FBI Investigates "Gladiator School" Private Prison

The FBI has launched an investigation of the Corrections Corporation of America over the company's running of an Idaho prison with a reputation so violent that inmates dubbed it "Gladiator School."

The Nashville, Tenn.-based CCA has operated Idaho's largest prison for more than a decade, but last year, CCA officials acknowledged it had understaffed the Idaho Correctional Center by thousands of hours in violation of the state contract. CCA also said employees falsified reports to cover up the vacancies. The announcement came after an Associated Press investigation showed CCA sometimes listed guards as working 48 hours straight to meet minimum staffing requirements.

In the Land of the Free, we have 5% of the world's general population and 25% of the prison population. We have more prisoners per capita than any society in history- including the USSR at the height of the Gulag system and the Third Reich.

Private prison contracts often include quotas from 80%-100% occupancy- in other words guaranteeing profits by imposing a "low crime" tax. Apparently this is not enough for the CCA, which has decided to cut costs by turning over their prisons to be run by gangs. Perhaps some of the CCA executives should see some correctional time from the inside of their facilities, although somehow I doubt it will ever happen.

It's my view that private prisons are antithetical to the values of a free society. When you make incarceration profitable, you get more of it.
