The effects of looking back in time

A question occurs to me about the effects of looking through telescopes at objects that are billions of light-years away. In such a case we would be looking at a universe that is much smaller than today's universe. Apparently, however, we would be looking at a larger sphere, even though we know that the universe is expanding. Wouldn't this cause some sort of funhouse-mirror-like distortion? I.e., what is apparently larger is actually much smaller. Do astronomers take this distortion into account?
