:

Quote:

False Rating on Content Shared in Interesting, reasonable people
A member of Interesting, reasonable people shared content that's been rated False by
Factcheck.org."

To fight false news, Facebook pushes misleading content farther down in News Feed and provides additional articles on the same topic.
If a group repeatedly shares false news, Facebook may push all of that group's content down in News Feed, which may mean fewer people visit the group. Facebook may also stop suggesting that people join the group."

About the NED, from Jacobin magazine:
https://jacobinmag.com/2018/03/trump...foreign-policy

Quote:

Simply put, the NED has since its inception been more of a tool for US political interests than an inoffensive vehicle for democracy promotion, an instrument for overtly carrying out the kinds of influence operations the CIA used to carry out covertly.
Quote:

A wary Congress only agreed to create the NED in 1983 on the condition that the CIA not be involved, something then-CIA director William Casey promised, but didn’t follow through on: at the last minute he had language prohibiting the involvement of CIA personnel removed from the bill. The NED also appears to have been Casey’s idea in the first place; he wrote a White House official that he was in favor of a “National Endowment in support of free institutions throughout the world.”

The NED was initially placed under the auspices of the National Security Council and one Walter Raymond, Jr, a CIA propaganda expert who, according to the late Robert Parry, for years acted as liaison between the program and Casey. Raymond also drew charming doodles like this, depicting himself as a literal puppeteer controlling many different strings.

Quote:

The NED walked into controversy early when it crossed paths with the Iran-Contra scandal. For example, Oliver North named his portfolio of covert activities “Project Democracy,” which raised eyebrows because that also happened to be what the NED had been called in its incipient stages. But there was more to it than just the name. Raymond, who oversaw the NED, was a close colleague of North, and part of the White House Working Group on Central America, which helped coordinate pro-Contra projects. Later there emerged a secret 1982 White House memo on the minutes of a cabinet meeting discussing “Project Democracy.” It read: “We need to examine how law and Executive Order can be made more liberal to permit covert action on a broader scale, as well as what we can do through substantially increased overt political action.” All of it suggested that the two programs — one secret, one public — were two sides of the same coin.

Navy Sub Captain Relieved of Command

August 2018 https://www.kitsapsun.com/story/news...ty/1135493002/
Quote:

Cmdr. Travis Zettel, the commanding officer of the fast-attack submarine USS Bremerton, was relieved of his command Monday because of "a loss of confidence in his ability to command," Navy officials said.

The reasons behind his removal are currently under investigation, said Submarine Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet Command spokeswoman Lt. j.g. Michelle Pelissero.
It happens at times.

But this month we find out....
https://www.kitsapsun.com/story/news...es/2553376002/
Quote:

The commander of the USS Bremerton was relieved of duty last summer after admitting to Navy investigators he paid for “female accompaniment” while the boat was in port in the Philippines.

The incident occurred March 1 while the sub was ported in Subic Bay, according to documents released to the Kitsap Sun under a federal Freedom of Information Act request. NCIS agents interviewed a tipster to the Department of Defense Inspector General’s hotline that Zettel had told him and another sailor at a hotel pool that Zettel had “requested/ordered ten girls to arrive at the hotel.” Later, at dinner, the sailor saw Zettel with around 10 “provocatively dressed females outside the front door of the hotel.”
I don't think this would have happened back in the 80's and early 90's. What happened on WestPac stayed on WestPac. Even my 1st commanding officer had that attitude.

But times do change. In mid 90's an officer who was the CO of one of my boats was caught in a affair with another man's wife; he got in big trouble. I was told by a senior officer later on that there was videotape involved.

Total Lunar Eclipse - Afterward Extreme Brightness - Jan 20

A Total Lunar Eclipse can be seen by those with clear skies in the Americas during the evening of Sunday 2019 JAN 20. Many in Europe should be able to witness totality during the predawn hours of Monday 2019 JAN 21.

I’ve calculated that after the Moon leaves the penumbra it will be the brightest Moon since 2001 JAN 09-10 and until 2096 NOV 29-30. This is due to the confluence of the Moon being near Perigee, Perihelion and Ecliptic. Some in the media have been hyping this as a so-called SuperMoon for being near Perigee. But they have been overlooking the Perihelion and Ecliptic factors that will make this Full Moon especially bright when just outside of the Earth’s shadow.

Below is a link to my Moon webpage. It includes a preview graphic for the eclipse as seen against an imaginary blue wall to make the shadow fully apparent. The predicted event timings are in CST (UT-6), but will occur at essentially the same real time for all observers experiencing nighttime. The depicted orientation and Moon altitudes are for an observer in Chicago.

Photos and descriptions of the eclipse would be welcome additions to this thread.

100 Scientists in a locked room

Sabine Hossenfelder has thrown cold water on the Simulation Argument.

http://backreaction.blogspot.com/201...-computer.html

Among other things she says that you cannot get quantum effects from classical bits.

She also says that you would be able to see the clashes between discretization and general relativity.

Now bear in mind that a simulation would not have to simulate an entire universe. It need not simulate anything that is not at least indirectly observed by conscious observers in the simulation. And it does not need to simulate everything to a particle level, since we very rarely observe individual particles. The simulation need only model particles if there is some process that actually observes the action of individual particles.

So I suggest a thought experiment to test her claim that we would be able to detect these discrepancies. 100 scientists are locked in a room and have no communication with the outside world except via a group of scientists on the outside.

The scientists inside can devise experiments and send the instructions to the scientists outside to carry out.

But suppose the scientists inside become suspicious that the scientists outside are not really carrying out the experiments but rather calculating the expected results, adding a bit of fake randomness for instrumentation and measurement imprecision, and then sending the results back inside.

We assume that the outside scientists are just as smart as the inside scientists.

Is there an experiment that the inside scientists could devise where they would be able to detect that the experiment had not really been carried out?

Only science that has been achieved so far is allowed, no full quantum computing.

My guess is no.
(NB thisis under science rather than philosophy since Hossenfelder's is a scientific take on the simulation argument.

Sex charges for female former high school teacher

I think this is going to cause some conniptions in SJW circles, the victims are not male, so they cannot use the 'teacher seduced by student' claim.

Quote:

A female former high school teacher in Perth’s southern suburbs has faced court accused of repeatedly sexually abusing three teenage girls while working at the school where the alleged victims were students.

...

The 28-year-old woman, who cannot be named to protect the identity of her alleged victims, has been charged with 71 offences including rape, “persistent sexual conduct” and indecent assault.

White Privilege - This would be a bit embarrassing

https://www.washingtonpost.com/arts-...=.d50b913c1a2a

Quote:

....CNN legal analyst Areva Martin thought she was talking to a white man Tuesday while appearing as a guest on David Webb’s SiriusXM radio show.

When Webb, a frequent Fox News contributor and host on Fox Nation, said he considered his qualifications more important than his skin color when applying to jobs in journalism, Martin accused him of exercising white privilege.

But there’s a problem with that sentiment, as Webb quickly pointed out:

“Areva, I hate to break it to you, but you should’ve been better prepped,” he responded. “I’m black.”....

Superconducter at -13C possibly as high as 6.85C

LaH10 at 200 gigapascals of pressure.

Researchers discover new evidence of superconductivity at near room temperature

Now all you need to do is develop a new type of insulation for your superconducting wires. Surely that should be much easier than developing a room temperature superconductor.
It just needs to be strong enough to keep the wire under 200 gigapascals of pressure. Also make it so the warmer it gets the harder it squeezes, like shrinkwrap, that would be cool. Easy peasy.

Barr's Confirmation Hearing

Is anyone watching these?

To my mind he seems to be pretty well spoken and makes a good case for himself and his previous writings.

Assuming he is telling the truth, he says that he won't interfere or allow anyone else to interfere with the Muller probe, and that he will release the report publicly as he much as he can based on classified information in it.

He is also again political interference in the DoJ, and noted that even if the President ordered an investigation into someone that the DoJ still had to determine that such an investigation would be appropriate before doing so, or that if the President gives an order which relates to a case he is personally involved in that this would be at least a breach of the Constitution and the President's oath to uphold the law.

From what I have seen, I suspect he will be confirmed bipartisanly and that he might not be as useful to Trump as he was hoping.

ETA: watching it is rather different to seeing what went on in the Kavanaugh confirmations
