CVT transmissions: Are they really better?

I recently leased a new car. It felt awkward the moment I put my foot on the gas pedal. Within a week, the transmission(gearbox) was having some serious problems. The car wouldn't slow down properly whenever I took my foot off the gas pedal, the engine made funny noises, and the "check engine" dashboard light was always on. So I took it over to the dealership's service center. They realized the transmission had failed, and within 2 weeks they replaced the transmission free of charge since it was under warranty(I only had it a week!). They gave me a decent rental car during this 2 week period because they needed the parts to be shipped in from overseas. They told me a bit about the CVT(continuous variable transmission) transmission but I really didn't remember much of what they said. I nearly terminated my lease due to the 2 week wait, but at least the rental they gave me was free of charge.

Now I have my wheels back and it still feels very awkward. It slows properly and it drives okay, but the engine's RPM seems to accelerate strangely whenever I push the gas pedal and it makes a loud roar while doing so. The gas pedal also seems to vibrate funny. My previous car, an earlier model of the one I currently have didn't behave like this at all.

I decided to take a nice day trip with it anyway up in a hilly area to see how it would perform with the new CVT. It got scary at times how it would accelerate(not the car so much as the RPM, and I mean the RPM accelerates more than I expect it to). Frustrated, the next day I called the service center and they told me this was normal for the CVT, it's a new technology. I then deciced to read about this CVT technology and visited several sites and message boards concerning automobile problems and it sems many people have similar issues with the CVT. And in fact this "strangeness" is normal for the CVT, though based on my readings, CVTs also have a high failure rate, with many people having to replace their cars CVT after 6 months. Luckily, the CVT has a 10 year warranty; the CVT isn't unique to the car company I got mine from, since so many other companies produce cars with CVTs now.

So is the CVT actually better, and is it worth it? It seems it may be more fuel efficient, and weighs less than ordinary transmissions. But does it really have a high failure and replacement rate, and if so, why? Have you had any experience with CVTs? What are the drawbacks?

I can understand that new technologies may require getting used to, but this still feels odd to me. The CVT supposedly has an infinite number of positions it can be in, unlike older automatic transmissions which have a fixed number of positions. Is this true, and is this why it feels awkward to me and many other people?
