Today will be Bernie Sanders's big speech re-defining "democratic socialism".
Linky.
I really liked a joke on Reddit that he is a Marxist-Denmarkist.
But really, if this is anything like his previous definitions, he will be following the new American model of:
1. Any and every government program is socialist.
2. I support the current government programs and want more of them.
3. I am a socialist.
4. Denmark/Sweden is a socialist paradise.
It is like liberals, who previously internalised conservative hatred for the term "liberal" and became "progressive", are now internalising conservative rhetoric against any of their disliked government programs. In a hipster reappropriation, they are claiming the pejorative thrown at them. But it has nothing to do with actual socialism.
This is stupid, but I've seen people here defending it. So I dedicate this thread to whinging.
First, let me start off by banning the words "Europe" and "European" in this thread. Europe has many countries with many politics.
Now for terms:
Socialism- The means of production are owned by society as a whole. It can largely be defined by opposition to Capitalism. There are many varieties, going back before Marx, but they all want to replace the Capitalist system of economic relations.
Democratic Socialism- Essentially "Socialism, but not the USSR, we love democracy, guys".
Social Democracy- Welfare Capitalism. Social Democrats are the major parties in Denmark, Germany, etc. A number, like the UK's Labour party, claimed to be socialist in the past. This calls for government social programs, but not socialism. They exist with the Capitalist system.
Thus Bernie is a Social Democrat who likes Denmark, a Social Democracy.
Why does it matter? Well, aside from simple accuracy and the long and bloody history of Socialists vs Social Democrats, it is frustrating for actual socialists for the general populace to be "educated" into this bizarre world where even "socialism" is not an escape from the Capitalist system.
Quote:
Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont will be channeling Franklin D. Roosevelt more than Eugene V. Debs on Thursday afternoon as he delivers the most important speech of his bid for the Democratic presidential nomination: an attempt to demystify democratic socialism, his long-held political philosophy, and tie it to his vision of America. ... In explaining democratic socialism, which envisions democracies with socialist economic systems, Mr. Sanders plans to position himself as the political heir to one of the Democratic Party’s great heroes, F.D.R, according to Sanders aides who provided a preview of the speech. Mr. Sanders, building on his descriptions of the Roosevelt-backed Social Security program as a “socialist” endeavor, will call for the United States to adopt the so-called second Bill of Rights that Roosevelt proposed in his 1944 State of the Union address to Congress. |
