Help me answer math questions (NOT homework)

I'm an editor/writer turned English teacher turned math teacher, hoping forum members can answer my math questions (not do my math problems). My first question involves Pythagoras, his friends and the concept of irrational numbers. Legend has it some guy was thrown overboard for suggesting that some numbers could not be expressed as ratios of integers.

Would this guy have had the tools to do calculations - i.e., a manipulable system of numbers that would allow him to produce vanishingly small decimal values - or would this have been a philosophical proposition?

Related question - how did Romans do math with Roman numerals?
