I've been spending more time commuting and also on long flights. I usually spend the time listening to podcasts, as I like the format for some reason or other.
Here are some of the podcasts I enjoy:
Making Sense by Sam Harris:Most of you are probably familiar with this one. IMO, they are of varied quality, but the best ones can be really, really good. It often depends on the guest Sam has on the show. Sometimes strays into TDS.
The Glenn Show:Glenn Loury podcast. IMO one of the great thinkers of our age. He always attempts to give the other side of any position he takes a fair hearing and really tries to change his own mind. Loury is an economist , but the topic is usually current events, often with an emphasis on issues of race. Loury's own opinions tend towards the conservative side, but not always true of his guests.
The Armstrong and Getty Show:This one is actually an AM radio show, so it's a bit unusual for a podcast format. They speak from a conservative/libertarian perspective with which I usually tend to agree. They sometimes disagree with each other on the air. It is also quite funny at times and covers other current events and social issues, not just politics. They have a long radio intro on the podcast every day, so I usually just skip to hour two.
The Dave Ramsey Show:This one is more or less a guilty pleasure for me. Hearing the guests call in with their financial scenarios offers a glimpse into all these different personal situations around the country. I find this entertaining and interesting and usually agree with Dave's advice.
I also listen to a bunch of Japanese podcasts, and every once in a while check on Joe Rogan, This American Life and RadioLab but usually only find them so so.
Any suggestion for good podcasts? I'd love to add another scientific/philosophical one like Sam Harris. I'd also like a mildly political podcast where the host(s) have views that challenge my own as a conservative. I've tried a few, but they were mostly unhinged, super far left SJW-ish rants. I know there have to be others out there, but it is tough to separate the wheat from the chaff.
