3 girls suspended from school after posting "there's a rapist" notes

In a high school in Maine, three girls taped notes on the wall in a few of the girls' restrooms which read, "There's a rapist in our school and you know who it is." The one of the girls who has publicly come forward has said the notes were in response to a generalized problem of unaddressed sexual misconduct at the school, and the notes did not name any victims or alleged perpetrators. Nevertheless, a male student at the school who learned about the notes decided for some reason that they were about him specifically and complained to administrators, and the three girls who posted the notes have been suspended for "bullying".

The suspensions prompted some students to stage a walkout earlier this month, and the ACLU is suing the district on behalf of the one girl who has come forward publicly.

I expect the outcome of this situation will be an overturning of at least the one suspension; and to me it is almost comical that the male student essentially volunteered himself as the subject of an allegation that initially had no name whatsoever attached to it.
