I just finished reading One Second After by William R. Forstchen.
The book is about life in a small North Carolina town after a nuclear EMP attack had disabled nearly all electronics in the USA.
While a work of fiction, the author describes in real technology and detail the effects of such an attack. There are a great many details that never crossed my mind should an event like this take place.
Anyway, I'm curious about how America would really react if an EMP attack happened. According to this book, about 99% of electronics not "hardened" from the pulse would completely fail. Electric grids would be useless as well, basically plunging the USA back into the 1800's.
Also, is an EMP likely? What do you think the chances are in our lifetimes?
I put this in SI&CE because I believe such an event qualifies as a realistic issue and one that affects social interaction worldwide.
