This has been bothering me for a long time, and I always get various answers from Google searches: Atmospheric refraction; Dome Sky illusion; and simple perspective. I dont really believe any of them yet.
So, the question is why is cant imaginarily bisect the lit portion of the moon and trace it directly in a straight line to the sun? It always seems to be way off. Ive even tried to put a straightedge in my view of the bodies, and it still doesnt line up.
What do the smart people here say?
