My understanding of averages is somewhat tenuous at best, but this definitely has me stumped. From an abstract in the Journal of Clinical Oncology here:
"Results: Median OS [overall survival] after development of brain metastases was 49.5 months (95% CI, 29.0 months to not reached)..."
What do they mean, "not reached"? In plain English, does this mean...
The first person died at 29 months and the rest are either still alive or died at scattered times after that...
Or most people died around 29 months or before but some are still alive...
Or what actually happened and how do they know the median is 49.5 months if it wasn't reached?
