I grant you that the US has indeed done some good with its ridiculously massive military spending. "Saving the world" is a bit much. I don't think anyone except perhaps for the Soviets would ever have actually used nukes post-WW2. And the Soviets, if they used nukes, would have used them against America. But that's just my opinion and quite beside the point.

And since you brought up nukes, it was the arms war between the US and the USSR that built up the world's nuclear arsenal to the point where it was sufficient to kill every person in the world not two times, not twenty times, but two hundred times over.

Please tell me what on this sweet green earth is the point of a nuclear arsenal that big?

The purpose is to be able to survive a first strike and retaliate. As long as we can do that, we won't get attacked.
