Disk of a Galaxy

Which is it? Can someone please explain? A sentence says "The cloud will pass through the disk of the Milky Way. I looked up "disk" to see exactly where that is and seem to have ended up with two different answers.

1) The disk is a plane through the center of the galaxy where most of the stars are. In other words a horizontal plane much as you would get if you held a knife on the side of a cake (instead of at the top) and sliced through it. That slice would be at the disk.

2) I may be mis-reading on this one but it seems to be saying the disk in the the arms of the apirals that circle the bulge.

Please? Thanks.
