Modern English words based on/rooted in obsolete English words?

...such as the word "ruthless". I think that most people know that it means

"without compassion", and that few of us know that its root word - "ruth" - is

an obsolete word meaning "compassion".

Makes sense, but I find it interesting that the root word fell into relative

disuse, while the word that is rooted in it is still in common usage today.

I figure that there are other examples of this type of situation, but none occur

to me.

Can any of you think of any?
