Were you there? (Creationist argument against evolution)

A pretty good response from a Biology teacher:

He Was There In Spirit

Quote:

Biology Teacher: “Now, as you should have read in the text, the most recent common ancestor between humans and chimpanzees most likely lived between 6-8 million years ago, although there is some—”

Classmate: *jumps to his feet* “Were you there?!”

Biology Teacher: “Excuse me?”

Classmate: “Were you there when monkeys turned into people?!”

. . .

You might recognize the question as one Kent Hovind and Ken Ham encourage young creationists to ask their Biology teachers.

Of course, it's a pretty silly argument. We know lots of things that we weren't there to personally witness. And it seems so trivially easy to turn it around and ask the Creationist why he's so certain that all of the stuff in the Bible is true. I mean, were you there? The objection is that the Creationist might just say, so therefore science is just another Religion. Plus a Biology teacher can't get into a theological debate with a student or question his religious beliefs. Given the constraints of the situation, I think it's an excellent answer.
