I have an intense craving for onions right now. I can't explain it because I don't normally like onions. My wife, a doctor, says that it must be because my body needs something in onions. I'm skeptical. How would my body know that the needed substance could be found in onions? Her reasoning is based on the condition known as pica; where people crave ice, dirt or clay. Pica is a sign of iron deficiency.
My Google-fu about onion cravings only turned up dubious claims regarding sluggish livers. I also saw some more credible information that cravings are mostly psychological in nature. But I can't imagine what psychological phenomenon would result in this intense craving I have for onions.
So what does the collected wisdom of this forum have to say on the matter?
