That is part of a strange urban legend that a certain relative of mine believes. A relative whom I will call J.
She believes that she must cut out the address labels of newspapers and magazines and mailings, and then shred them, to keep crooks from doing Bad Things to her. She refuses to use a Magic Marker on them, because she believes that crooks can see through them.
There are serious problems. Who'd want to dumpster-dive in a lower-middle-class small town? How exploitable are address labels for identity theft? Is it at all possible to see through Magic-Marker marks? At least not without some VERY fancy equipment, the sort that's been used on ancient and medieval documents to search for writing on them.
