6th Mass Extinction

The New Smithsonian Channel is airing a documentary tonight

called: "Mass Extinction: Life at the Brink"

Quote:

It's death on an unimaginable scale, when a majority of Earth's species quickly die out. It's called "mass extinction," and it's happened at least five times before. Cataclysms, such as supervolcanoes or asteroids, are thought to cause these events, but some experts believe a manmade mass extinction could be next. Is our planet in trouble? And if so, is there anything we can do to stop the next catastrophic annihilation? Experts are traveling the world, performing groundbreaking scientific detective work to answer these very questions.

My question is should we be doing more to not just deal with our own immediate needs to adapt to the changes we are wreaking upon the natural environment, but also to help the natural world adapt and survive the changes which we are forcing?

There are a number of measures we could take such as nature corridors which are protected wildlife stretches connecting national and state forests and preserves facilitating the migration and transit of plant and animal species without isolating wildlife into increasingly shrinking "islands" surrounded by agricultural and human habitation zones.

So I guess there are two things that are the primary focus of this thread (1) Should we be doing more to address the extinction event we seem to be a major factor in causing, and (2) what type of measures should we be looking at to help the natural world adjust and adapt to the changes we are forcing upon the natural world?

BTW - I believe you can watch the entire first episode at the above link, but here is a short little 35 sec. preview - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MrI2E...ZaDp-PVbqEch9g
