Is it safe to get Gmail reserve codes?

I have Gmail two-step verification. I have however not printed any reserve codes which Gmails offers (and encourages) me to do, so if I lose my phone I'm locked out. I therefore thought it would be a good idea to get some reserve codes.



However, how does it work? Is the process safe, or could a trojan or other malware potentially pick up the reserve codes?
