When one reads polemics by "gay rights activists" one common statement that comes up is "consenting adults". This phrase, especially common among Americans, neglects a huge source of legal discrimination that gay and bisexual couples have been subject to namely when one or more of the people involved in same-sex relationships have not been an adult.
When homosexual intercourse was legalized in countries such as Sweden, Germany, Britain and others this happened in a piecemeal manner. When it became legal to have gay sex in general the legislators added new offenses that effectively put the "age of consent" for gay sex higher than for the heterosexual intercourse. For example, the "age of consent" was put at 18 in Sweden (the legislative committee had suggested 21) and not the age of 15, which was the comparable age limit for heterosexual intercourse.
The arguments for doing this was, among others, to "protect" the risk that they themselves would be made gay as opposed to developing a "healthy" and "normal" sexuality. The reasons for not extending the same "protection from gay sex" to teenage girls and was basically that lesbians were of little concern and could be ignored.
Over time such laws were generally repelled. In Sweden it took from 1944, when gay sex ceased to a crime, to 1978 when the "age-of-consent" for sex was equalized at 15 irrespective of the sex of the underage party or their partner. By contrast the equivalent dates in the UK were 1967 and 2001 (at which gay group sex was also legalized). Despite this there are many countries that have yet to formally repel said such laws, even in the EU. This doesn't mean that said laws are actually enforced, but it still effectively endorses discrimination (and can still potentially result in problems with law-enforcement even if they are never formally charged in court).
Thus one have to ask: why are so many "gay rights activists" unwilling rhetorically advocate against such laws even-though they were more or less completely grounded in homophobic bigotry? In a thread in the US politics section on this forum people made sure that "gay rights" only applied to adults. Pederasts, males who are sexually attracted towards adolescent males, are thus rightly excluded any protection from discriminatory laws as their "victims" would be "children" and not "adults".
