Matthew Shepherd- Homophobia or Drug Crime?

I've heard of the Matthew Shepherd case for years, but stumbled across this article from ABC that makes the claim the murder was drug fueled, not fueled by homophobia. Even claiming that one of his murderers was a sometimes partner of Shepherd.
