Apparently I have been incorrect in my assumption that the falling ball on stick video demonstration illustrates a faster than free fall situation.
I am also not wrong.
This page explains why.
At some angles the end of the stick does accelerate faster than 'g'. Bascically those angles less than about 35 degrees.
