Probably hopeless given the intense emotions around gun ownership, but I would like this thread to be a place for suggestions, perhaps primarily by those who collect guns as hobbies: what do you think would be the best laws to permit your interests in guns as hobbies to be accommodated with minimal interference, yet minimize the use of guns in violent crime? Is such a thing even possible?
It strikes me that there might be hope for a productive discussion focused on this one issue. The types of guns desired by most collectors are not those typically used in street crime. I suspect most collectors are very knowledgeable and very careful to avoid unauthorized access of others to their collections. They undoubtably use them in very safe ways in appropriate environments. Unlike the issues of gun use for self-protection or defense against an "evil" government, the issue of how to craft laws that limit "bad gun use" but happily allow guns as pure hobbies might be most responsive to productive discussion.
