New human “organ” discovered

Saw this being covered in a few places over the last week or so.

...snip...

Our body contains a pair of previously overlooked and clinically relevant nasopharyngeal salivary glands, according to new research led by the Netherlands Cancer Institute and the University of Amsterdam

...snip...
I think it’s quite amazing that we can still identify very significant whole glands/organs despite how much we have researched and studied human anatomy for hundreds of years.

It’s even more astonishing in this case when you consider that doctors have known something can happen to patients’ ability to produce saliva after radiation treatment even though they attempt to avoid all the known glands and the glands still produce saliva. Happened to my mother and the explanation given was “we don’t know why this happens in some patients, it’s one of those things”. The reason why they didn’t look for these glands or consider some other glands might be being damaged by radiation was because they’d been taught the locations of “all” the salivary glands in the head.

(You may have seen this reported as a new organ in the mainstream press, before you have a go at the mainstream press, “new organ” is how the lead researcher refers to it in interviews.)
