Big news today in Washington is that Obama is no longer going to propose changing the cost of living formula for Social Security ("chained CPI") in his budget. This was particularly irksome for liberals, since cutting SS is never popular with voters and Republicans would only attack Obama and Dems for doing it.

I heard it said on cable news tonight, and I agree, that Obama has decided to avoid the mistakes of 2010, when he was holding out for a compromise bipartisan budget Republicans were never going to accept anyway. This had the effect of tamping down Dem base support at a time when Republican base was on fire with enthusiasm, leading to the massive sweep at all levels in that election. This time Obama is going to toe the line and try to get Democrats and liberals jazzed about coming out to vote this November. He's telling the Third Way types and the Simpson-Bowles enthusiasts that he's had enough, and he's going with his base.
He has to do this. If the Senate flips this fall, then his presidency will be severely hobbled.
