I sprung for a new Dell laptop for the wife for Xmas. Windows 8.1....
After reading through the "Windows 8" thread I was a little apprehensive. Actually, the OS was little problem. Hit the "desktop" tile and ignore all the other ones.
Easiest way to find anything is to use the search button... Entering "co" gets the control panel to pop up, entering "c" gets "computer".... You hardly have to type anything.
However.... Wife likes Firefox and I installed that. Also had to do the Java update so she could play her games on Pogo.
That's where the trouble started. I must have hit a spoof site for the Java because I almost instantly got one of those adware bugs. Took me an hour or so to get rid of that.
Then I went through the program list and found all manner of bloatware and intrusive ad-trackers and such....
Got rid of those.
Then... The machine announced it was downloading 64 updates from windows. That took a couple of hours...With several re-starts.
Finally got it up and running and had to jump through more hoops to get her Pogo games running due to the silly pop-up blocker exceptions and getting around those..
Took most of the day but finally running smoothly.
