Bad day to be a dairy animal in Idaho

The Idaho state senate has passed a law that will ban unauthorized video or audio recording on farms and dairies. Why you ask? The bill is being presented almost two years after animal rights activists released footage of abuse at Dry Creek Dairy southwest of Murtaugh, owned by large-scale dairy owner Luis Bettencourt.

"The bill is needed because it protects farmers and dairies from animal rights activists who terrorize the agricultural industry", said state Sen. Jim Patrick, R-Twin Falls, who is also the bill’s sponsor.

Another brilliant quote from the esteemed senator. “We’re trying to go through the proper due process,” Patrick said. “A video is unnecessary. If you go back to the examples earlier in the centuries’ problems, they didn’t use videos. It’s exposed without it. So, I believe video is unnecessary.”

The proposed legislation would create a new crime of interfering with agricultural production, primarily targeting anyone who records audio or video on the facility and then distributes it without the owner’s permission. The new crime would result in penalties as high as a year in jail and a possible $5,000 fine.
