The Global Decline of Democracy

The Democracy as an Institution is in decline.

From the top of my head.

Singapore
USA
Malaysia
Cambodia
Poland
Italy
UK
Australia
Thailand
Indonesia
PNG
Israel
Brazil
Argentina
Mexico
South Africa

Many others if I could spend the time to look them all up. Many African countries, for example. Other South American countries.

Several fail the simplest test. Do governments ever get voted out?

People seem to react to a failing Democracy with a resort to the outsider strongman who claims to be able to fix everything very simply. This usually means blaming a group of outsiders. If only they were gone, everything would be good again.

By the time it gets to this stage it is getting uncomfortably close to a point of no return to a real democracy. Already the seeds of decay have been sown by
  • Divisive wedge politics that frighten people and make them believe they are in a real dilemma when it is really a false dilemma.
  • Corruption
  • Massive wealth inequality
  • Instability
  • Lack of respect for Democracy by the very people are employed to carry it out.
