Several months ago Mrs. Rock took a job at the Indian Health Service hospital in Pine Ridge, SD. The Pine Ridge reservation is the home of the Lakota. This tribe is famous for being the last to stop fighting with the US, the victims of the Massacre at Wounded Knee, and the tribe portrayed in Dances With Wolves.
They really were treated horribly and after the majority of their reservation was stolen they refused to sign any additional treaties. They have no federal assistance beyond the basic food supplies and medical treatment.
While they were screwed many years ago their current problems are of their own making. The tribal council is run by conspiracy theorists who have said in council meetings that the fact that the CIA killed JFK shows that the government can't be trusted. They have discussed how the FBI and CIA have spies on the reservation and alcohol sales specifically target the reservation to keep them weak and kill them off.
Businesses have been denied permission to build on the reservation for stupid reasons like the recycling company who went elsewhere after the council wanted all of the company's profits. A proposed horse slaughter house wasn't built because the council said horses were sacred to them in spite of the fact that the ancient Lakota ate horses and there is already a bison slaughter house on the reservation.
But, all of this silliness pales in comparison to what happened today. The council called an emergency session and voted to declare war on the US. I'm not joking. I am 100% serious. In response to the building of a new oil pipeline across the reservation the council voted for war. They are writing a letter which is going to be hand-delivered to Obama next week.
I don't know what's going to come of this, but considering the council's track record I'm leaning towards "absolutely nothing".
