The new-branding of the Thaksin party (formerly Pheu Thai), the Thai Raksa Chart party has just named the current King's sister (daughter of our "sainted" deceased king) as their candidate for PM.
This makes things marvelously complicated. First of all, the big support for the military junta (aside from the self-serving officer corps) is Royalists - the famed "yellow shirts" who with the military's help brought down Shinawatra II in 2014.
Alas, the general has made himself a problem. His NCPO (National Council for Peace and Order) has strengthened Lese Majeste laws and has jailed numerous people for criticism of royalty, now he has to run against a member of royalty! All he can do is blow his own horn. If he says one word against the other candidate there will be cops ready willing and able to arrest him. Seriously. The police are a branch of the military and are Thaksin supporters.
When the momentary humor wears off, this is a very dangerous situation.
