China has its first cases of Angiostrongylus cantonensis being transmitted through the consumption of live centipedes.
It's on CNN, so (as obvious with the headline) is looking for the "OMG! Eeew!" audience, but the article is interesting from a scientific point of view.
I'm personally interested because one of the members of our household probably consumes the occasional live centipede - Sneaky, our cat. And at very irregular moments, sometimes weeks apart/sometimes months, she will get violently ill. It'll start with a plaintive meowwwwlllllll and then she actually walks a few steps and will fall over, right herself and then begrudingly expel no food/solids, but bile. It's very similar, if you've ever had the experience, to what you expel when you've had food poisoning.
I can't find anything on felines being affected by this particular parasite, just general comments on the various parasites in snails and slugs (who knew there was such an assortment?) that effect carnivores and other hunters. They get them from the secondary or tertiary hosts like rodents, reptiles and birds who consume the snail/slug.
I've decided to declare war on centipedes. We don't get the great huge monster red ones from the jungles in our area but I've killed a number of them at > 7 cm. Their sting isn't deadly but they can be damned painful (akin to a wasp/hornet sting). You have no chance of trapping and releasing them because they are so fast that by the time you get up to get your whatever-contraption to trap 'em, they've disappeared. I watched one escape through the tiniest of cracks between some wall tiles - they can get through deceptively small spaces, but mostly I don't want one biting my son (not to mention the cat, the wife, the self).
