When did the s/w get to decide what you really meant to type?

Over in 'forum member support' I posted about how something (the forum software, Firefox, IE, html itself?) decides that when I type <space><space><space> then what it will display is <space>, as if I made a terrible mistake with too many spaces and it needs to correct that.

I didn't, actually, and thank you very much Mr Software. What I meant was exactly what I typed .... space space space.

Decades ago I wrote computer program code where you had to choose to build in functions to strip spare spaces and tabs - the original text was the friggin' default unless told otherwise.

Is there an overwhelmingly good reason for this default stripping? Maybe there is ....
