Why we can't have a popular vote

Over in the "Send her back" thread, some folks started a bit of a derail about proportional representation, the senate and the EC.

Thought I'd start a new thread to house that line of discussion.

One point that was made by a few posters was that the current system allowed rural voters who would otherwise be drowned out by city residents to have a voice.

I can agree that rural voters may have distinct interests, and that being a minority, their interests may not be well served by a system totally based of population proportional representation.

But why is this one minority interest group more important than other minority interest groups? Rural Americans is not the only group of people with particular interests who comprise a minority of the population. Why, in 2020 and going forward, does that minority deserve more of a voice in government than any other minority interest group?

I mean, if you say that rural voters will just get trampled by a government elected by the majority, what about black voters? Voters making minimum wage? Non-Christian voters? What makes rural interests uniquely deserving of representation beyond their proportion of the population?
