Therapist says if you're an atheist you should lie to your kids about God.

The therapist in the below cited article believes that if you don't believe in God or heaven you should lie to your kids (about God) to promote better mental health.

From an article in the Christian Post by Leonardo Blair

"...I am often asked by parents, ‘How do I talk to my child about death if I don’t believe in God or Heaven?’ My answer is always the same: ‘Lie.’ The idea that you simply die and turn to dust may work for some adults, but it doesn’t help children. Belief in Heaven helps them grapple with this tremendous and incomprehensible loss. In an age of broken families, distracted parents, school violence and nightmarish global-warming predictions, imagination plays a big part in children’s ability to cope,” said Komisar, who is Jewish...

500 synchronized drones complement fireworks for NYE in Singapore

500 drones all set for New Year's Eve aerial acrobatics

Quote:

"The performance flow is very intricate and extreme care was put into making sure (the drone component) was done right."

The drones, each about the size of an outstretched palm, will be flying in pre-programmed formations, with the drones manoeuvring as close as 1m from each other. They are operated via a GPS flight system.

Getting the drones to synchronise with the show's other components was no easy task, said Ms Teng Mun Kit, a senior manager from event organiser Avex Asia.

"It's a very tedious process. Even before we decide on which formation would be good for the drones, we have to take into account first the music and the fireworks," added Ms Teng.
I've seen some outlets trying to take a pollution angle on it, but I'm doubtful because of the inputs for making a drone vs. a firework and how much electricity it takes to have a drone do a prolonged flight while powering high-intensity lights.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9qwd1znU3h8

My first search for follow up on this lead me to all the stories about drones being using for NYE here in the U.S.

For security.

Police officer claims he received vulgar message written on McDonalds coffee cup

I should have posted this when I first heard about it, because my alarm bells were ringing, but it's still under investigation.

Here's the story as I saw it yesterday via Fox News:

McDonald's coffee cup with vulgar message given to Kansas police officer: '******* pig'

Quote:

A police officer received an insulting message along with a coffee from McDonald’s.

A police chief from Kansas shared a photo of the coffee cup with a vulgar message written on the receipt.

It reportedly was given to one of his officers who had ordered the drink.

A photo showed the receipt stuck to the side of the cup with the words “F-----g pig” written across it.

The incident occurred early on Saturday morning at a McDonald’s in Junction City, Kan., KWCH reported. The unnamed officer had stopped at the restaurant on the way to work to pick up the coffee.

Herington Police Chief Brian Hornaday shared an unedited version of the photo on Facebook, captioning it, “This is what he paid for. Although I understand this is likely the act of one person and not a representation of the company, when it was brought to their attention the company offered him a ‘free lunch.’ No thank you. A Big Mac and large fries doesn’t make up for it. The US Veteran who continues to serve deserves much more. This is not only bad for McDonald's, but is also a black eye for Junction City.”
So I went hmmm when I read that. Seems like a rather weak way to express one's hatred of police, and one likely to backfire. And this is national news? A police officer received a rude message written on a receipt by an employee of McDonalds? Really? Also, why is it that hate messages written on receipts always turn out to be fake? Curious.

So, update:
Kansas McDonald’s denies employees wrote expletive on cop’s coffee cup

Quote:

HERINGTON, Kan. (WIBW/Gray News) – Authorities are investigating after a Kansas police officer said he received a cup of coffee over the weekend with an expletive written on it.
Dana Cook, the owner of the McDonald’s in Junction City, said he has video showing it wasn’t one of his employees.
“My McDonald’s (employees) have the utmost respect for all members of law enforcement and the military and were troubled by the accusation made,” he said.
“We thoroughly reviewed our security video from every angle, which clearly shows the words were not written by one of our employees."
Herington Police Chief Brian Hornaday said he looked at the video on Monday.
"Based on what I saw this morning in meeting with the McDonald's representatives, we are looking further into this matter," Hornaday said.
A picture of the cup posted by the police chief on his personal Facebook page shows the words "(expletive) pig" written on the side.
So it's still under investigation, but if this is what it seems to be, why would a police officer do something so dumb?
To make a point about how bad police officers have it? To drum up sympathy for police and hatred for McDonalds?
It's not the first time a police officer reported a fake crime either (although this probably doesn't rise to the level of a crime).

9/11: How they Faked the Videos

Full article here.

How they spoofed the “live” shots of flight 175:
  1. Rehearse the handful of perspectives of flight 175 that will be broadcast live.
  2. The fireball will erupt from the south face of the South Tower.
  3. The rehearsed perspectives were from the north face of the North Tower (opposite the fireball).
  4. By design these rehearsed “live” perspectives will fail to capture the crash of the alleged plane.
  5. Create a CGI animation of a jet with a transparent background to match each of the rehearsed shots.
  6. On the big day: from the same rehearsed perspectives, capture video footage of the fireball that erupted from the south face of the South Tower.
  7. Live television is never live; there is always a broadcast delay to prevent unwanted content from airing. Utilizing the broadcast delay of how ever many seconds were necessary,
  8. overlay the CGI animations onto the live videos of the fireball.
  9. Flatten the video layers of the CGI planes and the live fireball.
  10. Release the merged video layers as “live.”

How they spoofed the “amateur” videos (not live):
  1. Deploy dozens of photographers to pose as amateurs.
  2. Rehearse each of their perspectives and create a CGI animation of a jet with a transparent background to match.
  3. The first fireball erupts from the north face of the North Tower.
  4. 18 minutes until the next fireball.
  5. All the live network broadcasts are capturing videos of the hole in the north face of the North Tower.
  6. Dozens of “amateur” cameras are capturing videos of the south face of the South Tower.
  7. The second fireball erupts, this time from the south face of the South Tower.
  8. The Networks broadcast live videos showing what looks like a plane crashing into the towers; the world is horrified.
  9. Each of the “amateur” photographers edits their respective video, removing what really cut the hole in the South Tower and adding a plane.
  10. The propaganda organs release these videos periodically over the following days, weeks, months and years.

When Does Religion Become Just Silly?

I can accept the notion of a god, however you define it, as being involved in creation. I don't entirely discount the possibility what's more, although I think it most unlikely.

The notion of a caring god, who takes great interest in our activities, I find much harder to accept. This not only because the god seemingly prefers not to intervene in our favour, and keeps itself invisible, but because the purpose behind our creation eludes me.

When we progress to the notion of a god who creates perfect beings, (angels and us), who then turn out to be not perfect, (which is somehow there own fault), then you've lost me altogether.

So then we go still further, to notions of a place of eternal torment, where hapless souls suffer for eternity, just because they don't believe in the the secretive god.

I mean it just gets sillier and sillier.

I think that Ame Perdue said it best in the New Rubaiyat:

"But still I hear the Wrangling Sects proclaim
Their Paradises and their Seas of Flame,
Their Holy Ghosts and mystic Trinities.
With no degree of Intellectual Shame."

Yes "Intellectual Shame" is what's missing.

A bit of race science in the NYT opinion section.

The paper of record posting some light race science. From everyone's favorite columnist, Bret "The Bedbug" Stephens.

"The Secrets of Jewish Genius"

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/12/27/o...=tw-nytopinion

The paper later retracted a portion of the column with this comment:

Quote:

An earlier version of this Bret Stephens column quoted statistics from a 2005 paper that advanced a genetic hypothesis for the basis of intelligence among Ashkenazi Jews. After publication Mr. Stephens and his editors learned that one of the paper’s authors, who died in 2016, promoted racist views. Mr. Stephens was not endorsing the study or its authors’ views, but it was a mistake to cite it uncritically. The effect was to leave an impression with many readers that Mr. Stephens was arguing that Jews are genetically superior. That was not his intent. He went on instead to argue that culture and history are crucial factors in Jewish achievements and that, as he put it, “At its best, the West can honor the principle of racial, religious and ethnic pluralism not as a grudging accommodation to strangers but as an affirmation of its own diverse identity. In that sense, what makes Jews special is that they aren’t. They are representational.” We have removed reference to the study from the column.

Brett originally cited Henry Harpending, who claims the genetics make Jews inherently smarter, sub-saharan blacks inherently lazy, and other such lovely eugenicist nonsense. Harpending was widely considered a white supremacist crackpot by real geneticists

Why are there no current UFO threads?

This is arguably the most common item in the skeptics world, and the papers are lousy with sightings this past year, including just a day or two ago in New York.

If anything remains of a skeptics' forum, these should be called out with explanations given. I hope this isn't being responded to with a mean "go search for it, it's all explained decades ago!" or "If you look on the thread on page 14 of the thread list, post #518, obviously, it's explained right there!"

Obama and Trump tied for Most Admired Man

I bet that has to really get Trump's goat. Being tied with "that" guy.

Quote:

The new Gallup poll released Monday shows that admiration for Trump has increased in 2019, despite the findings of special counsel Robert Mueller's report and the president's impeachment in the House of Representatives. In 2017, the president was the second-most admired man, chosen by 14 percent of respondents, while in 2018 the number decreased to 13 percent. Comparatively, Obama has been the most admired man for 12 years in a row.
No doubt Trump is going to talk about this on Twitter, if he hasn't already, but the fact Obama has held it for 12 years is going to chap his anus as well.

I didn't want to dig through all of the other threads and this wasn't related to his presidency. I can't believe admiration for him is on the rise though. He's such a miserable ****.

Sexist ad ?

Long story short there is a bit of a kerfuffle over a new stripper club type ad appearing on buses.

Ad (Safe as for work. Just words)

To be fair, personally find it a bit sexist, but not majorly given the way blokes seem to be portrayed as idiots these days

The odd thing is the people that created it are women. So does this make it self sexism?

It is trying to encourage young women to get involved in the trades.

It obviously worked or it wouldn't make the national media.

Provocative ads placed on buses to draw women's attention to work in construction

A provocative advertisement Otago Polytechnic has put on buses to draw women's attention to a career in construction.

An advertisement using strip club imagery to draw more women into construction careers is tone deaf and could have been done a lot better, a gender academic says.

The advertising campaign has been seen on the back of buses around Dunedin with the words ''Girls Girls Girls'' in bright pink neon light with the words ''hiring now'' next to it.

It includes pictures of building equipment in the background and at the bottom it says ''think construction'' with the address for an Otago Polytechnic webpage explaining the advertisement.

''If you're reading this, you must have seen one of our ads,'' the webpage reads.

''These ads are a bit cheeky, but they've got to be — challenging society's ingrained gender norms isn't easy!.....

The United States government needs major restructuring.

The original Constitution has always been a document with flaws. It is amazing that it has lasted for 230 years. And while I think a perfect Constitutional government is impossible, I believe ours requires major restructuring.

For example, twice in the last twenty years, the loser in the popular vote won the Presidential election due to the electoral college. We have issues with gerrymandering, voter suppression as well as urgan states be underrepresented.

I would argue that the US government be overhauled in its entirety. I believe we should move to a parliamentary system and get rid of state governments entirely and possibly implement maybe regional governments. However, if we keep our present system, at a minimum we should eliminate the electoral college and probably the Senate.

Our present system gives small states far too much power. The nation kowtows to the needs of Oklahoma, Montana and Idaho while at the same time ignoring New York and California.

New Russian weapon can travel 27 times the speed of sound

MOSCOW (AP) — A new intercontinental weapon that can fly 27 times the speed of sound became operational Friday, Russia’s defense minister reported to President Vladimir Putin, bolstering the country’s nuclear strike capability.

Putin has described the Avangard hypersonic glide vehicle as a technological breakthrough comparable to the 1957 Soviet launch of the first satellite. The new Russian weapon and a similar system being developed by China have troubled the United States, which has pondered defense strategies.

The Avangard is launched atop an intercontinental ballistic missile, but unlike a regular missile warhead that follows a predictable path after separation it can make sharp maneuvers in the atmosphere en route to target, making it much harder to intercept.

Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu informed Putin that the first missile unit equipped with the Avangard hypersonic glide vehicle entered combat duty.................

Dave Barry’s Year in Review: 2019 was an ‘eventful’ — bad — year

I put this in politics because it mostly involves politics, and this forum could use a few laughs.

Dave Barry’s Year in Review: 2019 was an ‘eventful’ — bad — year

Quote:

It was an extremely eventful year.

We are using “eventful” in the sense of “bad.”

It was a year so eventful that every time another asteroid whizzed past the Earth, barely avoiding a collision that would have destroyed human civilization, we were not 100 percent certain it was good news.

We could not keep up with all the eventfulness. Every day, we’d wake up to learn that some new shocking alleged thing had allegedly happened, and before we had time to think about it, the political-media complex, always in Outrage Condition Red, would explode in righteous fury, with Side A and Side B hurling increasingly nasty accusations at each other and devoting immense energy to thinking up ways to totally DESTROY the other side on Twitter, a medium that has the magical power to transform everything it touches, no matter how stupid it is, into something even stupider.

Results of a new extra-sensory test

I recently conducted a new ESP (extra-sensory perception) or telepathy test on Yahoo Answers. I believe the test was a moderate success.

My question was:
Quote:

A little extra-sensory test: which text did I write?

I recently wrote and circled one of the following four texts:

(1) human progress

(2) solar, wind and safe nuclear power plants

(3) no nuclear weapon

(4) less military spending

I ask you to say which one I wrote. If you do, you might get the best answer for this question.
(link: https://answers.yahoo.com/question/i...3165542AAdfnoP).

Although five people answered, only two actually participated in the test.

First, Satyrette of Liberty (a member with 7% of best answers on the Yahoo website) replied:
Quote:

My guess is the first one.
Then John (22% of best answers) gave the correct answer:
Quote:

I don't have psychic powers that I know of, but I'm going with (2).
After I gave him the best answer, he commented:
Quote:

Woo-hoo! I rescind my previous statement, I am now a proven psychic!
Of course, some people might point out that, although John did say:
Quote:

I am now a proven psychic
,
his comment sounded perhaps a little ironic. The last comment by ioerr is of interest too.

Note that a novelty of this test, compared to some tests I did on this forum years ago, is that it tried to have, let us say, a "social orientation", trying to be kind of a "guiding light" for humanity at a time (in Trump's age) when it may need some guidance. You shouldn't be too surprised if some events reported recently in the news (not necessarily good news) are somehow (in my opinion, at least) related to this modest test.

All comments helpful to improve these kinds of test, or their analyses, are welcome. Please remain polite.

One of the victims was stabbed at least 6 times. The fifth/least severe case had a cut in his hand. New York man beaten to death for $1

New Yorker, 61, dies four days after being savagely beaten for just one dollar in brutal Christmas Eve mugging

It is unclear if the attack was a homophobic hate crime, or if the assailants were simply looking to rob the pair but they took $1 from Fresnada.

He was beaten so badly that he suffered swelling to his brain and a fractured skull. Caceres was not seriously injured. Fresnada was rushed to the hospital but he was pronounced dead on Saturday, four days after the assault.

The NYPD is still looking for the assailants. They have released surveillance footage of the pair in the hope that a member of the public will recognize them and come forward.

The two suspects are both young black males. On the night of the attack, one was wearing a red head scarf and grey jacket.

Caceres told The New York Daily News this week how Fresnada protected him. He refers to him as his husband but the pair were not legally married.

'My husband tried to defend me. The guy had his fist ready like he was ready to attack me. My husband said, "Don’t you get close to him!"' he said...

How Reliable is CreditKarma?

I don't really use credit, but I figured that it is time to get with the program. I decided to start by checking my score with CreditKarma.

I was prepared for it to be completely atrocious, mainly because I was a complete ass when I was 18-19, didn't pay some things (although I believe they were mostly medical bills), and I have had a bank account closed in not good standing in the past. Since then, I haven't really used credit at all, nor have I ever taken out any loans (other than for school, which is just within the past 2-3 years). So, it's the day of reckoning. I'm ready to see the damage I've done to myself and my reputation going forward.

I made a creditkarma account, and I don't know how, but I'm pretty sure they've given me the wrong report. It says I have a score of like 785. That isn't possible, because I did bad things and then I did NO things. How could I have that score? I couldn't, sadly. I wish.

How common is it for creditkarma to get someone's identity wrong in this way, and how can I get the correct report?

Thanks, and please don't be too hard on me. I know I'm bad at being a real adult. I'm trying to fix that.

ETA - I should add that I have had other bank accounts since the closed one without any problems. I have also never had an actual credit card; I've always used debit.

Price of the units cannot be more than at most a few 1000 dollars. Those units Do not appear to be one time use, or at least the battery packs are not, and those would be the most expensive component.
21,000 per month is extortion for people with this cancer.

The battery pack might be the most expensive part in the device but the most expensive component is the research that went in to to it. Stop paying for that and these devices don't get developed. The price has to cover the entire company of Novocure, any third parties that may have contributed to the development, and any external costs arising from the clinical trial and regulatory processes.

Is your Smart House vulnerable?

So this could have gone in a bunch of forums, such as Science or Computing, but I think it's also a current issue for those that depend on or are thinking about using smart devices for the safety and running of their homes.

It turns out that with a laser you can activate the microphones in smart devices and this creates a vulnerability into Smart Homes.

Check out this video by Smarter Every Day where they investigate, or read the paper by lightcommands

Quote:

We propose a new class of signal injection attacks on microphones based on the photoacoustic effect: converting light to sound using a microphone. We show how an attacker can inject arbitrary audio signals to the target microphone by aiming an amplitude-modulated light at the microphone’s aperture. We then proceed to show how this effect leads to a remote voice-command injection attack on voice-controllable systems.

Examining various products that use Amazon’s Alexa, Apple’s Siri, Facebook’s Portal, and Google Assistant, we show how to use light to obtain full control over these devices at distances up to 110 meters and from two separate buildings.

Next, we show that user authentication on these devices is often lacking or non-existent, allowing the attacker to use light-injected voice commands to unlock the target’s smartlock-protected front doors, open garage doors, shop on e-commerce websites at the target’s expense, or even locate, unlock and start various vehicles (e.g., Tesla and Ford) that are connected to the target’s Google account. Finally, we conclude with possible software and hardware defenses against our attacks.

If you have any smart devices then you need to watch this video. It is from the SmarterEveryDay channel.

Smart device is something important (door, air conditioning system) you can use to control via your voice. The brand is not important.

What this video is saying is that if you point a laser at the microphone then you can send a command to the microphone via the laser. Lesson: never have any such microphone that is visible from outside.

Psi and brain activity?

Been going through old threads for awhile, so I’m not sure whose still active here haha

So I’ve gone through a lot of psi phases and I’d say I’m more skeptical than not, but there’s one thing that does kind of seem somewhat convincing

In terms of studies, I have 3 that concern me here

This study didn’t neccessarily prove psi at all, since the results were at chance. But how is it that these researchers seem to consistently get results that kind of defy logic/causation?

Essentially the idea here is that they can detect a certain pattern in a brain state that occurs when a subject is shown a correct target vs a wrong one, and these researchers have done this experiment 4 times now.

I can’t post articles, but if you look up the bolder it’ll show up as the first or second option on the browser, I have the abstract tho (for the first one it’s on semantic scholar, the second one is on ncbi)

Differential event-related potentials to targets and decoys in a guessing task

On each of 40 trials, ERPs were elicited by digitized images of 4 playing cards, sequentially presented on a video monitor for 150 ms. After the last card was presented, subjects guessed which of the 4 cards would be the target for that trial. Fol- lowing the subject’s guess, the computer randomly selected one of the 4 cards to be the target and presented this as feedback; the remaining 3 cards served as nontarget decoys for the trial. We found that a negative Slow Wave measured at 150–500 ms post-stimulus had greater amplitude when elicited by targets than when elicited by nontarget decoys (p .05). This result indicates an ap- parent communications anomaly because no viable conventional explanation of the ERP differential could be identified. It is the fourth study in our labora- tory employing essentially the same design to yield this or a similar ERP ef- fect.

I realize it’s not neccessarily proof of psi at all, but how is this possible? I can think of 2 ways.

1. Some sort of measurement error,
2. Fraud or file drawer error

All this is basically saying is that when we see something that’s a correct option vs an incorrect option regardless of whether the subject knows whether or not the option is correct or incorrect, and controlled for differences in the target.

The first test was done with Malcolm Bessent, whose a known “psychic.” The second and third test were done with non psi selected participants

Persinger study on ingo swann

Quote:

In the present study, the artist Ingo Swann, who helped develop the process of remote viewing (awareness of distant objects or places without employing normal senses), was exposed during a single setting of 30 min. to specific patterns of circumcerebral magnetic fields that significantly altered his subjective experiences. Several times during subsequent days, he was asked to sit in a quiet chamber and to sketch and to describe verbally distant stimuli (pictures or places) beyond his normal senses. The proportions of unusual 7-Hz spike and slow wave activity over the occipital lobes per trial were moderately correlated (rho=.50) with the ratings of accuracy between these distal, hidden stimuli and his responses. A neuropsychological assessment and Magnetic Resonance Imaging indicated a different structural and functional organization within the parieto-occipital region of the subject's right hemisphere from organizations typically noted. The results suggest that this type of paranormal phenomenon, often dismissed as methodological artifact or accepted as proofs of spiritual existence, is correlated with neurophysiological processes and physical events. Remote viewing may be enhanced by complex experimentally generated magnetic fields designed to interact with the neuromagnetic "binding factor" of consciousness.
Persinger on remote viewing. He studied a guy called ingo swann, a known remote viewer, and found a correlation in terms of his accuracy vs high alpha wave spikes and the same pattern in the experiment above. I’m not sure how good his overall accuracy was. I’m not sure how consistent this result is overall however.

So I guess I have 2 questions from this

1. Are there any problems with the first paper in terms of data analysis, or selective reporting of the brain data, because that’s the only real problem I can think of there. But how is the idea that there is a predictable brain activity when we see a correct target vs an incorrect target even possible?

2. What do we make of the idea that remote viewing (and psi related things in general) accuracy seem to have a correlation with brain activity? Regardless of the total hit rate or not, the fact that most experiments seem to find a correlation of high alpha activity and psi accuracy is really weird.

Now I’m not sure how constant this correlation is, and I find that finding studies that don’t replicate or show no effect are harder to find and probably don’t get published as much, so that could explain the second effect. Furthermore, if it was real you would think there would be a study right now where they attempt to discern the accuracy just by using the brain activity to test it but I don’t think this has ever been done (like basically if there’s a trend in data, researchers are generally not gonna publish a paper showing an opposite trend, specifically parapsychology researchers)

I’m stumped for the first one though. Not neccessarily that it proves or disproves psi, but just the idea that you can tell if someone sees a correct or incorrect target by trends in brain activity, regardless of prior knowledge. I haven’t seen anything responding to or against this paper either so I’m pretty confused here.

Again, I don’t think there’s any evidence of psi ability, but more so that it just doesn’t make sense how something like this is possible outside of fraud

Edit: found something a bit interesting

Experiment one found slow waves of activity from the 400-500ms mark after exposer

Experiment Two, I couldn’t find a lot of info on, but while they found slow wave differences it was in one hemisphere rather than both like in experiment one

Experiment three found it from the 150-400ms mark after exposure, the 400-500 mark approached significance but didn’t reach it. They said this was their hypothesis that they’d find trends in both spots, and they added the first one after seeing a trend here and revisiting their earlier data, but somehow I doubt that lol

Experiment four found it from the 150-500ms mark after exposure.

So while slow waves were constant, from one to two it was only found in one hemisphere, and from 2 to three they changed the timing, and from 3 to 4 they decided to make the time the 2 timing they contested from 3 to 4 combined

In the abstract they said the hypothesized this, (for the three one) but from a book excerpt from the author
I wonder how much of this was post hoc, and if there were possible failed experiments before this that they didn’t produce. 1 and 2 occurred in the same year (1992), although it was the same subject. 3 and 4 on the other hand, occurred in 1998 and 2002.

Persinger also lowkey doesn’t strike me as someone super reliable, considering the god helmet replication thing where he got salty at a replication attempt by another team that he apparently approved of because it failed

Also, there was a 2008 study on a similar task by an fmri. I don’t think an fmri measures the same things, but they found nothing, and the study was probably better

Minnesota GOP attemping Trump only ballot

The question "Why can't the GOP (usually on this board it seems) exclude whack jobs/Nazis/etc from running for the GOP" comes up quite a bit. It's been repeated that "they can't" but I've never seen the laws regarding this. Minnesota is new to the primary system and the GOP there has submitted ballots that exclude everyone but Trump and facing legal action over that. So we can see how this plays out.

Well-known British barrister jokes on Twitter about beating a trapped fox to death

Well-known British barrister Jolyon Maugham tweeted this morning (on @JolyonMaugham), in an apparent attempt at humour, about having battered to death a fox that was trapped in a wire fence in his garden (he keeps chickens apparently, which is obviously also relevant to this story). His tweet read:

"Already this morning I have killed a fox with a baseball bat. How's your Boxing Day going?"

Within minutes of him posting the tweet, Twitter lit up with a mixture of requests for clarification and outrage. In an attempt to justify his actions (and his tweet), Maugham said it was probably what the RSPCA (the England/Wales charity which protects animals) would have done had he called them.

But it's certainly NOT what the RSPCA (nor any vet) would have done in the circumstances. And on the face of it, it appears that Maugham broke the law.

So there's a double level of astonishment here: firstly that Maugham - one of the most high-profile legal figures in the country - should have judged that his actions in beating the fox to death were appropriate and legal, and secondly that he judged that his actions were worth of documenting in a jocular tweet.

The RSPCA has already said that it's launched an investigation.

[Actioned] Android wont stop auto-updating the OS...

... and I'm thinking "will it blend?". :(

Pretty pissed at it by this point. Newly activated cheap year old stock for TracFone, did an OS update. Damn 560Mb and quite an install/update but I figured... what the hell, get it done.
That was a week ago. Now... up to several times a day (yes... a day) it grabs what would seem to be a small update (given the speed of the progress bar as it finishes and later installs) then all but nags me into accepting a shutdown/reboot and 5 minute install.
I had every option I could find turned off, searched it online and the only answer boiled down to activating the dev options and turning off auto OS updates there.

Done and done... no joy. :(
Just had a YT & Hulu session interupted for the second time... today. AGAIN. :(
What say ye... deeper dive into the sys parameters? Or a glitch in the initial update d/l? Can this damn OS really need multiple little updates day after day?

(I ask that because my other two Androids are both years old and underpowered enough that neither ever had any updates available... this is new to me.)

Jay-Z suing small Australian charity.

I have never had a great opinion of US rap “artists” but when reputed billionaire **** Jay-Z decided to sue a small charity for allegedly paraphrasing a quote he allegedly stole in the first place, my microscopic regard has disappeared.

Now the charity, and I will admit I have financially supported them (modestly):

https://www.thelittlehomie.com.au/?g...UaAjpREALw_wcB

They employ homeless people to produce and sell clothes and books, including the now notorious "AB to Jay-Z" in attempt to help young kids with spelling.

So this **** claims:

https://www.perthnow.com.au/entertai...ng-b881395499z

Quote:

In his suit, Jay-Z, legally named Shawn Carter, claims the retailer knowingly attempted to trade off his reputation and breached copyright of lyrics in the hit song 99 Problems.

The back of the book includes the quote "If you're having alphabet problems I feel bad for you son, I got 99 problems but my ABCs ain't one".
Did they quote him? Well no. This is the work of art Little Homie allegedly stole:

Quote:

Jay-Z's song famously opened with "If you're having girl problems, I feel bad for you son, I got 99 problems but a bitch ain't one."
And yet Ice T wrote this line:

Quote:

Ice-T and Brother Marquis - included the lyrics 'so if you havin' girl problems, I feel bad for you son, got 99 problems and a b***h ain't one - hit me.'
I’ve seen some utter ******** law suits in my time, but this takes the cake.

Familial DNA searches: A great tool for Law enforcement or gross invasion of privacy?

For those who have not heard of this, a familial DNA search is "a search by law enforcement in DNA databases for genetic information indicating a relative of a person they seek to identify. When a search for an exact match to a DNA sample comes up fruitless, a search of familial DNA may bring back a partial match, indicating a sibling, child, parent or other blood relative. In fact, this is how the infamous Golden State Killer was finally identified and apprehended in 2018, more than 30 years after his last known crime spree."

https://criminal.findlaw.com/crimina...-searches.html

A recent case where a 38 year old unsolved murder have been solved using familial DNA is bound to bring up this debate once again. Turns out the single mum was murdered by her son's junior football coach.

Google ReCAPTCHA

Am I the only one on the web that hates Google ReCAPTCHA? You know, "Click all the images that have TRAFFIC LIGHTS"?

I HATE them! I hate the fact they're so damned ambigious. Is a square where there is only a little bit of the flange of the light fixture supposed to be clicked on not? What about the pedestrian cross-walk light? Or the teeny-tiny set of lights three blocks down the road that you can just barely make out?

And then you get another. And another. AND ANOTHER! Sometimes I've had to solve up to eight of them before I get a "pass."

One comment I read on Slashdot, albeit unconfirmed, is if you get too many wrong Google will tell the website "this is a robot" but still continue to give the user challenges. If this is true, then if you get challenge after challenge you don't know if you should continue solving them or if you should just give up, clear everything out, and try again.

Two other things I hate about them. First, Google is using my labour, without compensation, to train their image matching AI. One of the richest companies on the planet and they're making people work for them for free. Secondly, there are other ways web site developers can manage spurious blog comments and robot signups without having to resort to pissing on their visitors.

And don't tell me that I should just not bother visiting the site. All too often I hit these damned things in order to sign up to a site to report bugs in their products, or to get access to services that pretty much only that site offers.

And finally, the sites that are using the ReCAPTCHA simply don't seem to care. Google sure as hell doesn't care about me getting pissed off at then, and any site that I've contacted about their use of it, whether I'm polite about it or impolite, usually simply ignores my complaint.

Quantum Supremacy — Factoring Large Primes

Quote:

Quantum Computing Supremacy Fight — Google Versus IBM by Chris Roberts

Multiply 1,048,589 by 1,048,601, and you’ll get 1,099,551,473,989.
Does this blow your mind? It should, maybe! That 13-digit prime number
is the largest-ever prime number to be factored by a quantum computer,
one of a series of quantum computing-related breakthroughs (or at least
claimed breakthroughs) achieved over the last few months of the decade.

An IBM computer factored this very large prime number about two months
after Google announced that it had achieved “quantum supremacy”—a clunky
term for the claim, disputed by its rivals including IBM as well as others, that
Google has a quantum machine that performed some math normal computers
simply cannot.

What would really blow my mind?
Factoring complex numbers like quaternions.

P. S. Obligatory math joke:

Is there more than one? If so, which is the best?

Homo Erectus: Evolution Problem or Dating Issue?

The family tree of the hominids has just one family member left and that is us, the Homo sapiens. There has been much discussion as to why the other hominid branches died out, for example Homo neanderthalensis. One group of hominids the Homo erectus, so called because this is when man evolved from shuffling along on its back legs using the forearms as leverage to standing and walking upright. They were thought to have evolved into other branches such as the Homo hobbitus ( so named because of its short stature) and Homo floresiensis some of which were thought to have started becoming extinct up to 500 thousand years ago when Homo Sapiens was first thought to have evolved. The missing link between advanced primates such as the bonobo chimpanzee to man has yet to be discovered,

What the scientists look for is evidence of hominds becoming upright to take the massive evolutionary leap into walking, hence great excitement whenever primate footprints are found embedded in ancient stone suggesting this.

From fossil findings of Homo Erectus skulls found in Java, Indonesia, some scientists in the 1990's believed Homo Erectus was still around as little as 39,000 years ago - roughly the time when Homo Sapiens spread into Europe, Neanderthal Man having already been there at least 43,000 years ago with some dispute that they had ever emigrated from Africa at all, with some believing there had been three set of different groups of Homo X, Y and Z developing side by side at the same time in different parts of the world.

The current establishment view is that of Professor Chris Stringer, who firmly established that 'all humans came out of Africa', in a clear line of evolution. In other words, a single chain. However, the reader should be aware that not all scientists agree with this. Hence, the fascination of the new find which is dated at just 112,000 years ago as it seems to indicate Homo Erectus was around after the first humans evolved in Africa >500K years ago and before they first migrated out of the continent between 50K - 75K years ago. This throws doubt on the lineal theory of human evolution, which in comic strips is depicted as beginning with a hunkering down chimpanzee to a neanderthal with dragging knuckles gradually becoming upright [before evolving into Homer Simpson {is the popular punchline}].

So, it will be interesting to see how Chris Stringer analyses this new find.

Quote:

Prof Chris Stringer, research leader on human evolution at London's Natural History Museum, who was not involved with the work, commented: "This is a very comprehensive study of the depositional context of the famous Ngandong Homo erectus partial skulls and shin bones, and the authors build a strong case that these individuals died and were washed into the deposits of the Solo River about 112,000 years ago.

"This age is very young for such primitive-looking Homo erectus fossils, and establishes that the species persisted on Java for well over one million years."
<snip>

Quote:

But why did Homo erectus survive so late on Java? In Africa, the species was probably gone by 500,000 years ago; in China it vanished some 400,000 years ago. Russell Ciochon thinks that it was probably outcompeted by other human species elsewhere, but Java's location allowed it to thrive in isolation.

However, the results show the fossils came from a period when environmental conditions on Java were changing. What were once open woodlands were transforming into rainforest. Prof Ciochon thinks this could mark the exact point of extinction of Homo erectus on the island.

Last appearance?
No Homo erectus are found after this time, he explained, and there's a gap with no human activity at all until Homo sapiens turns up on Java around 39,000 years ago. Prof Ciochon believes H. erectus was too dependent on the open savannah and too inflexible to adapt to life in a rainforest.

"Homo sapiens is the only hominin species that lives in a tropical forest," he explained. "I think it's mainly because of the cultural attributes of Homo sapiens - the ability to make all these specialised tools."

"Once this rainforest flora and fauna spread across Java, that's the end of erectus."

But Chris Stringer sounded a note of caution.

"The authors claim that this is therefore the last known occurrence of the species, and that this indicates there was no overlap of the species with Homo sapiens in Java, as H. sapiens arrived much later," he said.

"I'm not convinced about that as other supposedly late Homo erectus material from Javanese sites like Ngawi and Sambungmacan remain to be properly dated, and they may be younger still. Alternatively, they may correlate with the ages of the Ngandong fossils, but that should be the next stage of investigation."
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-50827603

Perhaps a hint of scepticism from Professor Stringer, there, about the conclusions being drawn that whilst Homo Erectus died out as a result of being outcompeted by Homo Sapiens, on Java this didn't happen - the theory being put - because they were not subject to the same competition as elsewhere.

The Far Side is back

There is another thread about books we read and reread over and over again. Some of the ones I never stop looking through are the old Far Side comics.

It has some sketchbooks up already with some previously unreleased material, with more coming. He'll be adding some new comics from time to time as well.

I am happy about this. I don't imagine there will be a whole lot of new material, but even a few might be nice.

Plastic, the miracle material turning major pollutant

Plastic has made miracles in our times, safer food preservation, replacement joints and heart valves.

It has also become a major pollutant including islands of plastics in multiple oceans, microplastics in the food supply and the general difficulties in recycling certain types.

I watched a German documentary on the microplastics mainly curious on which types of plastic make that problem.

I was guessing the new bio/oxy/solar degradable types but the gal in the lab coat said PET and the type used in bottle caps. It floats around long enough it breaks down into tiny particles.

She never mentioned the fast breakdown types but I cannot imagine those are all rainbows and flowers once the particles enter the environment either.

Mexico will be joining the plastic ban nations in 2020, the one use items, drinking straws, shopping bags and the lot. Even one use PET soda bottles will be replaced with returnable bottles they say.

Where are you and what is going on there about this issue?

Stuck on Arrow-Down

Please consider me as your elderly uncle and do some family IT support.

Over the past few months I've had an occasional problem on the older computer assigned by my wife to my use. I like it better anyhow.

It's a Dell laptop with Windows 7. Don't remember the model and the little sticker has fallen off. Oh, Control Panel says model N5010, whatever that means.

I'm using it with an external monitor, keyboard, and mouse. The mouse and keyboard are wireless and from Microsoft, because that's what they had at the store when I needed to replace them.

Problem: It's like I'm holding my finger on the down-arrow key. Everything goes wildly scrolling. It's been very occasional until tonight when it happened twice in a half hour. First time was solved by rebooting. I at least managed to do that, in the past it's been difficult due to the scrolling problem.
Second time I pulled out the receiver for the wireless mouse and keyboard and it stopped. That's great except I'm pretty sure I've done it before and it didn't help.
Oh, and in between both times, I pounded on the down arrow key on the wireless keyboard a couple times, because why not?
Note that the first time this evening it happened while I was near the end of a fairly long video and had not touched the either keyboard for a good half-hour.
Best guess at a cause: I eat in front of the computer. Crumbs have got into the wireless keyboard. But no other keys seem to be stuck, and I wasn't using the keyboard the first time this evening.
Second guess: Microsoft hates me, or something.

Your guess? Solutions?
Please don't say Mac or Unix, ain't gonna happen. I might consider a Chromebook. I'm too old for this crap.

Too young to own a hamster, but old enough to take responsibility for murder

Quote:

It is possible that you are not in the best place to deal with more bad news about Britain and its enduring commitment to moral failure. But*we get not only the leaders, but also the television we deserve. Responsible Child (BBC Two) is a drama built around one extraordinary fact – that, in England and Wales, children as young as 10 can be tried for murder as if they were adults. Think for a moment of any 10-year-olds you know and imagine them in crown court being assumed to have the capacity of a grown man or woman. In fact, 7,057 of their pre-pubescent peers have been through exactly that since 1995. That is the year, incidentally, that the UN pointed out that having such a young age of criminal responsibility was incompatible with the UK’s obligations, as part of said UN, on children’s rights.

...

The drama follows the story of 12-year-old Ray (Billy Barratt, an actor the same age as his character, who turns in a credible and heartbreaking performance) and his 23-year-old brother, Nathan (James Tarpey doing likewise), living under the tyranny of their mother’s boyfriend, Scott. It is told in two timeframes. The preparation for Ray’s trial plays out in the present. We flash back repeatedly to the events that led him there, from the “ordinary” fear the boys live with under Scott’s rule, to Scott’s armed attack on Nathan, for which he is charged with attempted murder – only for charges to be dropped and Scott to return to the home more furious than ever.
https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-r...ied-for-murder

I should note here that the British people have shown themselves to be prone to extreme levels of vitriolic abuse against children who commit crimes, almost to the point that lynching a 12 year old would be deemed okay. Rather than to restrain these savage tendencies, British tabloids and politicians have often fanned the flames of hatred for their own short term interests. This is the kind of behaviour that is expected of simple and brutal people in developing countries, not a "civilised" and developed country.

It does not have to be that way. Naively one might think that a 12 year old who intentionally kills someone would otherwise get away with it were they not held legally responsible, but that's obviously not the case in the real world. Depending on the specifics of the criminal behaviour, it might be more than justified that said child be institutionalized. In that regard it's more or less equivalent to how insane individuals are treated.

The fact that they are deemed to not have the mental capacity or maturity to take responsibility for their actions is simply a recognition of the fact that normal criminal penalties are wholly inappropriate as a response. Insane people, those with intellectual deficiencies and those who lack mental maturity, wheter due to their young age or otherwise, are thus supposed to be handled differently than "normal people".

Unfortunately it takes quite some effort to repress peoples tendency to demand retribution and revenge. One only has to look at the situation in countries like India, where the people cheer when the police murder alleged rapists in cold blood, to see the attitudes that need to be repressed in order to maintain a relative peaceful society. Consistently recognizing that people under some age are too immature to be held responsible for their actions is one such civilizing tendency. That means it doesn't cease to be the case if they do something horrible like killing someone.

Interesting article about a woman, Susan Gerbic, has devoted herself to debunking psychics. She states there 95,000 psychic business's, with a yearly revenue of 2 billion dollars!

She credits Randi for her inspiration! (She got some good tricks in with Sylvia Browne.) I hope Randi is proud of her, she is doing a great job!

IG Horowitz report thread.

Fusion GPS co-founder Glenn Simpson discussed their investigation into President Trump and the creation of the Steele dossier.

This was another excellent interview discussing the Horowitz report, the Carter Page, the Steele dossier, all the Russian and Trumpian players. This was an important interview given Barr and Trump are still trying to quash the Mueller report. They are completely distorting the Horowitz finding. There were so many important things revealed in this interview. It's well worth the hour.

Excuse the caps, CSPAN text is always in caps.
Quote:

THE BODY OF EVIDENCE THAT IS EMERGED, LEAVES A LITTLE QUESTION ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED. THERE WAS AN EFFORT TO ELECT TRUMP PRESIDENT AND HE INSTIGATED AND ENCOURAGED IT. WHETHER THERE'S ENOUGH EVIDENCE TO CHARGE YOU CAN'T ARGUE THERE WAS 140 CONTACTS BETWEEN TRUMP PEOPLE OR QUESTIONS DURING THE CAMPAIGN. TRUMP WAS DOING BUSINESS, TRYING TO DO BUSINESS SECRETLY DURING THE CAMPAIGN. SUE TO MY MIND, THIS WAS REALLY CLEAR. I GET THE FACT THAT OTHER PEOPLE DON'T SEE THAT BECAUSE THERE'S BEEN THIS DELIBERATE EFFORT TO OBSCURE THAT. THE HIGHEST LEVEL OF OUR GOVERNMENT TRUMP AND ATTORNEY GENERAL FOR THE BARR HAS SUCCEEDED TO SOME EXTENT INTO CONFUSING ABOUT THE FACTS.

CAN YOU DRAW A STRAIGHT LINE OR A CROOKED BIND BETWEEN YOUR AUGUST 2015 E-MAIL TO YOUR REPUBLICAN FRIEND OF MULLER REPORT?

IT'S MY LIFE SO FOR ME, THE ORIGINAL STATELINE IS HANDLING. BUT I THINK IN GENERAL, THIS IS THE CULMINATION THAT I HAVE BEEN WORRIED ABOUT AND INTERESTED IN FOR VERY LONG TIME IN TERMS OF THE INCREASING DESTABILIZATION OF THE LEFT BY THIS WAVE OF CRIMINALITY COMING OUT OF THE EAST. THE FACT THAT IT HAS SEEPED INTO OUR POLITICS, INFECTED OUR POLITICS
Compare that interview to the National Review's version: The Damning Inspector General’s Report

Tessa Majors murder case

Tessa Majors was an 18-year-old freshman at Barnard College, a private college for women in Manhattan, New York City. She was stabbed to death in an apparent mugging. A 13-year-old boy is in custody suspected of the murder. A second 14-year-old boy was detained by police but released and a third is being sought by police. The shocking thing to me is how young the suspects are (all three aged 13 to 14). Police say the 13-year-old has confessed.

Here is one story of many:

In one sense they join up because there is not much happening economically in Samoa. But when asked they will point to WW II where the US promised that if there was a base there the Japanese would never be able to take the islands. They all know about it and it plays a role in their local culture.

And then of course there are the Northren Marianas which we pretty much acquired as booty in World war 2.
The Southern Marianas...Guam for all practical purposes..has the same status as Puerto Rico ;it was acquired from Spain at the same time as we got Puerto Rico.
Odd thing is Spain then put the Northren Marianas on the market after the Spanish American War and it decided to liquitdate it's overseas remnants and offered them to the US;US refused and Germany bought them. and then Germany lost then to Japan in World War One which lead to Guam being basically indefensible and it, and the Northerm Marianas, had to be taken at great cost in World War 2;Saipan was one of the most brutal of the Island campaings in World War 2. It might have been different if we had bought the Nortren Marianias when we got the chance.

Bloomberg for President?

There doesn't seem to be a Bloomberg thread, so here's one.

A Bloomberg campaign manager made an interesting point in a TV interview: As far back as the '70s, Iowa and New Hampshire have played a primary role in deciding who can run for President. If somebody can't do well in those small, very atypical states, he loses the support and money he needs to go on. But Bloomberg plans to run a national campaign: He will buy ads and assemble staff in every state. He doesn't need Iowa to permit him to run in California and Florida.

I'm not sure Bloomberg should be President, or even that he's the best nominee the Dems can find, but he's certainly in a position to make his own rules, and he has a more of a record of concrete accomplishment than most of the legislators in the race.

On November 18 Geonet/GNS upgraded the risk from 1 to 2. This was on radio New Zealand. At that time, and on that bulletin, they advised no one should set foot on the island.
They can only advise, not instruct, so IWI ignored this. They purchased the business 2 years ago, and a multi million dollar boat. Iwi will never take advice from the colonisers, and it is obvious that 3 weeks may have passed with nothing happening, but something happened, tragically during that brief day cycle. Like stadiums, White Island is almost always empty.

The European Green Deal

The European Green Deal.

The Guardian (highlights in brief).

Quote:

Nearly every major aspect of the European economy is to be re-evaluated in light of the imperatives of the climate and ecological emergency, according to sweeping new plans set out by the European commission on Wednesday.
The comprehensive nature of the European Green Deal – which encompasses the air we breathe to how food is grown, from how we travel to the buildings we inhabit – was set out in a flurry of documents as Ursula von der Leyen, the new commission president, made her appeal to member states and parliamentarians in Brussels to back the proposals, which would represent the biggest overhaul of policy since the foundation of the modern EU.

14-year-old Florida boy beaten for supporting Trump

Maybe it was for some other reason.

Shocking moment school bus bullies pummel 14-year-old boy leaving him hospitalized with head injuries 'because he'd worn a Trump 2020 hat'

The incident left the boy, identified only as Tyler, hospitalized with head contusions, according to his mother, a Trump supporter who tweets under the handle @AmericanDiaries.

The attorney, Walker, verified in a tweet that the incident occurred on a school bus in Hamilton County, and that he was representing the family...

The boy's mother explained on Twitter that she believed the attackers were motivated by a Trump 2020 campaign hat that her son had previously worn to school.

She said that the boy stopped wearing the hat due to harassment, but that the bullying continued...

Video of the attack shows at least three females and two males raining blows down on Tyler's head as he tries to protect himself from the attack.

Tyler's mother says she believes the assault was racially motivated. Tyler is white, and the assailants appear to be black...
