This has been bothering me for a long time, and I always get various answers from Google searches: Atmospheric refraction; “Dome Sky illusion”; and simple perspective. I don’t really believe any of them yet.
So, the question is why is can’t imaginarily bisect the lit portion of the moon and trace it directly in a straight line to the sun? It always seems to be way off. I’ve even tried to put a straightedge in my view of the bodies, and it still doesn’t line up.
What do the smart people here say?
