Press accounts say Justice Scalia died peacefully in his sleep. What does that really mean? Sleep has to be less stressful than anything else anybody could do, even walking, even sitting. What would cause an apparently healthy person to die in his sleep? Heart attack, stroke, breathing problems? Would the person have known he was in trouble, but be unable to ask for help? Or does he just pass from dreams into oblivion? If someone else had been in the room, would they have observed distress? There are countless causes of death, but I don't understand how sleep can be one of them.
