A 55 Kilometer (35 mile) bridge between the Chinese mainland at Macau and the island of Hong Kong has officially opened after numerous delays.
Due to the... weird border situation between Hong Kong and mainland China privately owned vehicles will not be allowed to use the bridge to travel between the island the mainland however. Buses and specially designated rental cars will be able to use the bridge after their passengers clear customs.
The bridge uses 4 times the materials used in the Golden Gate Bridge, cost an estimated 20 billion American dollars, has a 6.7 kilometer (4 mile) tunnel section to prevent impeding sealane traffic, and was designed to be both earthquake and typhoon resistant.
