Prompted by a discussion elsewhere that begin with the question of whether there is a difference between "Allah Akbar" and "Allahu Akbar," a difference beyond it simply being a matter of transliterational taste. My anecdotal experience and limited research lead me to believe that the "u" is important, but I am open to correction.
In reference to Allah, I had thought it was a generic, like the Christian God, but this WikiIslam entry on "Allahu Akbar" says otherwise. This took me by surprise so I'm kind of at a loss on this.
Finally, in still another discussion a related point arose: I was told that during the time of Mohammed and for a while after, the Jewish, Christian, and Islamic names for God were identical, i.e., "Allah." I find this difficult to believe but thought I would ask.
