I don't know if this is a problem for anyone else, but I find my mouse mats become unusable for me in a relatively short period of time.
I use a laser mouse, and really need precision tracking with the various applications I use; and once the mat gets contaminated with dust or whatever, it doesn't seem to respond to my attempts at cleaning.
The solution I have come up with is black card stock. It tracks very well, and if it gets corrupted I toss it and replace with another sheet. 50 Pack from Walmart for ~$3...
I have also put a larger piece of black poster board on a part of my desk to use as an extended mousing surface as I move around, using my extended desktop.
