So they take your passport..

It's not uncommon for a court to require a defendant to turn over his passport as a condition of granting bail (both Bill Cosby and Tonya Couch did so recently). What happens then? Does the court send the passport to the State Department, or report that it's being held? Do the border authorities get alerted? What prevents the defendant from reporting the passport stolen and getting a replacement? For that matter, with a little planning a defendant could falsely claim he lost it, get a replacement, and turn the original over to the court while he heads for the border with the new one. Seizing the passport doesn't count for much unless the State Department gets notified. And that's only for U.S. citizen defendants. If someone is here on a foreign passport, it might be even easier to get a replacement under the radar from his embassy or consulate. So what does the court do when it takes a passport?
