I thought some of the history buffs could help me out here.
A few years ago, I remember watching a historical drama about the Normandy Landings. (I believe it was Ike: Countdown to D-Day, but I'm not 100% sure.) In one scene, the allied generals are busy making plans, when they bring in Charles de Gaulle to tell him what the plans are (and to hopefully get him to agree and assist them). De Gaulle seems to criticize the plan.
Now, a few things:
- I know movies are not necessarily "reenactments", and that liberties are often taken with historical accuracy
- I know that de Gaulle had a reputation for being a bit of a prima-donna (rightly or wrongly), and was seen as demanding more respect than his position deserved
- I also know that members of the Free French army participated in the invasion
My questions:
- Can anyone confirm whether this was indeed the movie I had seen? (or if the movie has that particular scene in it)
- Did that particular event actually happen (i.e. did De Gaulle disagree with the Normandy invasion plans)
- If de Gaulle did disagree with the plans, how did the Free French forces get involved? (Did de Gaulle change his mind, or were the troops that got involved not directly under his command)
