I'm a very confused agnostic. Sorry if I my post is a bit of a mish mash and muddled. I have learning difficulties and it's all a bit of a mish mash and muddled in my head. I apologise if some of my questions are stupid.
I don't know where to start really. I've been looking in to Christianity and it still doesn't make sense to me and there are things about it I didn't like. Which is one of the reasons that I stopped being a Christian years ago.
People have explained sin to me and I think I understand it although it still doesn't sound very nice. Before I couldn't understand why we were all condemned to Hell just because of something a third party did (Adam and Eve). I spoke to someone on the forum who said: Well, the Christian answer would be something like this. Think of someone born with a mental defect that makes them a psychopath...they kill other people, but they can't help themselves, even if they also try to do a lot of good things. It's not their fault, they were born that way...but we still have to punish them. To Christians, sin is the same thing...we're all sinners, we all deserve the punishment of hell. It doesn't matter that it's not our fault. To me the punishment of burning in Hell for eternity for something that's not your fault seems very extreme and cruel. Especially for people who don't believe and have basic morals and aren't psychopaths. Also this was all part of God's plan so he knew about this. But then a friend wrote this about God's plan: Firstly, I think it is important to be clear that saying God has a plan isn't quite the same as saying God has written the script for creation and intends everything to happen precisely the way it does. When he created beings with free will, God willingly delegated something of his sovereignty, and although he still guides the events of history, he does so in a way that takes account of free will and does not over-ride it. So it would never be Gods will for someone to turn to evil but, when God knows that someone will act in an evil way, his plan can take account of that and cause at least some good consequences to follow on.
A friend of mine wrote this: Adam was not only blessed with God's gifts but was able to be completely comfortable in the presence of God. If you compare how Adam related to God with the way that God would not let Moses see his face as he passed, or the way Isaiah was overcome with fear on seeing the Lord, or the way the apostles were overawed at the transfiguration, you will see what I mean.
The thing that causes us to remain apart from God is our own sin. God knows that, if we were to perceive him fully and directly, our own sense of shame and unworthiness in his presence would be unbearable (that is why Rev 21:27 says that nothing impure can enter heaven). So God holds back, revealing himself slowly, giving us time and grace to put all sin aside.
So I guess this is why we don't see God? Not seeing any evidence makes it hard to believe in him. Although I guess he could reveal him self partly to us like he did to Moses, Isaiah and the apostles? And I guess this is why we can't go to heaven and end up in that other place Hell. But again Hell seems very extreme and cruel place to send a none believer too. Especially one that has basic morals.
I read that God created people with free will because he didn't want robots that followed him because they had to, he wanted people to follow him because they chose too. I guess that's understandable. I wouldn't want to have friends who were friends with because they has no choice. I'd want genuine friends who were friends with me because they want to be. But even the humans that do follow him aren't good enough because of this sin thing.
If God creates someone with free will is it their fault or his fault when they do something bad?
Why does God have such high standards for his creations?
When God designed the human body he didn't design it to die or have disease so after we sinned our bodies were living in a world they weren't designed for. Does that explain why our bodies have so many faults such as not being able to produce it's own vitamin C, body odour, testicles, plaque etc? I don't know if what I've just written even makes sense there.
If God is an all powerful omnipotent being why can he not forgive our sins himself? Why did he have to send Jesus?
Also it isn't God that created disease and natural disasters it's man's sin. How did committing a sin effect the earth's environment and create disease? I don't get it.
When God created Adam and Eve he knew they were going to sin. It was part of his plan. I don't get God plan. God creates the heavens and angels but one of his angels Lucifer rebels against God but because God is omnipotent and sees the past and the future etc, he already new that, that was going to happen. It was part of his plan.
Also I read that God created Hell and God alone has the power to cast you in to Hell and Jesus holds the keys. Why would a God that loves his creations send them to such an awful place. How is that justice? And he cast you in to Hell just because you didn't believe. To me that doesn't sound like a very nice God.
To me God's plan sounds like he needed us to go though life on earth in order to test us and select the humans that worship him, believe him and are good people.
I'm sorry this is such a jumble. I really can't get my head round it. As I say there are things about Christianity that I don't understand, I don't like, doesn't make sense, there's lack of evidence, there's flaws in the bible, the bible has probably been edited over the years and there's science which makes me not believe in it. But at the same time part of me is actually quite scared than I'm going to go to this horrible place called Hell because I am confused and unsure due to all these things. How is that fair?
What made you not believe in the Christian God? or any God for that matter?
