Urban not-so-legend: razor blades found in gas pump handle

I was surprised to find out this actually happened earlier this week at a gas station in Michigan. It's one of those kinds of stories that tends to make the chain-email rounds.

Quote:

Coloma Township Police say a woman first noticed a razor blade Monday night. The woman wasn't hurt, but police found more razor blades Tuesday.

Chief Wes Smigielski went to the Speedway on Ryno Street. That's where the manager told him they found a second blade in the same handle and six more on top of the pump.

He's now reviewing video to see when and who may have put them there.

The last thing people think they'd encounter is a razor blade when reaching for the pump handle.

Two were lodged in the plastic covering, but Chief Smigielski says there were six more.

“They may have been there trying to do more, but then maybe someone may have saw them and they ran off. I’m not sure what happened,” said Smigielski.

Looking at how rusted one is, Smiegielski says it could have been there for a few months. He says he's heard of this before but has never seen it in Coloma.

“It’s kind of shocking and unsettling to say the least that someone would actually put that there or try to do that intentionally,” said Smigielski.
Not sure about the time period; I think razor blades tend to rust very quickly when left out in the rain, so I don't think it's necessarily been months since the assailant left them. But I suppose that ultimately matters little.
