Matter can't go faster than light?

Why can't matter move faster than light?

If I build a spaceship with an engine that slowly keeps accelerating the vehicle, it will eventually reach 300,000 meters per second, which is the speed of light.

Mind you, speed is all relative. From our perspective the Moon is barely moving, but from the perspective of some other planet in our galaxy, the moon is moving extremely fast!

So who's to say my spaceship can't reach 300,000 meters per second and then further acceleration is impossible?
