Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. |
What it does: It prohibits the Federal Government, and by extension, lesser government, from limiting freedom of speech, press, and assembly. Like all of the Constitution, it is subject to interpretation by the Supreme Court, which, for example, extended it to corporate campaign financing in Citizens United.
What it does not do: It does NOT say anything about criticism of any speech by anyone outside the government. For example, Donald Trump, and at least one poster here, is saying that his First Amendment rights are being violated by protesters at his rallies. He's wrong. They're just exercising their own First Amendment rights. Trump is, of course, within his rights to have them removed from his private event, but as long as the government isn't involved his rights aren't being violated.
