Christianities

I find it of interest that so many versions of Christianity exist, and curious to know the essential and fundamental differences - if they exist. As I have mentioned before, I recently read "A History of Christianity" by Diarmaid MacCulloch. I found this to be a most impressive and enlightening work, giving a penetrating insight into how Christianity developed over time, with its many schisms and bloody confrontations, between rival groups.

The modern splintering of Christianity seems massive by comparison to the older parting of groups. Exactly what divides them is hard to put your finger on however. Exactly what defines each particular version likewise.

I recently watched some Pentecostal services on YouTube. A couple of Hillsong ones and a couple of others. The Hillsong services were very glitzy compared to the others*, but they shared a common them. All about receiving Jesus, or the spirit, into your heart. Lots of hands in the air and swaying about.

Not much scripture quoted by the preacher in between the singing and chanting, so it was difficult to get a handle on what they believed, and what parts of the Bible they hung their beliefs on. I wonder if there is much there at all.

Would be interesting if we could get representatives of different versions of Christianity to spell out just what they believe, and see how they compare to each other. Active believers are somewhat thin on the ground in this forum, but we do have quite a lot of ex believers.

*Dead boring.
